STAR TREK Writers On Possibly Moving To STAR WARS; Josh ...

A few minor pieces Star Wars news for your reading pleasure. First up, in an interview with Wall Street Journal, screenwriter Alex Kurtzman plays down the possibility of his reteaming with Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams (and frequent co-writer Roberto Orci) on a future Wars installment. "I don?t think so. Obviously the God analogy applies there as well. But I think all of our slates are pretty full right now. I think we?re very happy with what we?ve done on ?Star Trek? and our heads have been there, you know? They haven?t really gone past that point. I think right now we?re mostly excited to sit there in the theater and be fans of the next ?Star Wars? movie. You don?t get that opportunity very often so I?m not sure we want to dilute it.)" This is similar to what Abrams stated when first asked if he would be up for directing 2015's Episode VII, but after their work on big franchises such as Star Trek, Transformers and Spider-Man, Kurtzman and Orci would be welcome additions to the Star Wars universe.

However, Into Darkness co-writer Damon Lindelof offers more optimism during a separate chat with Grantland. He says that he definitely won't be involved with Episode VII (which is currently being written by Toy Story 3 scribe Michael Arndt), but with the next several years offering many Star Wars films, he says that he will likely work on at least one of them down the road. "I?d say over the next decade, you and I are going to get five Star Wars films, and it won?t be Episode VII, but I may be involved in one of them when the pressure isn?t as intense." Would you like to see Lindelof, Roberto Orci and/or Alex Kurtzman work on a Star Wars film?

Finally, while speaking with E! Online, Josh Holloway (Lost, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) talked about working with Harrison "Han Solo" Ford on the upcoming thriller Paranoia, offering praise for the veteran actor. "He's great. I worked with him recently and had to arrest him and lock him up and shove him in car. I was like, 'I'm arresting Han Solo!" As he has been suggested for the role in the past (should a recast ever happen, of course), the actor also addressed the possibility of playing the iconic character in the future. "Matter of fact, I just did a movie where I almost tackled him [Ford]. I stuffed him in a car handcuffed. Yeah, sure, I would love that. It'd be a blast. I'd love to do that." While it hasn't been officially announced yet, Ford is heavily expected to reprise his role as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII alongside Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker and Carrie Fisher's Princess Leia. Would you like to see Josh Holloway be involved with the sci-fi franchise?

Doctors save Ohio boy by 'printing' an airway tube

In a medical first, doctors used plastic particles and a 3-D laser printer to create an airway splint to save the life of a baby boy who used to stop breathing nearly every day.

It's the latest advance from the booming field of regenerative medicine, making body parts in the lab.

In the case of Kaiba (KEYE'-buh) Gionfriddo, doctors didn't have a moment to spare. Because of a birth defect, the little Ohio boy's airway kept collapsing, causing his breathing to stop and often his heart, too. Doctors in Michigan had been researching artificial airway splints but had not implanted one in a patient yet.

In a single day, they "printed out" 100 tiny tubes, using computer-guided lasers to stack and fuse thin layers of plastic instead of paper and ink to form various shapes and sizes. The next day, with special permission from the Food and Drug Administration, they implanted one of these tubes in Kaiba, the first time this has been done.

Suddenly, a baby that doctors had said would probably not leave the hospital alive could breathe normally for the first time. He was 3 months old when the operation was done last year and is nearly 19 months old now. He is about to have his tracheotomy tube removed; it was placed when he was a couple months old and needed a breathing machine. And he has not had a single breathing crisis since coming home a year ago.

"He's a pretty healthy kid right now," said Dr. Glenn Green, a pediatric ear, nose and throat specialist at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where the operation was done. It's described in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

Independent experts praised the work and the potential for 3-D printing to create more body parts to solve unmet medical needs.

"It's the wave of the future," said Dr. Robert Weatherly, a pediatric specialist at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. "I'm impressed by what they were able to accomplish."

