Apple launches iTunes Store in 12 new Asia markets

Apple launched its iTunes Store in 12 Asian markets on Wednesday, giving consumers access to millions of songs and movies, but regional giants China, India and Indonesia were not on the list.

The move by California-based Apple, which has sold more than 16 billion songs worldwide on the online store, enables it to make more money from digital content in markets where its devices have become hugely popular.

Asian musicians would also benefit from having a secure new platform to sell their work to local fans in a region rife with intellectual piracy.

"What took them so long?" said Chen Wei Li, a 28-year-old Singaporean who owns an iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro laptop.

"I personally am looking to download some music off the iTunes store," he added.

The iTunes Store is now open to consumers with credit cards issued in Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

It was already available in Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Customers will now be able to choose from more than 28 million songs, including hits by Asian stars.

They will also be able to rent or buy movies from studios such as 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Universal, Disney and Warner Brothers.

"We know that people will pay for content if they are able to access good services," said Jasper Donat, the Hong Kong-based president of Music Matters, an annual gathering of executives from the music industry in the Asia-Pacific region.

"Having promoted the Asian music industry around the world for nearly eight years, we are genuinely excited about today's iTunes announcement and look forward to welcoming more digital entertainment platforms and services to the region soon."

But China, India and Indonesia -- the three most populous Asian countries -- were notable omissions from Wednesday's launch.

"We're always working to bring the iTunes Store to more customers around the world, as conditions permit," Apple said in a written reply to AFP when asked why China and India, which have a combined population of 2.5 billion, were not yet included.

Neha Dharia, a Mumbai-based analyst with business research firm Ovum, said several criteria including support for intellectual property rights are considered by Apple before opening up the iTunes Store to any market.

"These include the adoption of Apple devices, consumer preferences for digital distribution of content, ability to forge partnerships for procuring local content and, of course, levels of piracy and the measures to combat it," Dharia told AFP.

Apple's Asian expansion, which followed the December launch of the iTunes Store in Brazil and 15 other Latin American markets, now makes commercial sense despite concerns over piracy, another analyst said.

"Up to a certain point, piracy in the whole region was something they were looking at with a critical eye," said Melissa Chau, a Singapore-based regional research manager with US market intelligence firm IDC.

"But what has changed in the last couple of years was how popular iPads and iPhones have become in this region.

"It makes sense for them to capture revenues from these users who have iPads and iPhones."

Apple is estimated to have shipped 35 million iPhones and iPads in the Asia-Pacific region excluding Japan in 2011, Chau said.

"This is the natural evolution of an integrated ecosystem for their own products and services," said Chau.

Apple's latest earnings report showed it made a profit of $11.6 billion on revenues of $39.2 billion in the March quarter, thanks largely to booming demand for iPhones and iPads in Asia including China.

According to a LinkedIn blog post, Twitter is dropping a two-and-a-half-year-old partnership with LinkedIn that allowed users of the professional social network to publish tweets to their LinkedIn profiles.

Twitter consumer product chief Michael Sippey wrote in a post on Twitter's developer blog that the changes were part of a move to deliver a "core Twitter consumption experience through a consistent set of products and tools."?

Twitter has been gradually moving to push out partners who display tweets on their websites, but those efforts have been primarily focused on mobile clients, where Twitter's been emphasizing its own offerings.

Users will still be able to post updates on LinkedIn and broadcast those updates to Twitter, but content-sharing won't go the other way.

That matches Twitter's general strategy of late: It is happy to have others send content into Twitter, but not so happy to have others use tweets as content elsewhere.

What's bizarre, though, is that Twitter just upgraded its own Facebook app, which crossposts tweets to users' Facebook profiles?exactly what LinkedIn has been doing, with Twitter's blessing, since 2009.

Twitter has long struggled with enforcing a consistent set of rules and practices for partners like LinkedIn. Developers who created apps for viewing tweets, for example, have found themselves placed at a disadvantage by changes to Twitter's rules and Twitter's efforts to develop its own mobile clients.

