Russian Orthodox Church to Pussy Riot punk band: Repent before ...

MOSCOW -- The Russian Orthodox Church on Sunday called for members of the Pussy Riot punk band to repent, on the eve of an appeal court hearing they hope will quash their two-year jail sentences for performing an anti-Kremlin song in Moscow's main cathedral.

The three women - who belted out a "punk prayer" criticizing President Vladimir Putin's close ties to the Russian Orthodox Church - were convicted of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" by a district court on Aug. 17.

The tough jail sentences they received saw the West sharply criticize Putin and the Kremlin because of doubts over the independence of the judiciary, and global celebrities, including British musician Paul McCartney and U.S. pop singer Madonna, called for leniency for the women.

Vladimir Legoida, a senior church spokesman, said their stunt "must not remain unpunished whatever the justification," but said that any repentance, if expressed, should be taken into account.

Protesters put head covers on sculptures in Norway to show their continued support of the jailed Russian punk rock group called "Pussy Riot." NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

"The church sincerely wishes for the repentance of those who desecrated a holy place, certainly it would benefit their souls," Legoida said in a speech.

"If any words of the convicts indicate repentance ... we would wish that they are not left unnoticed and those who violated the law get a chance to mend their ways."

A church statement after the August verdict indicated that the clergy would back a pardon or a reduced sentence, but that would have required Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alyokhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, to admit their guilt, something their lawyers say they will not do.

"If they (the church) mean repentance in the sense of a crime ... it definitely won't happen. Our clients won't admit guilt. A call for that is pointless," lawyer Mark Feigin told independent television channel Dozhd on Sunday.

Earlier this month, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that keeping the women?in prison any longer would be "unproductive" ? a statement that encouraged hopes the appeals court could set them free. But skeptics pointed at the Kremlin's ongoing crackdown on dissent, saying that their release would be unlikely.

A recent official opinion poll showed that more than half of Russians are critical of what Pussy Riot did and consider their two-year jail sentence to be a just one, with less than a third saying the opposite.

Members of the band Pussy Riot, arrested in February after storming a Moscow cathedral, were sentenced to two years in jail Friday. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

The trio's legal team and relatives hold out little hope that the sentences - which they believe are excessively harsh - will be quashed or reduced at the hearing scheduled for Monday, whether they repent or not.

"The sentence is predetermined; their repentance will not affect it in any way," Stanislav Samutsevich, father of one of the jailed women, told Reuters.

"The fact the church is calling for that is nothing but a public relations move to sustain their reputation in the eyes of the public, as the church says it is separate from the state."

Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, has called Putin's 12-year rule a "miracle of God" and backed his presidential election campaign earlier this year.

Kirill dismissed criticism of his backing for the Kremlin on Friday, telling students that close ties between the church and state helped protect and develop society.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Construction-America's Most Dangerous Industry

New Source: JusticeNewsFlash.com
You would think workers? safety on a work site should be first and foremost on everyone?s agenda. Workers? safety is of the utmost importance and employers should do everything in their power to make sure that their workers? health and welfare are protected. Unfortunately, in New York, as developers and construction companies push forward with new development, construction workers? safety is often compromised in the interest of speed and frugality, and while the state has a comprehensive body of labor laws in place to protect workers, such incidents are still unfortunately too common an occurrence.

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, construction is one of the most dangerous industries nationally, accounting for over 20% of all workplace deaths in 2009. Even though Labor Law sec. 240, known as the ?Scaffold Law? is in place to protect construction site employees working at elevated heights, accidents involving falls from high places still remain a leading cause of injury and death at New York construction sites. Nationally, almost a third of the construction fatalities referenced above for 2009 involved falls from elevated heights at construction sites. As recently as this week, a construction worker who had been helping to complete the building of WTC 4 had fallen 5 to 6 feet onto a steel rebar resulting in serious injuries. This is a far too common occurrence to ignore and simply hope for the best.

Plans to reform the ?Scaffold Law? itself may create an immense challenge for injured construction workers. ?There are forces at work in the New York State Senate to put an end to the absolute liability of contractors when an accident occurs on a construction site due to the negligence of a worker. While these changes to the current law may help decrease costs for the contractor, it would severely increase the risk for the construction worker. If an on-site accident should occur, trying to figure out who is at fault can become quite complex. Injured construction workers would no longer have the comfort of knowing they will be taken care of should an injury occur on the job. Workers would need to hire legal representation in order to prove they were not the cause of the injuries in order to get the assistance they deserve. Contractors also would not be required to adhere to strict regulations regarding the safety of the construction site such as employing properly constructed scaffolding. This is a scary thought for those who put their life on the line every day in order to earn a living.

The construction industry is dangerous, where accidents are frequent and unpredictable. The current ?Scaffold Law? has not eliminated falls as the leading cause of injury and death at construction sites, and the reforms under consideration will further put construction workers in danger. These brave workers deserve to be protected by the law. Unfortunately, the rights of injured construction workers and what they are entitled to are often left open for debate.

US in command with 8-4 lead at Ryder Cup

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? The Americans are turning the Ryder Cup into a rout.

Sparked by Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson's record-tying performance, the U.S. won all but one match Saturday morning to take a commanding 8-4 lead over Europe.

The largest comeback in Ryder Cup history was at Brookline in 1999, when the U.S. erased a 10-6 deficit on the final day.

"I keep telling the guys we're not even halfway over with this tournament so far," captain Davis Love III said. "There's a lot of points left, let's keep doing what we're doing. They're buying into it, they're playing great."