So far, only a few adults have had trachea, or windpipe transplants, usually to replace ones destroyed by cancer. The windpipes came from dead donors or were lab-made, sometimes using stem cells. Last month, a 2-year-old girl born without a windpipe received one grown from her own stem cells onto a plastic scaffold at a hospital in Peoria, Ill.

Kaiba had a different problem ? an incompletely formed bronchus, one of the two airways that branch off the windpipe like pant legs to the lungs. About 2,000 babies are born with such defects each year in the United States and most outgrow them by age 2 or 3, as more tissue develops.

In severe cases, parents learn of the defect when the child suddenly stops breathing and dies. That almost happened when Kaiba was 6 weeks old at a restaurant with his parents, April and Bryan Gionfriddo, who live in Youngstown, in northeast Ohio.

"He turned blue and stopped breathing on us," and his father did CPR to revive him, April Gionfriddo said.

More episodes followed, and Kaiba had to go on a breathing machine when he was 2 months old. Doctors told the couple his condition was grave.

"Quite a few of them said he had a good chance of not leaving the hospital alive. It was pretty scary," his mother said. "We pretty much prayed every night, hoping that he would pull through."

Then a doctor at Akron Children's Hospital, Marc Nelson, suggested the experimental work in Michigan. Researchers there were testing airway splints made from biodegradable polyester that is sometimes used to repair bone and cartilage.

Kaiba had the operation on Feb. 9, 2012. The splint was placed around his defective bronchus, which was stitched to the splint to keep it from collapsing. The splint has a slit along its length so it can expand and grow as the child does ? something a permanent, artificial implant could not do.

The plastic is designed to degrade and gradually be absorbed by the body over three years, as healthy tissue forms to replace it, said the biomedical engineer who led the work, Scott Hollister.

Green and Scott Hollister have a patent pending on the device and Hollister has a financial interest in a company that makes scaffolds for implants.

Dr. John Bent, a pediatric specialist at New York's Albert Einstein College of Medicine, said only time will tell if this proves to be a permanent solution, but he praised the researchers for persevering to develop it.

"I can think of a handful of children I have seen in the last two decades who suffered greatly ... that likely would have benefited from this technology," Bent said.

What was Cowell thinking with 'X Factor' hires?

TV

Paulina Rubio and Kelly Rowland are "The X Factor's" newest judges.

AP file

Paulina Rubio and Kelly Rowland are "The X Factor's" newest judges.

For the second year in a row, Simon Cowell found himself needing to replace two of the four judges on ?The X Factor.? And when the announcement finally came on Monday that Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio would take the spots L.A. Reid and Britney Spears left behind on the panel, the world reacted with a resounding ?Huh??

Neither star brings the buzz that most were expecting from the new hires. Kelly is best known for being in Destiny?s Child, while Paulina is a big name in Latin music and a ?who?s she?? everywhere else. These are really the women that Simon is turning to as he attempts to save ?X Factor? from premature cancellation? The ?Beauties and the Brit? slogan sounds like a great sitcom, but not a reality singing competition.

?Paulina and Kelly both have great taste and massive experience in the music industry and together with Demi, this is going to be a fun panel. It just feels like the time to do something different,? Simon said in the statement announcing the new hires.

?Time to do something different? indeed. ?The X Factor? joined the Fox schedule with high hopes and massive hype two years ago, and to the glee of Simon-haters across the world, that faded quicker than one of his t-shirts after being tossed in the dryer too many times. Since the early days of the American version of the British hit, when he was forced to replace Cheryl Cole and move Nicole Scherzinger from host to judge, nothing has gone right in Simon's effort to replicate the success he enjoyed with ?Idol.? It?s tough to see how these new additions will change anything.

Betting against big names
On the one hand, you can?t fault Simon for going away from the TMZ crowd. He spent a lot of cash last year on Britney and Demi Lovato, and viewers stayed away. ?American Idol? brought in Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj and still saw its ratings drop and the show get duller. So getting big, controversial celebrities isn't always the best idea.