Abstract: A series of novel 1-(4-substitutedbenzoyl)-4-(4-chlorobenzhydryl)piperazine derivatives 5a?g was designed by a nucleophilic substitution reaction of 1-(4-chlorobenzhydryl)piperazine with various benzoyl chlorides and characterized by elemental analyses, IR and ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. Cytotoxicity of the compounds was demonstrated on cancer cell lines from liver (HUH7, FOCUS, MAHLAVU, HEPG2, HEP3B), breast (MCF7, BT20, T47D, CAMA-1), colon (HCT-116), gastric (KATO-3) and endometrial (MFE-296) cancer cell lines. Time-dependent cytotoxicity analysis of compound 5a indicated the long-term in situ stability of this compound. All compounds showed significant cell growth inhibitory activity on the selected cancer cell lines.

Acquisition Of ITA Software By Google Could Pose A Threat

In July 2010, Google announced an agreement to acquire ITA Software. ITA licenses its airfare search and pricing software to Kayak under an agreement which expires in December 2013. The faring software accounts for 42% of Kayak?s overall airfare query results and airline travel queries account for 85% of total searches performed on Kayak?s websites and mobile applications.

With the regulatory approval of the acquisition in April 2011, Google can create its own flight search tool which enables people to find comparable flight information on the Internet without using Kayak?s services.

Alternatively, Google may not renew ITA?s current agreements with the online travel agencies such as Kayak, or do so at unfavorable terms. Kayak admits that it is unable to replace ITA with a comparable technology. Hence a loss of access to ITA?s software could have a significant adverse impact of the comprehensiveness of query results and, consequently, on the revenues and operating margins of Kayak.

Rising Internet Penetration To Benefit Online Travel Agencies & Portals Like Kayak

Given the increasing worldwide online penetration, the Internet has become an integral part of the overall travel planning process as it enables travelers to refine searches, compare destinations and view real-time pricing.

According to PhoCusWright?s Global Online Travel Overview (April 2011), the global online leisure and unmanaged business travel segment is expected to grow twice as fast as the total global travel market, with gross booking in the online segment expected to surpass $300 billion globally in 2012.

Global Internet penetration is currently estimated at 29% (77% in North America, 58% in Europe, 35% in Latin America and 21% in Asia). With rising affluence in emerging economies of South Asia and increased adoption of Internet and e-commerce, the proportion of travel bookings over the Internet is expected to rise in the future. Expansion In Hotel Markets in Europe and Asia To Provide An Added Opportunity

The hotel markets in Europe and Asia are much more fragmented with smaller, independent lodgings compared to the U.S., where the hotel market is dominated by large hotel chains. Large hotel chains are more likely to offer online bookings through their own websites while online travel agencies are more appealing to small, independent hotels outside the U.S. Additionally, travel agencies stand to make higher revenue margins from independent budget hotels under their merchant business model. Hence, expansion into hotels markets in Asia and Eastern Europe presents a growth opportunity for online travel services providers.

Hotel bookings offer markedly higher revenue margin (revenue earned by the travel service provider as a percentage of the size of the booking) at close to 25% compared to air ticket bookings (~3%) and cruises and car rentals (less than 10%). Increase in Online Advertising Spend

With growing economic stability, the global travel market is bound to witness an increase in the years ahead. We therefore believe that travel providers and travel related advertisers will continue to devote significant resources to advertise their travel products and services. With the projected growth in online advertising market, an increasing amount of travel advertising spending is expected to migrate from traditional offline advertising channels to online advertising opportunities.

IDC estimates that the annual expenditures for global online travel advertising was over $5 billion in 2011 and forecasts the same to grow at a compound annual rate of 15% through 2014. Since Kayak derives over 50% of its value from advertising, we feel the trend will do well for the company?s future valuation.

On the flip side, traffic obtained through online advertising has increased as a percentage of total demand since the same consumer visits several websites before making a purchase. This increased shopping behavior has reduced advertising efficiency and effectiveness as traffic obtained through online advertising becomes less likely to result in purchase on the web site. Therefore, online advertising expenses have increased at a faster rate than gross profit, a trend which is expected to continue.

We estimate Kayak?s eqity value price to be worth $850 million, or approximately $25.16 based on our current estimated share count.

Emily Maynard-Chris Harrison Romance Alleged By Tabloid, Vienna Girardi

The Bachelorette star Emily Maynard has four sexy suitors left, but the true object affection is newly-single host Chris Harrison, a tabloid hilariously claims.