This is the largest lead the Americans have had after three sessions since the Ryder Cup expanded to include players from continental Europe in 1979. They need 14? points to win the Ryder Cup.

Europe avoided a sweep thanks to ? who else? ? Ian Poulter and Justin Rose, who beat Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson 1 up. Poulter has Europe's best winning percentage in Ryder Cup play with a 10-3-0 record, and there was no way he was going to let the Americans take a point from his match.

"It was absolutely key," Poulter said. "Jose put us out No. 1 for a reason, and that's to get the point and put the point up on the board."

Just as they did Friday, the Americans got their spark from Bradley. He's got more energy and enthusiasm than a 4-year-old hopped up on Pixie Stix, sprinting out to the first hole a half-hour before his tee time to encourage fans to get louder and rowdier. Finally satisfied, he grinned and sprinted back to the locker room.

But it wasn't long before he and Lefty had the crowd worked up again. The two are on such a roll they didn't even have to putt to win their first two holes against Lee Westwood and Luke Donald on Saturday.

The Europeans conceded No. 1 when Mickelson put his second within 2 feet of the pin, and they gave the Americans No. 2 after Westwood put his tee shot in the water and missed the bogey putt.

Mickelson's gorgeous wedge set up Bradley with an 8-footer for birdie on No. 4, and he knocked it in easily, letting out a roar when the ball dropped into the cup. The Americans went 6 up when Donald saw another putt lip out on 10, and the Europeans may as well have conceded then, the result was so inevitable.

Sure enough, two holes later, Mickelson played a perfect wedge from the rough, hitting the green about 20 feet left of the pin and trickling down a slope to within a foot of the cup.

"Phil is a good partner to Keegan," Donald said. "He's obviously been a rock star this week, and they did nothing wrong."

Their 7-and-6 win, in fact, matched the mark for most lopsided score in an 18-hole team match. Two other teams have won 7 and 6, both foursomes, with Paul Azinger and Mark O'Meara in 1991 the last to do it.

The victory improved Bradley to 3-0, the best Ryder Cup start for a rookie since the guy he was playing with in 1995. And it handed Donald his second straight loss in foursomes after going unbeaten in his first six matches.

The U.S. got another big boost in the final match, Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker's 1-up victory over Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.

The Northern Irish duo are considered Europe's top team, the No. 1 player in the world and the guy who delivered the winning point for Europe two years ago at Celtic Manor. But they've looked almost ordinary since Furyk and Snedeker forced them to grind out a victory in Friday's foursomes, and they couldn't overcome their slow start Saturday.

"We were just parring the place to death, which is not good enough in this format," McDowell said. "We just couldn't get the ball to go in the hole. Rory had a few putts in particular that burned some edges, and we just couldn't get any momentum going."

Take the last three holes. A nice iron by McDowell gave McIlroy an easy birdie putt on 16, and he made it to pare Furyk and Snedeker's lead to 1 up. But McIlroy followed that with a miss on a 15-footer that would have evened the match on 17.

McIlroy's monster drive on 18 put the Europeans in good position to scratch out a halve ? especially after Snedeker went in a bunker off the tee. But McDowell flew the green on the second shot, leaving McIlroy with a long putt from the fringe. He nearly made it, but his line was about a half-inch too far to the right and McIlroy groaned as he watched it roll on by.

When Snedeker got a 25-footer to about a foot, the Europeans conceded.

"We are in a hole," McDowell said. "These guys, there's blood in the water and they're up for it. They've got a head of steam up and we've got to try and stop it."

How cultural differences affect mobile use | weareallmukmuks.com

Editor?s note: Mobile phones have become an essential part of our everyday life. Through a special month-long series, ?Our Mobile Society,? we examine how phones and tablets are changing the way we live.

In the UK, it is called a mobile, in the U.S. cell phone, in Latin America celular, in Japan keitai (portable), in China shou-ji (hand machine), in Bangladesh muthophone (phone in the palm of your hand), in Sweden nalle (teddy bear), in Israel Pelephone (wonder phone) and in Germany a handy.

In Japan, train commuters receive a barrage of recorded announcements telling them to switch their mobiles to silent or vibrate, referred to as ?manner mode?. Using a mobile in public is frowned upon in a land where collective needs are put above the individual?s.

?Japanese culture highly values social harmony and social disturbance is heavily sanctioned,? explains Satomi Sugiyama, associate professor at Franklin College Switzerland.

If someone tries to board a bus while taking a call, the driver will not let them on, adds cultural anthropologist Mizuko Ito. ?In Japan your phone shouldn?t be a nuisance to others,? she says. ?This means generally keeping it on manner mode when out of the house, and not taking calls in cafes and restaurants. If somebody?s phone rings, they will be flustered and silence it or take very quick call,? Ito explains.

The density of urban spaces, the high use of public transportation, and the relative lack of privacy in homes contribute to ways of communicating that don?t impose on others, she explains.

Texting, mobile email, games and novels are more popular than voice calls among the Japanese.

In Spain and Italy, in contrast, mobiles are used everywhere and people discuss their personal lives loudly in public. Renfe, the state-owned train operating company in Spain, once promoted its journeys on a poster depicting conversations people can have with their partners on cell phones from the train.

Smartphones are the new wingman

The Spanish, like the Italians, happily answer calls in restaurants, during business meetings, conferences and even sometimes during concerts. Discreetly texting or instant messaging under the table during meetings is also commonplace, Amparo Lasén, professor of sociology at the University Complutense de Madrid, says.