But bringing in prominent names generates attention, and ?X Factor? desperately needs that. Always in the shadow of ?American Idol,? it?s far behind ?The Voice? and less fun than ?America?s Got Talent.? A decade ago people would turn on the TV just to watch Simon insult people, but that?s not true anymore. A five million dollar prize is gargantuan compared to ?Idol,? but no Powerball drawing.

Nor have its winners jumped to the top of the charts. Season one winner Melanie Amaro?s debut album still hasn?t been released. Tate Stevens, who won last season?s competition, hasn?t caught fire either. Without having produced a superstar, and without any prominent or controversial new faces on the panel, there isn?t any obvious reason for people to watch.

Better be good
Unless, that is, Kelly and Paulina are both really combative and entertaining as part of a panel. Simon?s placing a big bet that they are.

The two already know what it takes to judge a reality TV show. Kelly was a judge on the UK version of ?X Factor? in 2011, with her top act finishing in third place. Paulina has been a judge on ?La Voz Mexico? -- that country?s version of ?The Voice,? and will also be a coach on ?La Voz Kids.? She, at least, appears ready to fill a role as the fiery contrast to Simon?s Britishness, saying in her statement ?Simon, be careful what you wish for, let's see if you are ready to handle me, empieza la fiesta, amigo!?

That combativeness is what the show is going to need to succeed. If ?X Factor? is just another singing show with panelists saying nothing but nice things about the contestants and only gently teasing each other, there?s nothing to set it apart from the pack. The Kelly-Paulina-Demi trio has a lot of pressure on it to be fighters, both with each other and Simon, to get people talking about the show again. Odds are close to 100% that we?ll see that kind of sniping in the promotional material for the show once those initial commercials start to air.

?The X Factor's? a huge show in the United Kingdom, and American pop music fans can thank it for introducing the world to One Direction and Leona Lewis. But until it produces a singer of notice on the U.S. version of the show, Kelly and Paulina are going to have to provide an unexpected spark if the show hopes to avoid sinking further than the typical contestant?s career.

Here's the story ... of a 'Brady Bunch' reunion

TV

Who were those three familiar Seventies faces spotted at Cincinnati-area amusement park Kings Island on Sunday? Marcia, Marcia, Marcia? Well ... no. But close.

Susan Olsen (Cindy), Christopher Knight (Peter) and Barry Williams (Greg) ride The Racer rollercoaster at Kings Island with Kevin Brunck, manager of entertainment for the park. The actors were paying tribute to the 40th anniversary of the "Brady Bunch" episode shot at the park.

Three now-grown "Brady Bunch" kids returned to the Mason, Ohio park on Sunday, nearly 40 years after they filmed a classically campy 1973 episode there.

"The Kings Island episode is one of my favorite episodes from the Brady Bunch, right up there with the episode shot in Hawaii and the Return of Johnny Bravo," said Barry Williams, who played oldest brother Greg.

You remember the plot, such that it was. Architect dad Mike flew the fam from California to Ohio where his firm was building an addition to Kings Island, then only in its second year of existence. Typical Brady hijinx ensue, and somehow middle sister Jan ends up with Mike's blueprints and Mike unrolls Jan's Yogi Bear poster at his meeting. Sadly, the park honchos didn't seem enamored with the idea of a bear-shaped add-on, and Mike's klutzy kids had put his job in danger once again.

But never fear, it's Bradys to the rescue! The family sets off in a relay race across the park, with even beloved and exercise-averse maid Alice zooming off to find the plans and get them to Mike in time.

The episode became a cast and fan favorite with plenty of memorable moments. Jan's plaid pants! Greg falling for a park employee and agreeing to parade around dressed in an animal costume! Alice getting dizzy after swinging around in a giant beer barrel on a Tilt-A-Whirl type ride! Bobby and Cindy eating, and eating, and eating!

IMAGE: Barry Williams

Barry Williams teaches Kings Island patrons the patented Brady family choreography to "Sunshine Day."