Star cites "insiders" involved with the hit ABC reality show talking about how close the pair have become, with some even saying they are "madly in love."

While this revelation is new, the "electric attraction" has caused sparks to fly from the beginning, even before Chris and wife Gwen split up this spring.

"Chris openly told staffers that Emily was the most beautiful woman he'd ever laid eyes on," said an insider, who apparently wasn't alone in noticing.

Even former contestants were aware of the potential there.

"From the beginning, I always said there was no way Emily was really going to end up with one of the guys," says former Bachelor winner Vienna Girardi.

Google unveils Nexus 7 tablet and Nexus Q entertainment device

SAN FRANCISCO ? Google isn't just flirting with consumer electronics anymore, it's diving headlong into it.

With the kind of dramatics that are becoming a familiar fixture of technology industry confabs, Google Inc. unveiled a new tablet and a home entertainment device, and even hired sky divers to swoop down from a blimp to showcase futuristic, Internet-connected eyeglasses.

Whereas the glasses are in the experimental phase, Google's duo of new Nexus gadgets are ready for prime time, and the company is hoping they will land in the center of consumers' digital lives. The new tablet and entertainment unit are built to talk to each other, enabling Google customers to buy movies and music, play games and grab online information whether Web surfing on the couch or on the move.

Google has long been a dominant player in Internet search and online email, and has largely stayed away from manufacturing its own hardware products. But analysts say the company now wants to remake itself as a lifestyle and culture purveyor in order to compete with Apple andAmazon.com Inc.

"It's clear Google understands that the algorithmic approach to their business is not good enough for the next stage," said Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey, referring to Google's mathematical formula for ranking search results. "They have to make people feel like it is a company that's warm and inviting and lets you curl up with a book or watch TV."

Google has a strong foothold for beginning that transformation, with nearly 400 million smartphones and tablets running its Android software around the globe, outselling Apple phones by nearly 3 to 1 in the first quarter of 2012.

Most of those sales, however, have come from Google allies such as Samsung Electronics Co. andHTC Corp. But with the devices unveiled Wednesday, as well as the finalization of its purchase of phone maker Motorola Mobility in May, Google seems poised to take more control of the Android software it created.

Its new $199 tablet, called the Nexus 7, is priced the same as Amazon's KindleFiretablet, a device that debuted last year and stole a chunk of the tablet market from Apple's dominant iPad. Although the Kindle Fire didn't dethrone the $500 iPad, analysts believe its initial success showed that consumers were eager for a less-expensive alternative, and it's that niche that Google is gunning for.

With a high-resolution screen and a fast processor designed for video gaming and movie viewing, the Nexus 7 will have a newly enlarged lineup of magazines, TV shows and films for rent. It will begin shipping to customers next month.

Google also showed off a curious spherical gadget called the Nexus Q, which it dubbed a "social streaming device." The $300 Nexus Q, which would sit alongside the television, is meant to take on set-top boxes such as the Apple TV, Boxee and Roku. It will be able to access and play video and music purchased on a Google smartphone or tablet.

But Google has had abortive attempts to remake television before, most recently with its failed bid to sell Google TV boxes. It wasn't clear to observers that the Nexus Q improved much on the $99 Apple TV.

"The Q is an Apple TV made into a sphere," McQuivey said.

The company received some applause in a demonstration of its Android phone software, which it called Jelly Bean. Among the software's new features is a service that keeps track of what the smartphone user is doing at that moment and pipes up regularly with information that could help with the task at hand. Departing from your house could pop up traffic information and arriving at a restaurant could automatically yield a list of the best dishes.

But it was the sky-diving stunt, arranged by Google co-founder Sergey Brin, that managed to wow the crowd of software developers gathered for the event. The audience watched a set of images recorded and transmitted from the sky divers' glasses as they leaped from a blimp hovering above San Francisco's Moscone Center. The trick required Google to get special permission from the Federal Aviation Administration, the mayor's office and NASA.

Google's specs ? which it calls its Glass project ? are a nascent technology that the company hopes will eventually enable people to access and record information about the world they're seeing without a hand-held device. Brin told developers that they would soon be able to buy a pair of the prototype specs for $1,500 and begin creating applications for them. The glasses would be available to the general public "less than a year" after that, he said.