Spanish people have always discussed their private lives in the streets, so doing so on mobile is just an evolution of that. ?Sometimes Spanish people leave movie theaters just to check what is happening on their phone,? Lasén says.

?You have an obligation to be available to close friends, colleagues and customers. There is an obligation of accountability,? she adds.

However, it is not the Spaniards but the Finns who are the chattiest on their mobiles in Europe, clocking up an average of 257 minutes a month, according to GSMA?s European Mobile Observatory 2011.

Then again, it is the homeland of Nokia. Austrians follow closely behind the Finns at 240 minutes of use, while the Maltese spend the least time talking ? an average of 46 minutes per month.

In parts of India and Africa, there is also a culture of split-second calls known as ?flashing? or ?beeping.? Jonathan Donner, a researcher at Microsoft India who published a paper on ?The Rules of Beeping,? said: ?Beeping is simple: A person calls a mobile telephone number and then hangs up before the mobile?s owner can pick up the call.?

The mobile owner can then phone them back, thus picking up the tab for the call.

Donner first came across ?beeping? in Rwanda and tracked it?s use across Africa. He said the practice has many different meanings from ?Come and pick me up?, to ?Hi?, to ?I?m thinking of you? to ?Call me back.?

Read related: Seven ways mobile phones have changed Africa

As blogger Shashank Bengali writes: ?There are unwritten but deeply observed rules for flashing. When your mechanic wants to tell you your car is ready, for example, he can flash you ? it?s your car, after all, and if you want it back, you?d better call him.

?It?s also hierarchical: an employee calling a superior, who makes more money, is justified in flashing ? unless he really needs a favor.?

He sounds a note of warning though: ?If you?re trying to woo a lady, don?t flash her. Ever.?

In India it is common for people to take calls inside a movie theater. People don?t know if the call is important so they pick up, Umang Shah, of PhiMetrics, a telecom audit and consulting firm in India, says. Like in Spain, few Indians have or use voicemail, he added.

Another quirk about India is that the caller may get to hear a Bollywood song, chosen by the subscriber instead of a ringing tone. Known as caller tunes, the subscriber is charged for this monthly and according to Shah, they are a big money-spinner. This is also common in parts of Africa where a caller might hear a quote from the Bible.

In both continents, it is also common for people to take calls inside a movie theater. ?Even at highly official functions, during speeches and so on people in India take the call,? Kadira Pethiyagoda, visiting doctoral student at St. Anthony?s College, Oxford, says.

?Indian society has a long tradition of tolerance, including in terms of allowing others to infringe on what those in the West would consider one?s personal space,? he says. This is why phone use in cinemas and crowded trains, is tolerated, he adds. ?Indian society is also more communal than the West which, in part, leads to an increased importance of constantly staying in touch,? he adds.

?People pick up their phones everywhere in Africa. The only places they don?t are the mosque or the church,? Abdullahi Arabo, BT research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute, explains.

?Part of it is showing off that they have the device and if the call is from far away they like to show it?s an international call.?

In Japanese movie halls, on the contrary, 45-year-old Tokyo housewife Kanako Shibamoto says ?we are not allowed to even put phones into silent mode because the light of the screen might make other people annoyed.?

Mobile manufacturers have also created double sim card handsets for the emerging markets so they can simultaneously benefit from the best data and voice deals. In general, Indians chat for an average of 346 minutes a month, benefiting from extremely low rates of 0.5 rupee (less than half a cent) a minute. Multiple sim ownership is common across Asia, Africa and Latin America.

In Africa, it is because most of the service providers are unreliable and they can?t get a signal, Arabo says.

In the U.S., a Synovate market research poll found that 72 per cent of Americans considered loud conversations in public places to be the worst habits of cell phone users. Now the new gripe appears to be iPhone 4S users repeating simple questions to Apple?s Siri, a robotic assistant.

?People seem to be accepting of phone calls but not of people talking to a disembodied voice on their phone,? says Jane Vincent, visiting fellow at the Digital World Research Centre, University of Surrey.

Unlike Japan, texting has not taken off massively in America, because ?differing networks did not work well together in the early days of mobile communication causing dysfunctional text messaging across networks,? says Scott Campbell, professor of telecommunications at the University of Michigan.

?In addition, AOL played a role in slowing down adoption and use, especially of text messaging,? he added. Campbell also said mobile internet has been slow on the uptake there as digital media tablets are becoming popular ways of going online.

?They have a larger screen and better interface than mobile.?

The Happy Entrepreneur (by Paul W. Smith)

037-Steve Jobs Happy Face-1

I?ve asked myself the following question literally hundreds of times.? There are stacks of books with entrepreneurial stories, books about the life of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison, et al.? We know these guys are driven, talented, obsessed, ruthless, workaholic and a little bit lucky (see, e.g., How to Spot an Entrepreneur).? We envy them and even try to model our lives after them, but why?? What makes them happy?

A passion for the pinnacle of money, power and prestige could be a good answer, but surely these high achievers know that someone always comes along to nudge you off the platform.? Consider Bill Gates; in an astonishing display of fiscal virility, he rented the entire Hawaiian island of Lanai for his wedding to Melinda.? One would assume this was a happy occasion, as they are still husband and wife after 18 years.? Bill set a new standard for opulence, until billionaire Larry Ellison came along and bought Lanai outright.? Larry has not been forthcoming about his intentions for the purchase (to date, he has been married and divorced four times).?