Along with Williams, Susan Olsen, who played Cindy, and Christopher Knight, who played Peter, showed up to ride the rides and sign autographs. The cast members performed four sold-out shows for park visitors, with Williams singing his Eminem parody song, "The Real Greg Brady" and teaching the audience the choreography to that Brady musical classic, "Sunshine Day."

Williams told Cincinnati's ABC affiliate that the show's appeal is multigenerational. "It's really a treat to talk to people who watched us in first-run, there's a whole generation who watched us after school, and as you can see there's a whole upcoming generation watching on DVD," he said.

And Olsen told the station that the trip was a time warp. "We just assume our original roles -- not our character roles -- but our roles amongst each other," she said. "And we?re back to being kids."

BarbreAP

Lost in the question of whether the Seahawks face fines for future player suspensions is the reality that, based on the policy created by the NFL in 2008, they likely paid more than $60,000 for suspensions that happened in 2012.

The NFL has declined comment on the question of whether and to what extent the Seahawks have been fined for past suspensions, explaining that this information isn?t disclosed for any team.? But the league office has confirmed that the formula developed in 2008 still applies, and it?s public knowledge that three Seahawks were suspended during the 2012 season:? offensive lineman Allen Barbre, safety Winston Guy, and cornerback Brandon Browner.

Barbre came first, suspended the first four games of the season under the performance-enhancing drugs policy.? He was cut after the suspension ended in October.

Under the league?s policy, the Seahawks faced fines for the second suspension (Guy) and the third (Browner).? Based on their salaries for 2012, Guy lost $97,500 in salary during his four-week suspension.? The policy converts 25 percent of that into a fine, which equates to $24,375.

Next up was Browner, who served a four-game suspension and forfeited $109,411 in base salary.? Since Browner?s suspension was the third of the year, one third of his lost salary became a fine.? That?s $36,470.

The total of the two fines is $60,845.

This year, the Seahawks will be fined if there?s another suspension under the substance-abuse policy, the policy regarding steroids and related substances, or the personal-conduct policy, given that defensive end Bruce Irvin already will miss the first four games of the year after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

It?s unclear whether fines will make teams more careful about acquiring players who carry the red flag of a possible violations.? Former Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli said on Tuesday?s PFT Live that the league has discussed the possibility of stripping draft picks as an alternative to fines.

That could be the best way to handle the situation.? Team?s view fines as a cost of doing business; losing draft picks impacts competitive interests, and thus are more likely to get the franchise?s attention.

Yahoo's board has agreed to buy Tumblr for $1.1 billion cash. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has acquired several social media sites, presumably to attract a younger audience.

The Yahoo board has approved a deal to pay $1.1 billion for the blogging site Tumblr, according to The Wall Street Journal's All Things D.

Yahoo will pay for the blogging site in cash, All Things D reported. Yahoo nor Tumblr released official statements.

Tumblr's media team did not respond to repeated requests for comment. In a statement to NBC News, a Yahoo spokeswoman said Yahoo would not comment on "rumors or speculation."

Yahoo no doubt has something up its sleeve, as the company invited CNBC to a press event on Monday afternoon where it would "share something special." It is unclear whether that is related to a deal with Tumblr.

Also unclear is whether Tumblr has accepted Yahoo's reported offer.

Talk of a deal began circulating Friday, after All Things D reported that the two companies had been in talks for several weeks.

(Read More:Yahoo Eyeing Tumblr for $1 Billion?)

Since Marissa Mayer became CEO at Yahoo, the company has acquired several companies that appeal to younger audiences, including Summly, Astrid and Jybe. Yahoo has also been rumored to be eyeing Hulu.

Observers say Mayer is making these deals to attract a younger audience.

A 'mockumentary' chapter ends

As 'The Office' ends this May, a look back on how it influenced the TV comedy genre and what made it work.

By Laura Edwins / May 7, 2013

Steve Carell, ?The Office ?

