Tyler Perry Vs. Spike Lee: A Debate Over Class And 'Coonery'

Jimi Izrael is the author of The Denzel Principle: Why Black Women Can't Find Good Black Men and a regular contributor to Tell Me More.

The battle between Spike Lee and Tyler Perry is less a battle about film than class and the popular black aesthetic.

Spike Lee imagines himself the keeper of a flame that, in many ways, he extinguished some years ago. During the 1990s, his films, while important, had become too preachy and pedantic to entertain, culminating in "Bamboozled," a remarkable film so heavy-handed it remains difficult to sit through. His films became his personal pulpit instead of stories well-told.

Perry's movies don't pretend to be high-art or heavily message-oriented. The irony may be that Perry and Lee tell basically the same stories, about the importance of spirituality, black pride and self-reliance. The key distinction is that Perry's films speak to a different audience than do Lee's, and less artfully so.

Perry's films have gained a reputation, fairly or not, as low-class. Lee's work is usually described as high-brow?somewhere, but not actually in theaters lately.

That said, this fact is clear: Tyler Perry does broker in coons and buffoonery. His stories rely heavily on popular caricatures of black people behaving badly.

But so what? Could we name a dramatic film that doesn't feature one negative ethnic, racial or social stereotype? Nope. Woody Allen's work is packed with yukels and yentas; Martin Scorcese's canon was built largely on plots about gangsters and gumbas, and John Hughes made a career of pitting 1980s' working-class whites against drug-addicted yuppie puppies and their dim parents.

Stereotypes feed drama, and drama makes good cinema. So, Perry's use of stereotypes is not a valid criticism.

The big knock against Perry is that he seems compelled to tell exactly the same stories over and over again, while a good number of blacks want to see more diverse fare. Notably, when Perry tried to step out of that bag, he was castigated.

Lee's work has evolved. Perry's detractors should allow for his films to undergo the same process.

Moviegoers shouldn't depend on just a handful of artists to tell the wide variety of stories that need telling. Spike Lee and the dreadlocked, open-mic, finger snappers should spend less time taking Perry to task and more time supporting independent black film.

Some black people think Perry's work reinforces some white people's negative perceptions of blacks and generally paints a negative portrait of an entire race of people, as if any single film or filmmaker is capable of that.

The bottom line is black people want more choices in the mainstream, and not just art-house films that are difficult to find.

12 Lust-Worthy Toys From Bike Fest

With something like 50 bike races ? road and mountain ? spread over four days, the Sea Otter Classic has become the unofficial kickoff to the U.S. cycling season. It has also, between the racing and the beer tents, become an important quasi-trade show for the bike industry, with demos, meetings and major product launches. For bike geeks, no event can match Sea Otter?s mix of racing action and pure gear porn.

Of course, we?re not racing (have we mentioned the beer tents?). We're prowling the festival grounds in search of product highlights. Here are some of the standouts from our first afternoon at the show, from the likes of Shimano, Santa Cruz, SRAM and Ibis. Check back for more.

Above:

Shimano's workhorse XT group gets a top-to-bottom makeover for 2011 that borrows heavily from the top-end XTR group the Japanese company launched last summer, including dual pedal options for race or trail applications, redesigned hydraulic brakes with cooling fins to dissipate heat, and a 10-speed rear cassette.

"XTR is the group for bike fanatics," said Shimano PR manager Devin Walton. "XT is for bike enthusiasts, people who ride a lot but also have maybe a surfboard, a snowboard. People who have a lot of fun and need dependable gear."

Fight For Ohio Union Rights Turns To The Ballot Box

Protesters gather at the Ohio Statehouse on April 9 to help launch the campaign to get a referendum on Ohio's Senate Bill 5, which curtails public workers' collective bargaining rights.

Over the past few months, Ohio has had its share of fighting over public sector unions' collective bargaining rights.

Earlier this year, thousands marched on the statehouse in Columbus, but those protests didn't get unions or their Democratic supporters very far. Senate Bill 5 passed the Republican-dominated Ohio Legislature on March 30 and Gov. John Kasich signed it into law the next day.

Now, Ohio unions are turning to Plan B: a good old-fashioned petition drive to get a referendum on the measure on the ballot this fall. And union members are saying the governor's action may have actually helped reinvigorate the state's labor movement.

'If It Passes Here, It's A Disease That's Gonna Spread'

About 100 or so locals recently crammed into an Irish pub in Portsmouth, Ohio, at the very southern tip of the state. They gathered to help repeal Senate Bill 5.