It is worthwhile to remember that ?happiness? is much more than a new-age, feel-good buzzword sparring with ?balanced?, ?centered? and ?good karma? in the titles of bestsellers and self-improvement workshops.? America?s founders trusted Thomas Jefferson with drafting the first version of the Declaration of Independence, and his second sentence is one of the most elegant and profound ever written.? There is more to this journey than just life and liberty from British rule, Jefferson wrote.? It is also about pursuing happiness.?

Although this happiness thing is in our mission statement, it has proven elusive.? In 1988, Bobby McFerrin promoted a two step process, the first of which was ?Don?t worry.?? Whether or not it worked, it made Bobby a lot of money.? History is unclear on how happy he was.

Politicians routinely ask if we are better off now than we were four years ago.? Numbers are tallied and scrutinized.? How much do we earn?? How many new homes are we building?? How many iPhone5?s were sold in the first 24 hours?? It?s been over 200 years since Jefferson suggested happiness as one of the key metrics of the American experiment and the government still hasn?t found a good way to measure it.?

The traditional metric for happiness has been the GDP per capita, a number representing the total value of goods and services produced in the country per unit human.? This presumed surrogate for standard of living only works if making and using stuff leads us to happiness.? According to the CIA (one of several agencies which tabulate GDP data) the top three countries in the world in this category are Monaco, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg.? The U.S. is in the 19th spot.?

?We love to talk about people who are poor but happy and rich people who are probably miserable, but what?s the real story?? The polling gurus at Gallup took it straight to the source, surveying folks directly to ask just how happy they really are.? The results show the top three happiest countries are Denmark, Finland and Norway.? On this list the U.S. ranks 11th, just ahead of Costa Rica.

The confusing message in this data has not gone unnoticed.? Americans are kicking butt on Life and Liberty, but two out of three is just not good enough.? Inquiring minds need to know; are we happy??

There?s a saying in engineering ? ?You can?t control it if you can?t measure it.?? Vermont, Maryland, Seattle, Somerville, Wisconsin and California?s Nevada City are just a few of the states and cities that are developing measures of happiness. ?The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is working on an official index.? This stuff we keep getting more of, is it really the right stuff?? What if economic growth is harming the environment without improving the real quality of life?

For many pragmatists the whole idea of happiness is just too ?fluffy?.? Work hard, stay focused, count your blessings, and be thankful you?re not living in a poor country like the tiny South Asian nation of Bhutan, where the average life expectancy is 67 years and annual income is $2000.?

Back in 1972, the King of Bhutan, sensing that money and happiness were not well correlated, called for a Gross National Happiness index.? National policies based on the GNH limit tourism, ban tobacco, and keep motorists away from town centers every Tuesday.? The 7 million people of Bhutan are warm, friendly, and measurably happier than they were 40 years ago.?

You don?t have to travel to Bhutan to see that GDP per capita is leaving out something important.? At the beginning of his Presidential campaign in 1968, Senator Robert Kennedy said the GDP?

"...does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages ? it measures everything in short, except that which makes life worthwhile."

It is tempting to think of ?The Happy Entrepreneur? as a risk taker who has put up big numbers.? Perhaps the definition should be revised to look more like this;

entrepreneur [ahn-truh-pruh-noor] noun; an enterprising individual who builds happiness through risk and initiative, accepting full responsibility for the outcome.

As citizens of this great country we are entitled, in fact we are expected, to pursue happiness. ?Soon the Federal Government will be telling us exactly how happy we really are.? Once that happens, things are bound to get better.

Don?t worry.

A's?rough up?Rangers, trail by only 3 games

By STEPHEN HAWKINS

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Oakland Athletics may be able to do better than just get into the playoffs as a wild card.

They might sneak away with a division title if they keep playing like this against the AL West-leading Texas Rangers.

Oakland led for good only three batters into the game and chased Texas starter Martin Perez before the end of the first inning in a 9-3 victory Wednesday night to pull within three games with seven to play, four against the Rangers.

"To come out there and get these guys was the biggest series of the road trip. These are the guys we are trying to catch," Josh Reddick said. "A lot of people want to say we can get the wild card. We're trying to still win this division. ... It's definitely possible."

The Athletics (88-67) have taken two of the first three games in the series that ends with a day game Thursday. That will also wrap up a stretch of six series in six cities before ending the regular season with six games at home.

"We lost a tough one the first night (in Texas). For me, it was even more important to come back and win the next day and follow it up with a good performance today," manager Bob Melvin said. "Certainly it would be nice to win tomorrow, but at this point, these two games I think were big for us."

The Los Angeles Angels (86-69) remained within two games of Oakland for the AL's second wild card spot by winning their fifth game in a row later Wednesday night, 4-3 over Seattle.

Oakland, which had played five consecutive one-run games, led 5-0 only eight batters into the game. The A's chased Perez (1-3) before the rookie left-hander got all the way through the batting order one time.

Yoenis Cespedes had one of Oakland's two triples in the first inning.

After Cespedes' one-out triple, the A's had three consecutive singles. The last was Josh Donaldson's grounder up the middle that then rolled under the glove of center fielder Josh Hamilton for a two-base error, making it 4-0. Derek Norris tripled to left-center on a liner Hamilton appeared to misplay and let get over his head.

While not the best timing for the Rangers (91-64) to play a game like this, Hamilton said they're not panicking.

"It is what it is," Hamilton said. "I'm not going to give in or put my head down or start crying or collapse all over myself, and the team's not going to do that either. Come back tomorrow."

The magic number remained at five for the two-time defending American League champion Rangers, who host the Angels for three games this weekend.