NBC/AP

Just when Americans thought they had escaped their clueless bosses, dreadful cubicles, and weird co-workers, ?The Office? showed up in their living rooms. Nearly overnight the banality of workday routines, coffee breaks, and awkward office small talk became prime-time television. And it was hilarious.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Arguably the most successful adaptation of a British television program for an American audience, NBC?s ?The Office? ? which wraps up May 16 ? was groundbreaking in many ways. The show made comedian Steve Carell, as bumbling but lovable boss Michael Scott, a household name. It put actors John Krasinski and Jenna Fisher, and their office romance as Jim and Pam, on the map. And it elevated the art form of the ?mockumentary? ? in which actors break the third wall and reveal their innermost thoughts to the camera.

Over time, ?The Office? built an impressive cast and perfected its secret sauce with the aid of improv, webisodes, subplots, and inside jokes. At times, the writers were even cast as supporting characters.

But mostly ?The Office? will be remembered for its characters? confessionals as they tried to process and influence the bizarre chain of events constantly unfolding around them.

Jere Hester, pop culture columnist for NBC local integrated media and director of CUNY?s NYCity News Service, speculates that this mockumentary format, used in film since the 1950s and ?60s and influenced by the popularity of reality TV, did much to sophisticate sitcom audiences.

?If anything, [mockumentary] makes for stronger writing, and better storytelling,? he says. ?You?re confident you?re going to get the laughs without canned laughter serving as a cue.?

Though it has influenced other successful mockumentary sitcoms such as ?Modern Family? and ?Parks and Recreation,? Mr. Hester argues ?The Office? stands alone. It was the original example, he says, that taught viewers to expect more from comedy. ?It?s very possible [the final episode of ?The Office?] could be the end of an era.?

During its ninth and final season, ?The Office? pushed the bounds of the genre further than any other, introducing a member of the documentary crew as a character, and giving the mockumentary ? the show within the show ? a release date and a name: ?The Office: An American Workplace.? An episode in the final season even included a scene in which the characters watched themselves on promos for the ?documentary.? But to really push the genre to its fullest, NBC could actually release the mockumentary giving fans one last visit to the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company.

S&P 500 ends at record again; financials, Apple lead

By Caroline Valetkevitch

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 closed at another record high, pushing further above 1,600 as financial shares led the way after Bank of America's settlement with MBIA.

Apple's advance helped lift both the S&P and the Nasdaq.

Bank of America said it would settle claims with MBIA for $1.6 billion, lifting shares of both companies as well as the S&P financial sector Index, which gained 1 percent. MBIA shares jumped 45.4 percent to $14.29 and Bank of America shares rose 5.2 percent to $12.88.

Apple shares were also among the top gainers after Barclays raised its price target on the stock. Apple shares shot up 2.4 percent to $460.71, leading both the Nasdaq composite index and the benchmark S&P 500 higher.

The day's gains followed a strong run in stocks since the start of the year. Supportive monetary policies that have kept interest rates low as well as solid earnings have helped to keep the market up. The S&P 500 has gained 13.4 percent since December 31.

"As long as you continue to have decent earnings reports and the support from central banks around the world providing liquidity, it's going to be hard to derail this market, at least in the short term," said Michael James, managing director of equity trading at Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles.

The Dow Jones industrial average dipped 5.07 points, or 0.03 percent, to 14,968.89 at the close. But the Standard & Poor's 500 Index inched up 3.08 points, or 0.19 percent, to finish at a record 1,617.50. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 14.34 points, or 0.42 percent, to close at 3,392.97.

During the session, the S&P 500 also reached an all-time intraday high of 1,619.77.

Although weak economic data from the euro zone and China has caused concerns over the global growth outlook, Friday's stronger-than-expected U.S. payrolls report fueled the gains that drove both the Dow and the S&P 500 to record levels.

Warren Buffett said on Monday that low interest rates have made bonds "terrible" investments, but stocks are "reasonably priced," and he continues to shy away from sectors such as media, where he cannot predict which will thrive in the long run.

But some analysts suspect the rally has little strength to keep going on.