Austin Keyser, of a local electricians union, addressed the crowd.

"I don't care what they do. If they take away the right to strike and they take away arbitration, people are still going to demand to be treated with dignity," he said. "And there will still be strikes, and there will still be concerted activity to force them to pay a decent wage."

Public and private sector workers are uniting to fight Senate Bill 5. They need to get more than 230,000 signatures to put the issue of collective bargaining for public workers on the ballot this fall.

Portsmouth firefighter Nick Hamilton says the move to restrict the bargaining power of public workers has awakened Ohio's labor supporters.

"You lower the bar for the unions, you lower the bar for the whole country," he says. "Everybody realizes that Ohio is a politically empowered state and if it passes here, it's a disease that's gonna spread."

Legislators 'Ignite A Fire In The Populace'

Meanwhile, the state's Democrats are feeling anything but politically empowered. They lost the governor's seat, control of the Ohio House and seats in the Republican-controlled state Senate all in the 2010 elections. But Democratic state Senate Minority Leader Capri Cafaro says that won't keep Ohioans down.

"Anytime the government tries to take away rights that currently exist, it is going to ignite a fire in the populace, and I think that's what we've seen in the state of Ohio," she says.

According to Cafaro, Republicans have awakened a sleeping giant, and she predicts there will be consequences down the road.

"The public at large feels as if the Legislature and the executive branch are kind of abusing their power ? that they are overreaching in a way that is unprecedented, even under one-party rule," she says.

Republican state Senate President Tom Niehaus says he understands the protesters' concerns.

"Change is scary," he says. "And certainly if I were told some of the things ? if I were told some of the lies ? that some of these union members were told, I'd be out protesting too."

According to Niehaus, Ohio's government is in trouble. The state has a two-year $8 billion deficit and he says voters need to understand that they will ultimately benefit from limited collective bargaining.

"When you give a local school district, or you give a city council or a township trustee the ability ? through Senate Bill 5 ? to negotiate a reasonable contract with its employees, that helps every taxpayer in the state of Ohio," he says.

Niehaus and other state Republican leaders say they're ready to continue the conversation about unions at the ballot box. But union leaders say it's not concessions they're fighting for ? it's survival.

Understanding why airplanes crash

Air disasters does not look like a freak of nature. Not just happen. It does not just happen because someone touching the switch wrong or made a mistake. A philosopher once said: "Flying is inherently safe, but as the sea is terribly unforgiving of recklessness."

So what is an accident? A plane crash is the purpose of the flight from the source to destination, if an aircraft is defined damage, the deaths, injuries or damagesProperty. One thing is to understand that all accidents are caused by a chain of events. Sometimes this chain of events began hours, weeks or months before the accident is true, in some rare cases. When we speak of includes a chain of events a number of errors or incorrectly assessed. Not always the right information in time to the best decision could also lead to errors. Here is an example. The attack on 9 / 11 happened not because the U.S. Customs could determine thatTerrorist was trying to slip into the country. The attacks on 9 / 11 happened because the U.S. government has made a series of mistakes by the CIA, DOD, Customs, FAA and FBI. Likewise, if you have a plane crash, there is usually a group of people who margins, leading to the destruction of the pilots have contributed to air traffic controllers, maintenance, etc. However, one reason why flies so safe, why is the same group of people to maintain situational awarenessprovide a safe flight. The statistics also say it would be a 737 crash every day for a year, and would always still 25,000 years before the number is high.

They might be used by all the negative coverage in the media think that if an accident occurs. Normally it takes weeks later, the first, the whole chain of events that led to a specific accident to discover. The investigators of the incident with the help of the flight recorder and cockpit voice reconstructionRecorder. The flight data recorder keeps track of the aircraft parameters such as speed, height and length. The CVR records the conversation real cockpit. The pilots are required or CRM Cockpit Resource Management, to avoid errors that lead to a chain of events. CRM is a new concept that came in 1980. E 'means, with all resources, including systems, processes and people to promote safety and improve the efficiency of operations. An example ofCRM is a saying to the crew heard a small vibration on a flight. The crew examines the vibrations of resources such as the checklist to review with the cabin crew, passengers, or by calling the flight continued to solve the problem, the source of these oscillations. In others, including all passengers have an input when it comes to security. All you need to avoid an accident, is a well-trained crew with CRM to avoid criticism that the chainEvents to recognize, or if you started the chain and the recovery from him. In the real world, when a captain of a flight, you note that an error of assessment has been made, the captain, the risk of errors, correction will be evaluated and will focus on methods of attention to detail to maintain a safe flight.