Matt Harrison (17-10), the All-Star left-hander, starts for Texas in the series finale against Oakland, when he will try to become the Rangers' first 18-game winner since Kenny Rogers in 2004. He faces lefty Travis Blackley (5-3).

"If we come back tomorrow and win the ballgame, they leave out of here the same way they came in," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "We feel like we're going to win tomorrow. We just didn't get it done tonight."

Stephen Drew had four of Oakland's 16 hits, including a double leading off the game before scoring on Cespedes' triple into the right-center gap.

The only Oakland starter without a hit was No. 9 hitter Cliff Pennington. Even Reddick ended a career-long 0-for-30 slump with singles in the seventh and ninth innings.

Rookie righty Jarrod Parker (12-8) won his third consecutive decision over four starts. He struck out eight in six innings, and his 109 pitches were his most since 111 on June 4, when he threw eight scoreless innings and allowed only one hit against the Rangers in Oakland.

The Athletics set an AL record for striking out the most in a season with their 11 against six Texas pitchers. They have 1,333, nine more than Tampa Bay had in 2007, and they still have seven games left.

"Despite that number, we're having a great year and winning some ballgames," Reddick said. "Just kind of throw that stat out the window as long as scoring runs."

A night after Yu Darvish was scratched from his scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and Scott Feldman and five other relievers were needed in a 10-inning loss, the Rangers were already back in their bullpen before the end of the first inning.

Wilmer Font, the third Texas pitcher, walked the only two batters he faced to start the third before Drew's two-run single made it 7-3. Moss doubled and scored on a single by Norris an inning later.

Parker walked leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler before Elvis Andrus doubled off the left-center field wall. Michael Young and David Murphy had consecutive singles to start the second, scoring on a fielder's choice grounder by Mitch Moreland and a sacrifice fly by Andrus that made it 5-3.

Chris Carter's strikeout in the second inning was the third of the game for the A's, and pushed them past the 2007 Rays. Oakland already is well past its previous franchise mark of 1,226 strikeouts in 2008.

"At this point, it just kind of goes with the territory," Melvin said. "At least we're not hitting into double plays."

NOTES: Oakland is 51-25 since the start of July, the best record in the majors over that span. ... The A's are 8-7 against Texas this season. ... The start by Perez was the shortest for a Ranger since July 2, 2011, when Derek Holland also got only two outs facing eight batters against Florida. ... Perez got his first major league victory on June 30, against the A's at Rangers Ballpark. ... Yoshinori Tateyama struck out four in 2 1-3 innings, and was the only Rangers pitcher who didn't allow a base runner.

Scientists Go Deep On Genes Of SARS-Like Virus

Coronaviruses get their name from the crown-like tentacles that surround their rims.

When an unknown virus emerges, disease detectives turn to gene sequencers ? not magnifying glasses ? to identify the culprit.

So when a new type of coronavirus killed a man in Saudia Arabia and hospitalized another in the U.K., investigators got cracking.

Both patients showed symptoms similar SARS. But thanks to fast and accurate gene sequencing, health officials quickly realized that this isn't SARS or even a known coronavirus that causes colds. Rather it's a totally new virus that needs to be handled with caution until more is known about it.

Yesterday scientists at Britain's Health Protection Agency partially decoded the new virus's genetic sequence. They've placed the virus on the family tree of coronaviruses. And even given the virus a temporary name, which I have to warn you is quite a mouthful: London1_novel CoV 2012.

The virus appears to be most closely related to a cluster of bat viruses, and "it is genetically very different than SARS," Ralph Baric, a microbiologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, tells Shots.

But the DNA sequence isn't just a tool for hanging the virus on the right branch of the family tree. It has helped health workers rapidly respond to the disease in ways they couldn't when SARS emerged in China in 2002.

? The new coronavirus has been tentatively named London1_novel CoV 2012. A small piece of its genome tells researchers how closely related the virus is to other known coronavirus, such as SARS. Courtesy of Health Protection Agency.

The new coronavirus has been tentatively named London1_novel CoV 2012. A small piece of its genome tells researchers how closely related the virus is to other known coronavirus, such as SARS.

With the new virus's DNA at their fingertips, health workers alerted the WHO about the potentially dangers of the virus just three weeks after the second patient showed symptoms.

With the SARS epidemic, it took over three months ? and hundreds of infected people ? before the WHO was contacted. That epidemic caused over 8,000 infections and killed nearly a thousand people.

This rapid detection of new viruses, Baric says, is due in part to a technology, called deep sequencing. The method allows scientists to differentiate closely related viruses and ones that are rapidly mutating. Deep sequencing decodes genes at a very high level of accuracy so even small changes are visible.

Since the SARS epidemic, virologists have used deep sequencing to discover dozens of new coronavirus in bats, badgers, birds and humans from around the world. They've built a family tree of coranviruses with these sequences showing how the viruses relate to each other.

When a new virus appears on the scene, like the London strain, scientists can quickly sequence it and figure out where it fits in. If it sits on top of a known pathogen, then doctors may have a good idea of how to counter it. If it's completely new, as in this case, health workers can alert the WHO and take extra precautions before it spreads.

The genetic code for the new coronavirus also gives doctors a tool for quickly finding new cases, Baric say. They can even go "back in time and see if the virus caused other strange respiratory illnesses over the past few months," Baric says.

"It is fairly common for doctors to keep samples from fatal respiratory cases," Baric says. Doctors can now sequence the samples and look for the new virus's genes.

Baric thinks these types of tools make deep sequencing "one of the most important advances in public health."