The market "is discounting a tremendous amount of good news now, which I don't think is going to be substantiated, and I don't think it's allowing for any possibilty of bad news," said Uri Landesman, president of Platinum Partners in New York.

Earnings have been mostly higher than expected, with 68.5 percent of companies surpassing estimates so far. At the same time, second-quarter estimates have fallen as outlooks remain more negative than positive.

Among Monday's reports, Tyson Foods Inc posted a weaker-than-expected quarterly profit and cut its full-year sales forecast. Its shares declined 3.3 percent to $24.10.

In contrast, Humana Inc jumped 2.1 percent to $75.49 as one of the S&P 500's biggest percentage gainers. JPMorgan upgraded the stock to "overweight."

But Johnson & Johnson shares slid 1.3 percent to $84.68, weighing on the blue-chip Dow average.

GM's stock also declined. The U.S. Treasury said it will begin another round of sales of General Motors stock acquired during the government's bailout of the auto sector.

Soccer referee punched by player in Utah dies

(AP) ? A 46-year-old soccer referee who was punched by a teenage player during a game and later slipped into a coma has died, police said.

Ricardo Portillo of Salt Lake City passed away at the hospital, where he was being treated following the assault last weekend, Unified police spokesman Justin Hoyal said Saturday night.

Police have accused a 17-year-old player in a recreational soccer league of punching Portillo after the man called a foul on him and issued him a yellow card.

"The suspect was close to Portillo and punched him once in the face as a result of the call," Hoyal said in a press release.

The teen, whose name hasn't been released because of his age, has been booked into juvenile detention on suspicion of aggravated assault.

Hoyal said authorities will consider additional charges since Portillo has died.

He said an autopsy is planned. No cause of death was released.

Portillo suffered swelling in his brain and had been listed in critical condition, Dr. Shawn Smith said Thursday at the Intermountain Medical Center in the Salt Lake City suburb of Murray.

The victim's family, which publicly spoke of Portillo's plight this past week, has asked for privacy, Hoyal said.

Johana Portillo, 26, said last week that she wasn't at the April 27 game in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville, but she said she's been told by witnesses and detectives that the player hit her father in the side of the head.

"When he was writing down his notes, he just came out of nowhere and punched him," she said.

Accounts from a police report, Portillo's daughter and others further detail what occurred.

The teenager was playing goalie during a game at Eisenhower Junior High School in Taylorsville when Ricardo Portillo issued him a yellow card for pushing an opposing forward trying to score a goal. In soccer, a yellow card is given as a warning to a player for an egregious violation of the rules. Two yellow cards lead to a red card and expulsion from the game.

The teenager, quite a bit heavier than Portillo, began arguing with the referee, then unleashed a punch to his face. Portillo seemed fine at first, then asked to be held because he felt dizzy. He sat down and started vomiting blood, triggering his friend to call an ambulance.

When police arrived around noon, the teenager was gone and Portillo was laying on the ground in the fetal position. Through translators, Portillo told EMTs that his face and back hurt and he felt nauseous. He had no visible injuries and remained conscious. He was considered to be in fair condition when they took him to the Intermountain Medical Center.

But when Portillo arrived to the hospital, he slipped into a coma with swelling in his brain. Johana Portillo called detectives to let them know his condition had worsened.

That's when detectives intensified their search for the goalie. By Saturday evening, the teenager's father agreed to bring him down to speak with police.

Portillo's family said he had been attacked before, and Johanna Portillo said she and her sisters begged their father to stop refereeing because of the risk from angry players, but he continued because he loved soccer.

"It was his passion," she said. "We could not tell him no."

By Serena Gordon
HealthDay Reporter

SUNDAY, May 5 (HealthDay News) ? Significantly more U.S. children have a neurodevelopmental or mental health disability than did a decade ago, according to new research.

Disabilities that impair a child?s day-to-day living have risen 16 percent, with the greatest increase seen in richer families, according to the study. Conditions such as autism or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder appear to lie behind the increase, experts said.

