O2 UK blocking ICS updates for Xperia Arc, Ray and Neo

While Sony may have created some excitement in the last seven days with all their IFA announcements, for owners of some of the 2011 Xperia devices on O2 UK there is less cause for celebration. 

The British carrier has decided to block the update to Ice Cream Sandwich for three Xperia devices, the Arc, Ray and Neo. Despite Sony themselves having already released the updates for unlocked versions of all three devices, O2 claims that performance issues have caused them to block the update for their customers. 

They claim that Android 4.0 affected the devices' speed and performance, and since it didn't meet their requirements, O2 customers with one of these devices will remain on Gingerbread.

Unification Church founder Moon dies at 92

SEOUL (Reuters) - Sun Myung Moon, founder and head of the Unification Church with millions of followers around the world, died at a retreat near the South Korean capital Seoul on Monday, church officials said.

Moon was 92 and had suffered complications from pneumonia, said the officials.

He carried on an active public life until recently, officiating a mass wedding for 2,500 in March and leading a service of more than 15,000 followers in July.

Moon has handed over day-to-day operations of the church, which has its headquarters in Seoul, to one of his sons and the management of the Tongil Group with interests in construction, resorts, travel agencies and a newspaper to another son.

Supernatural 'Possession' leads box office

?Supernatural thriller "The Possession" ranked No. 1 on U.S. and Canadian box office charts on Sunday, dethroning two-time champ "Expendables 2" and setting up for a likely win over the long U.S. holiday weekend.

"Possession" pulled in $17.7 million in North American ticket sales from Friday through Sunday and was expected to reach $21.3 million on Monday, according to studio estimates compiled by Reuters. Crime drama "Lawless" finished in second place, and "Expendables 2" took the No. 3 slot.

Political documentary "2016: Obama's America," which dropped from seventh place last week to ninth pulled in $5.1 million over three days as it expanded across the country following a strong showing a week ago. The politically conservative critique of President Obama played in more than 1,700 theaters, up from about 1,100.

"Possession" is a horror film inspired by a newspaper account of a family that fights a demon known as a Dibbuk in ancient Yiddish folklore. The spirit resides in a Dibbuk box and is said to possesses people's bodies with the intention of devouring them.

In "Possession," the Dibbuk enters the body of a young woman, leaving her parents to figure out how to stop it. Kyra Sedgwick and Madison Davenport star in the film.

Another new film, "Lawless," nabbed $9.6 million at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters over the weekend. The movie stars Shia LaBeouf, Jason Clarke and Tom Hardy as bootlegging brothers in Prohibition-era Virginia.

Updated sales figures for the weekend's movies will come on Monday, when the United States and Canada mark the Labor Day (Labour Day) holiday. The weekend typically ranks as one the year's slowest as summer winds down and studios reserve their next big releases for holidays in November and December.

Through Sunday, action movie "Expendables 2" had dropped to the No. 3 spot after spending two weeks leading the North American charts. The movie stars Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and other 1980s tough guys as a group of spies sent on an easy mission that turns dangerous when they seek revenge for a murder.

It earned $8.8 million through Sunday and was expected to hit $11 million on Monday.

The No. 4 spot belonged to another action sequel, "The Bourne Legacy" starring Jeremy Renner as a spy who tries to escape pursuers from the CIA. The film earned $7.2 million through three days.

The weekend's other new movie, family film "Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure," sat in 28th place with domestic sales of $448,131.

Lions Gate Entertainment released "Possession" and "Expendables 2." Rocky Mountain Pictures distributed "2016," and privately-held Weinstein Co. distributed "Lawless." "Bourne Legacy" was released by Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp. Kenn Viselman Presents released "Ooogieloves."

Editorial: Recent legal decision in Apple v. Samsung limits - UWIRE

The Apple v. Samsung verdict was a big win for Apple, but it was a loss for consumers.

During the trial, Apple argued that Samsung had violated several of its patents, including those covering the iPhone?s design, rounded-square icons and ?pinch to zoom? technology.

In his closing arguments, Apple attorney Harold McElhinny pointed to documents he said showed Samsung?s panic after the iPhone came out, according to The Verge. McElhinny said Samsung officials met with Google officials, who said Samsung phones were too similar in design to Apple?s, but Samsung officials did not change the design.

Lawyers for Samsung disagreed and said design for Samsung phones predated the release of the iPhone.

Samsung attorney Charles Verhoeven said: ?Your (the judge?s) decision, if you go Apple?s way, could change the way competition worse in this country ? Rather than competing in the marketplace, Apple is seeking a competitive edge in the courtroom,? according to CNET.

The jury agreed with Apple and said Samsung violated six patents. Samsung said it would appeal and criticized the decision, saying it would decrease competition in the market and be worse for the average consumer.

According to Businessweek, Apple on Monday listed eight Samsung smartphones it wants banned in the United States: Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 AT&T, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh had already banned the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and said it violated a design patent.

The patents violated by Samsung, according to the jury from the case, ranged from software, to aesthetics, to outer shell design. Apple?s double-tap-to-zoom function when viewing documents worked similarly to Samsung models. Additionally, the ?bounce-back? feature that happens when users scroll beyond the edge of a page was mimicked. The third feature copied from Apple by Samsung, was the ability of Apple products to read multi-finger touches; previously devices could only read single-touch commands.

The icons on several Samsung phones, most notably the phone and clock buttons, were both similar in shape and design.

Apple had patented the overall shape of earlier generations of the iPhone, most notably the rounded back of the white iPhone. Lastly, the iPhone?s black colored, rounded-edged, square design had protection under Apple?s patents.

The consequences of this landmark verdict are numerous and many future innovations in the way of smart phones, not to mention consumer choices, are sure to be affected by this decision.

Though not the explicit point, the most immediate and literal translation of the trial will mean that smart phones and tablet computers will need to start looking different to avoid backlash from Apple. But thinking honestly and practically, how many ways can a phone look?

A rectangular phone with rounded edges is ergonomic and utilitarian. It fits into hands and slips into pockets. Any other shape would be senseless and any other edge seems to be going backward. True, as simple as the design protected may be, it is the property of Apple. But because Apple was able to win out as it did, consumers will probably see less product design crossover, meaning fewer cheaper models of products.

The other five patent violations, which are slightly more understandable, still point to a regression in smartphone technology.

Although we don?t understand several of the intricacies of patent law involved in the case, we do know it?s bad news for consumers. When Apple has a legal monopoly over intrinsic aspects of smartphone design and technology, consumers lose.