"There's tremendous expertise and capabilities for identifying and tracking new viruses" he says. "This is a huge public health advantage and it's been put in place [since the SARS epidemic] to protect the global health."

Cancer couldn't stop remodeling project

When doctors told Lynn Steinle she had stage four lung cancer, she decided to spend the remaining time doing stuff she wanted to do. DSC_0010A photograph of Lynn Steinle, who died from cancer on New Year?s Day in 2011, is displayed in her family?s remodeled kitchen in Elm Grove on Thursday, Sept. 20. In spite of the cancer diagnosis, Steinle went ahead with a kitchen remodeling project, hoping that it would be featured in the Kitchens for a Cause Walk. (Catholic Herald photo by Ricardo Torres).

Unlike many people, she did not quit her job, travel to Europe or take a cruise. Rather, she did what she always did; she worked long hours as founder and co-owner of Strategic Employee Benefits Services, associated with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, took care of her family, volunteered at her parish, St. Mary Visitation in Elm Grove, and crafted handmade soap for friends and family.

If that were not enough, despite surgery to remove one of her lungs, she embarked on a massive project to remodel her kitchen; and she did it with such gusto, that it seems to be a personal legacy, left behind for her husband Tim, and children Jacob, 26, Daniel, 25, and Abigail, 22, to enjoy.

The kitchen remodeling was one of the final touches on the renovation of their 1930s Tudor-style home; the couple had already renovated the upstairs, including bathrooms. After five years of discussing what they wanted in a kitchen, Lynn and Tim were to sign papers on Dec. 1, 2008 with Design Group Three as the architectural design firm, but instead of celebrating the beginning of the project, they were devastated with the cancer diagnosis.

?I hated to tell her, but we just had to put the project on hold and she agreed,? explained Tim. ?She was just 53 years of age and it was such an (expletive) diagnosis.?

Ready to revisit project

Not long after the grim news, one of Lynn?s lungs was surgically removed and by summer of 2009, she was ready to revisit the remodeling project.

?She came up to me one day that summer and told me, ?I don?t know what the Lord has in store for me, but I want my kitchen done,?? recalled Tim, a Milwaukee attorney. ?I told her, ?Sweetie, I think this is a big problem; you had your lung removed and with the dust and everything associated with this project, I just don?t think it is a good idea.??

Despite his objections, Lynn?s fervent desire to complete the project won out. For months, the couple lived behind plastic curtains and cooked out of the toaster oven and microwave.

?It was important to her to have a kitchen that she could entertain in,? said Tim. ?We both love to cook. Lynn was a career woman and was very successful in her own business. We were both involved in raising our three kids, who are all adults now and we shared in the family cooking. Lynn really enjoyed the holidays and having people over for Thanksgiving and Christmas. In all those years, our house was filled with family, and every time we had a party, everyone naturally gathered in the kitchen. With a tiny galley kitchen, it wasn?t conducive for entertaining, and Lynn wanted a kitchen where everyone could gather together.?

While it was difficult living among dust, plastic and construction noise for the nine-month project, Tim admitted he would do it again to make her happy. To her, the project seemed cathartic, a glimpse of the lives that would continue, no matter her personal outcome.

The project was completed by spring of 2010 and included removing walls, adding a large island equipped with electrical outlets to accommodate Tim?s computer and a 42-inch wall mounted TV.

?The kitchen is bright and beautiful, it has her all over it, and we had fun picking out a lot of it together,? said Tim. ?She got to enjoy the kitchen through the summer and fall and then died on New Year?s Day, 2011, just two days before our 30th wedding anniversary.?

Shared time, talents with many

For 26 years, Lynn was involved with philanthropic efforts in Milwaukee, and the Elm Grove community, including the Christian Women?s Society of St. Mary Visitation Parish. She wanted to feature her newly remodeled kitchen on the first Kitchens for a Cause Kitchen Walk in May 2011, according to Lynne Miller, member of the Kitchens for a Cause Committee, but it was completed too late to include it in the spring tour.

?This year we are honored to showcase her home on our tour,? Miller said. ?Not only was Lynn an avid member of the Christian Women?s Society, she volunteered at all of our parish functions, and shared her time and talents with Marquette University High School and Pius XI High School. She taught us all many lessons on living life to the fullest and she is greatly missed.?

Proceeds to benefit Jesuit Nativity School

The Steinle home will be one of nine homes with newly remodeled kitchens included on the walking tour, which will raise funds for new refrigeration equipment at Jesuit Nativity Middle School?s Camp Thunderhead.DSC_0035The Steinle family?s kitchen in Elm Grove will be one of nine featured in the Kitchens for the Cause Kitchen Walk on Saturday, Sept. 29. Lynn Steinle died New Year?s Day in 2011, before it could be featured in the inaugural Kitchen Walk in spring. (Catholic Herald photo by Ricardo Torres)

Tim asked that this year?s efforts benefit Nativity, as the school is the male counterpart to the all-girls Notre Dame Middle School. The school system is one that he and his wife have supported.

Nativity, an independent Catholic middle school, was founded in 1993 to serve low-income Hispanic boys in grades six through eight. Since the school?s inception, Nativity has graduated 256 boys, most of whom have gone on to attend private college preparatory high schools, and 75 percent of graduates continue on to post secondary education.

Each summer, Nativity students spend five weeks at Camp Thunderhead, a residential summer camp in northern Wisconsin. While there, the boys build on their academic skills while enjoying outdoor sports and camaraderie. The camp?s kitchen needs modern commercial refrigeration equipment and proceeds from the walk will help the school purchase it.