But the surveys of parents in 2001-?02 and 2009-?10 also revealed some good news: The rate of disability due to physical conditions went down, according to the study, which is scheduled for presentation Sunday at the Pediatric Academic Societies? annual meeting in Washington D.C. Data and conclusions presented at meetings are typically considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

?This may mean there are differences in people getting early access to care,? said study lead author Dr. Amy Houtrow, vice chairwoman of pediatric rehabilitation medicine at Children?s Hospital of Pittsburgh. For example, medications for children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, a potentially debilitating inflammatory arthritis, have improved significantly in recent years, she said.

?For some conditions, it may be that medical care has improved so much that children may have a diagnosis but not a disability,? she said, adding that this particular example is from what she has seen in her practice, not from the study data.

For the study, Houtrow and colleagues reviewed data from two National Health Interview Surveys conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). They included more than 102,000 parents of children from infancy through 17 years of age.

Parents were asked if their children had any limitations in play or activity, received special education services, needed help with personal care, had difficulty walking without supports, had trouble with memory or had any other limitation.

?It?s not enough to just have something like ADHD,? she said. ?You have to be limited somehow by that diagnosis.?

The researchers found that nearly 6 million children were considered disabled at the end of the study. Children living in poverty had the highest rates of disability, although poor children didn?t experience the largest increases in the incidence of disability during the study period.

Families with incomes 300 percent above the federal poverty level ? around $66,000 for a family of four ? had a 28 percent increase in children with disabilities. Families whose income levels exceeded the poverty level by 400 percent ? about $88,000 ? saw a 24 percent increase in the number of children with disabilities.

Houtrow said it wasn?t clear exactly why this was the case, and the researchers suspect increases in neurodevelopmental disorders may be behind the rise.

In children under 6 years old, the trend was most evident, with almost double the rate of neurodevelopmental disorders ? 36 cases per 1,000 children up from 19 a decade earlier.

The increased prevalence of autism spectrum disorders is likely one of the explanations, said Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children?s Medical Center of New York, in New Hyde Park.

Autism spectrum disorders involve impaired communication, social interactions and repetitive behaviors, and can range from mild, as in Asperger?s syndrome, to full-blown autism. The CDC estimates that one in 88 children now has a form of autism.

?Even though the study found some differences in disability rates for different socioeconomic status, I would urge any parent who has a concern about their children to discuss it with their child?s pediatrician,? Adesman said.

Houtrow agreed.

?The condition your child has matters, and how they function in their regular life matters,? she said. ?If they?re having trouble doing things that other children do, reach out to health professionals or to community resources to optimize your child?s life. We can help children adapt or get accommodations for them.?

Houtrow said the overall rise in neurodevelopmental disorders suggests that there may be changes in what is considered socially acceptable.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says he won't comment on an Israeli airstrike against Syria that targeted a shipment of advanced missiles believed to be headed for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Israeli officials on Saturday confirmed the strike, which took place early Friday.

Obama told the Spanish-language network Telemundo in an interview that he will defer to the Israeli government for comment. He also repeated his view that the Israelis justifiably have to guard against the transfer of advanced weapons to organizations like Hezbollah. The U.S. considers Hezbollah a terrorist organization.

Obama conducted the interview Saturday, and a portion of the president's answer to a question about the airstrike was broadcast on MSNBC.

RolePlayGateway?

Hello there,

I'm looking for the idea, the partner or even the players, to start a roleplay!

But first, let me introduce myself. My pseudonym is Minion, I'm 17 years old and I unfortunately have a runaway imagination which craves some sort of stimulation. Thus I have come here.
I like roleplaying, I've been doing it for most of my childhood and well into my teenage life too. It's quite hard to suppress the habit.

Most themes and roleplaying styles fall into my taste, though as of lately I've started resenting romance and supernatural romance, as it brings unbalance to the comicbook store I frequent and as such, the genre sticks out like a sore thumb when I try finding good books.