?When Jean Kelly, (co-president of Milwaukee Archdiocesan Council of Christian Women) came to me and told me about the kitchen walk and how all the proceeds go to some form of education and asked if I would open my kitchen to the tour, and that they wanted to honor her, it was easy to say yes,? said Tim. ?These beautiful ladies do all the work of the open house, and my daughter, Abby, will be coming home and Lynne?s sister, Sherry, will be involved as well.?

Last year 150 guests raised $15,000 in the Kitchens for a Cause tour to update the kitchen of Notre Dame Middle School and this year, the Christian Women?s Society hopes to double the number of visitors.

Tour features unique kitchens

?This year we have a very unique group of nine homes,? said Miller. ?In addition to our host home, we have a 1920s Tudor designed by Eschweiler featured across the street from a very ultra modern design nestled between two wooded glacial kettles, a 1937 Cape Cod home that was originally a goat farm, a fairy tale ?Hansel and Gretel? cottage style home built in the 1930s, designed by architect R. Harold Zook, and a one story ranch that was completely overhauled to produce a spectacular two-story masterpiece. There are large kitchens that spill into beautiful family rooms, as well as smaller kitchens that maximize the space with their unique designs and appliance placement.?

Although Lynn will not be physically part of the tour, Miller said she would have been the first in line to purchase a ticket, and would have talked a dozen friends into attending as well.

?She was so generous with her time and talent, supporting charitable causes with beautiful raffle baskets, working the events and promoting the cause,? said Miller. ?Her strong Catholic faith led her to volunteer for many groups at St. Mary Visitation. She lived her faith in both her words and her actions, always helping others in our local community and the surrounding areas.?

Excited to share her sister?s legacy and vision, Sherry Dieringer-Wahlberg and the couple?s daughter, Abby, will welcome visitors to the Steinle kitchen.

?Abby will continue with one of Lynn?s traditions of soap making,? said Wahlberg.

Despite cancer, she remained faith-filled

Wahlberg is eager to share stories of her sister to inquiring visitors, giving them a rare glimpse into Lynn?s life, her home, her selfless actions, strong faith and desire to leave the world a better place.

?She worked very hard, made a lot of money and gave a lot of money away,? said Wahlberg. ?She was very dedicated to underprivileged kids and wanting those kids to get a religious connection.?

Despite her cancer diagnosis, Lynn never wavered from her faith, nor complained to others about her pain.

?She was incredible and always downplayed the pain she was in,? said Wahlberg. ?You could see it in her face and in her movements, yet she always said she was fine. She was an example for anyone on how to handle a disease ? she was just incredible all the way to the end. She loved her job so much, and Tim would have loved for her to stop working, go to Ireland and travel, but her passion was her job. She worked up to three weeks before she died. It was important for her to get dressed and go into the office so people cold see she was still functional.?

Tim agreed, and added that the suffering seemed to make his wife stronger, and remembers her telling him that it was better she died than someone else. For him, while he admits his faith isn?t shaken, he does have questions.

?I do have questions about why things happen, and philosophically, some questions,? he disclosed.

In the days and weeks after Lynn died, Tim remembers wanting to close his doors and stay in bed; but because of his three children, who were also grieving the loss of their mother, he knew that he had to continue as an example to them.

?I stay active, continue living and working and doing what I did before,? he said. ?I am an outdoorsman and enjoying hunting, fishing and going to my summer home with my kids. I try to stay busy, but I tell you, I live alone now, and evenings are a very lonely time for me. I am happy to be part of this cause and think what they are doing is magnificent. I am honored by whatever they do and while I don?t understand things in this life ? I do know that I will see her someday.?

Buzzword bingo for #intranet conferences | Intranetizen

Posted by @lukemepham on September 27, 2012 in Content, Networking | 0 comments

Are you tired of ?thinking outside the box?? Well we are too, and according to a recent survey, so are your intranet?s users. In a recent poll, employees admitted to being baffled by?workplace jargon?ten times a day on average.

In this special pre-conference post, the Intranetizens explain why jargon should be both avoided and embraced, and invite you to test their commitment to clear communication.

Specialist language has its place in the workplace, and on your intranet too (sometimes). But overused, it makes communications hard to understand and web pages difficult to find (if your pages say ?earth moving implement? and your colleagues are searching for a spade, your intranet is only going to disappoint).

Internal communicators have traditionally fought the good fight against complicated jargon, but as content management on intranets has become devolved to the business, it?s important anyone with content-editing responsibility understand how to make their communications clear. To avoid your intranet becoming an indecipherable mess of departmental buzzwords, ensure your editors get some training and guidance on best practice and writing for the web.

And for God?s sake, avoid corporate talk in all of your own content. The next time you feel the need to reach out, touch base, shift a paradigm, leverage a best practice or create synergy, by all means do it. Just don?t?say?you?re doing it in your online communications. Before pressing publish, think ?is there an easier way to say this??.

That kind of language has it place, though. If you?re talking to execs about your intranet ideas and proposals, you?ll need to speak their language ? even if that language is essentially bullshit. The role of the intranet manager is to speak to users and stakeholders about their needs and translate this into a clear, costed business proposal that execs can sign off. That means gaining the trust of your senior execs and budget-holders, by presenting your ideas and findings to them in a way they can understand.

The latest tech buzzwords can also be annoying; but again, they have their place. As we blogged last week, gamification is an ugly word for a generally sound concept. All too many of these words (collaboration, social, engagement) have become thrown around so much that their intent has been lost. But if buzzwords are what?s needed to convince your budget-holders, then it?s a small price to pay.

Intranet managers are a rare breed ? as well as speaking the lingo of users across the business, and of execs, we?re fluent in Geek. We take what users tell us and translate this into solid requirements that can be turned into functioning pages and software by our friends in IT. There are few roles which see you involved with ? and talking to ? such a wide range of stakeholders as intranet management. That?s what makes it one of the finest jobs around.

But you don?t need to talk in buzzwords to talk about intranets, and we and Intranetizen try not to. We tells it as it is, keep it real, etc. And to prove that, we are inviting those of you who are attending Interaction next week to hold us to it.

We?ve produced a series of Intranet Buzzword Bingo cards for you to download and use when we appear at Interaction Intranet Conference next week, and any conferences we speak at in the future.

Pick one of these five cards, then listen out as we try to get through our lightning presentations without using too much intranet jargon.

If you can get through a whole presentation (let alone a whole conference) without checking off more than one buzz word from your card ? you are probably at a great conference learning some great new things? or you have stumbled into the wrong place and you?re at a AA meeting, or something.

The Power of Relationship Marketing | Auto Shop Management Blog

Auto Shop Management Blog ? ? The Power of Relationship Marketing

The Power of Relationship Marketing

Do you like this story?

Marketing and advertising focus on eliciting a desired reaction from prospective or existing customers. When people are exposed to marketing images and information they interpret the message conveyed and absorb it based on their own understanding. Thus they formulate a conclusion as to what their relationship with the business communicating the message is or will be. Effective marketing focuses on the areas of greatest interest to the target audience. The best marketing messages convey a relationship that supports those interests. Every business markets to build new or sustain existing business. Business with new and existing customers is predicated on relationships. Employing marketing messages that promote relationships can be the most powerful path to long term success.

Defining Relationships

In all marketing efforts the most important step is to define the target market. Knowing the target audience allows definition of the most important aspects of the relationship between service provider and customer. Understanding what the customers value in the relationship allows the business to focus on providing those core benefits and build communications that send the right message. The primary purpose of the relationship should be supported and enhanced through all forms of communication. A customer may be looking for safety and reliability. They may be an enthusiast or be interested in performance. Whatever the focus is ? marketing efforts that support that relationship will be the most successful.

Message Communication

Every interaction with a prospect or customer is a marketing opportunity. More specifically every time a person is exposed to a service or product a message is delivered. And every time a message is absorbed by a customer the idea of their place in the relationship is formed or reinforced. Advertisements and customer relationship support systems are direct efforts at establishing and maintaining business relationships. Other areas that customers receive messages are the appearance of the building, customer waiting room, signage, etc. Communications such as emails, phone calls, and in person conversations are also venues for relationship reinforcement. Documents such as estimates and invoices communicate the identity of the business and its relationship with customers. Company websites and social media such as Facebook also establish and support customer relationships. Every communication should support the basis of the relationship.

Monitoring the Message

Relationship marketing is based on understanding the primary objectives of the customer in engaging and continuing a relationship with a service provider. To ensure that the relationship message is communicated effectively all avenues of communication should be evaluated and modified if necessary. Marketing focused on relationships as opposed to marketing to stimulate sales transactions can be equated to putting the horse before the cart. Sales occur as a result of the relationship as opposed to the relationship being part of the sales transaction. Relationship marketing is a powerful factor in achieving long term success.

New simulation method produces realistic fluid movements

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? What does a yoghurt look like over time? The food industry will soon be able to answer this question using a new fluid simulation tool developed by the Department of Computer Science (DIKU) at the University of Copenhagen as part of a broad partnership with other research institutions. An epoch-making shift in the way we simulate the physical world is now a reality.

A five-year collaboration between the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Alexandra Institute on simulating fluids in movement is now bearing fruit, and has earned the group a 'best paper award' at the Symposium on Computer Animation (SCA).

"Our new method is a breakthrough which will radically change tomorrow's computer simulation. We have taken the first step towards producing a more precise simulation of fluid materials than anything seen so far. Now we are looking forward to testing the method on a number of other materials with soft structures," says Associate Professor Kenny Erleben from the University of Copenhagen.

Goodbye to statistical methods

The new fluid simulation tool can boast of being very similar to physical reality.

The method distinguishes itself significantly from known simulation methods which use mesh structures where the vertices are locked in a fixed position. In the new method, the mesh structure is replaced by a dynamic structure where the vertices move one at a time.

This makes it possible to take account of the fluid's physical properties more precisely and to see how different types of fluids interact with one another.

The method also ensures such a high degree of detail that even very thin structures become visible. With previous statistical methods, it is often a problem that the simulated object's edges and structures become blurred, and that its precise physical properties are hard to recreate.

Food risk assessments and shelf-life

The new dynamic simulation method paves the way for countless applications.

First, as the company backing the research, the food producer Danisco wants to use the method to simulate the shelf-life of foods, for example yoghurt.

However, the research can also be used to perform risk assessments of, for example, oil slips and within building design.

For Kenny Erleben, it will be interesting to use the method to simulate the human body, for example clothing, hair, skin and patterns of movement.

But for the time being, the method cannot be used by what has traditionally been simulation research's biggest customers: games developers. This is because the simulation is extremely time-consuming as the vertices are moved one at a time.

It often takes a couple of minutes per image just for the simulation -- added to which is the time it takes to generate the detailed images. Optimising the calculation times will therefore be one of the main focus areas in the ongoing research.