A pair of ideas I find to be dear to me are the following;

The Third World War - Many a novel has been written, but my ultimate favourite is "Two Suns Rose" by Niels E. Nielsen. The story of a colonel from the NATO, who's been sent over the Russian steppes after the third world war broke out in 1973. After destroying city upon city, he finds himself stranded in Tienshan, more than 7000 kilometers from home, and his journey home must begin, so that he may see his family again.
This story can be played in two ways. Either when going to war, where people can play as members of the 21st Tactical Missile Brigade, or as a journey back to Europe through the wartorn steppes of Communist Russia and the ruins of former Europe.
Climate change, hunger, mania/fear and loneliness would be dominating themes in this kind of roleplay.

You're always Right if you're Left! - Inspired by many books and series about intrigues in the political world. A player has just been elected president, and senators, PMs and important leaders come to the parliament and to the presidential resident to do business with the president and his party.
This roleplay leaves for many interesting choices and epic story lines. Who wouldn't want to do another Clinton? Who wouldn't go on a smear campaign to defame the opposition?
Intrigue, personal beliefs and peer pressure is what will dominate this kind of game.

La Carosello - Inspired by a rather new game; Bioshock Infinite and by several short stories on the idea of a time paradox, this roleplay would be about just that. A flaw in logic and in time and space. Something done so awfully wrong that the event must repeat until the knot is untied.
History repeats itself. The actors are new every time, but the play is as old as time. An even will repeat itself, sometimes in a different setting, sometimes with new people. But the crucial is, that the outcome always is the same, until the circle is broken and the events course can unfold.

So if you find these interesting, then we would probably be well off. But if you've got that particular storyline you wish for or possibly even hunger for, the fear not!
As I stated I am open to almost anything! As long as the werewolves and vampires are left out of the picture. Pirates, high fantasy or mafiosi. As long as there's a possibility that I get to write.

Investing 101: Learning to Trade and Invest in an ... - Yahoo! Finance

For anyone over 30 the amount of information available online is overwhelming. Access to analyst research once required opening a brokerage account or having a well-placed source for leaks. Rumors were slowly disseminated and all but impossible to fact check. Flash crashes took days to develop.

For teenagers like actress and editor of FoxonStocks.com Rachel Fox, when information is anything less than immediate, it is glacial. Her generation is built for speed in an age where the only filters are those on Instagram ("Insty").

All she has to do now is figure out which of the infinite sites are value adding. In the attached clip, Fox shares three places she goes to help guide her as she teaches herself to invest and trade.

[NOTE: The below sites have extensive free offerings. They also provide pay services. Neither Yahoo Finance nor the author are endorsing, recommending or reviewing any of the pay services. Caveat emptor.]

1. FreeOnlineTradingEducation.com

The URL is a mouthful, but Fox says the site is a must for those trying to grasp the often impenetrable jargon and the patterns of technical analysis. "Everybody who wants to know about technical analysis or wants to learn about the charts and trends" can get the basics there.

2. StockCharts.com

StockCharts.com is where she puts her charting to work to "customize any kind of chartistry that you want to look at." Make a chart, see what's hot with the community and get opinions from experts ? Fox finds value in all of it.

3. EarningsWhisper.com

Fox gets her earnings calendar and unofficial estimates from this trading suggestion site that purports to give "professional earnings expectations."

All of the above sites are how Fox is teaching herself about trading. Not investing. For the long haul, real money is made over the years through a combination of understanding trading basics and a mastery of old-school fundamentals.

For learning fundamental investing there is one site I can enthusiastically recommend to investors of every experience level. It's free and has more than 30 years of wisdom available for the asking. The site is BerkshireHathaway.com. It's like serving Brussels sprouts in a world filled with Pixie Stix, but most investors would be well served to skip a journey to the "Woodstock of Investing" and spend the weekend pouring over letters from the most successful speculator in the world.

If I knew then what I know now, Warren's world is where I'd start learning about investing.