"This is a really new technology that we really want to get in the hands of passionate people as early as possible."

The All-Purpose Writer ? The Brimmer Files

On Tuesday night I e-mailed the link to Siobhan Hunter?s review of Last Summer at the Marmont to the author of Q, knowing he would particularly enjoy it since he lived at the Chateau Marmont for a spell during the 1970s when he was a Hollywood screenwriter and script doctor. In the e-mail I also apologized for not meeting the self-imposed deadline of June 16 for the new draft of the screenplay adaptation of his novel. He wrote back Wednesday morning:

What a perceptive, well written review. I look forward to reading the play.

Don?t worry about ["Q"]. Take your time. I?m in my own delays as well with this weird deconstructed fiction-memoir or whatever it is.

The most important things are your health and putting coin on the table.

I was glad he told me not to worry because I?ve been doing a lot of that lately. In the last few weeks severe arthritic pain in my hands has prevented me from getting much writing done but it has resulted in a lot of thinking about writing, One thing I had been kicking my ass over a lot lately is why I have not been as productive in the short fiction market as I was between 2004-2010, starting with work for L.A. Stories. And what I?ve come to realize is that, as a writer, short fiction and flash fiction was a growing ?phase? I was going through and I burned through it, having met all of the challenges that I set for myself and, seeing no further challenges to the form, I moved on. Much as I did with my Martin Brimmer phase, and the time I spent penning personal ruminative essays for the likes of Dead Drunk Dublin and Strike the Root.

Last week an organization ? I hate to be vague there but the situation calls for it ? conducted a conference call with many of its members to consider bringing me into their circle of secrecy for an investigative journalism piece; one member warned that the group did not have a good track record with journalists, at which point another chimed in and said, ?I?ve done some research on this guy. He?s not just a journalist. He?s a writer.?

Which is what I am. An all-purpose writer. I go where the money and my interest is. This time last year my interest was in radio plays ? an antiquated form, I know, but also one I know that I can master so I?m going to meet the challenge ? and I will get back to that as soon as I am able to finish the screenplay for ?Q?, not only another personal challenge but a pet project of mine for, literally, decades.

And, in the interim, there?s the journalism project to pursue, the type of project that often falls into my lap unsolicited as a result of being an ?all-purpose writer? and not one who easily fits into a niche. My protagonist from Last Summer at the Marmont, Lewis Hogue, explains some of the exhaustive wheeling and dealing that goes into the business during a phone call early in the first act:

LEWIS (INTO PHONE)

I just bought the life story rights of a certain fringe celebrity who?s been?in the limelight a bit recently ? Who? Well, he?s the former gay lover of a big time movie star who shall remain nameless ?

(It?s impossible for LEWIS to stand still now. He is circling the room like a buzzard, cell phone glued to his ear, as he talks.)

LEWIS (INTO PHONE) (CONT?D)

Yeah, that?s him. I didn?t know you read the Enquirer.?(laughs) Listen, this is no joke. The guy has led an interesting life and it would make a great TV movie. He?s more than just a peter puffer to Mr. Boffo Box Office. For one thing, he used to run drugs for Eddie Nash back in the Eighties, turned state?s evidence against Nash, went into the Witness Protection Program and ? Huh? ? What? ? Yeah, I engineered an exclusive to the Enquirer, which netted me five grand, I don?t mind saying, and I managed to get an eight week embargo on the story down to four so I want to strike while the fire?s hot, so to speak. Or is that anvil? ? Huh? ? No, I was just wondering out loud. Is it strike while the fire is hot or while the anvil is hot? Anvil would make more sense, I think.

(LEWIS reacts to a demure knock at the door.)

LEWIS (INTO PHONE) (CONT?D)?When? ? Hold on, let me check my schedule ?

(He retrieves a Day Runner from the bed, paws through the pages)

LEWIS (INTO PHONE) (CONT?D)?Tuesday at one at The Ivy. Yeah, I think I can swing that.

(He closes the Day Runner without making a notation.)

LEWIS (INTO PHONE) (CONT?D) I?ll see you then. And I?ll bring along the contract so you can see it?s all on the level. This could really be something.

(Another knock at the door. A visibly annoyed LEWIS walks to the door while still talking on the cell.

LEWIS (INTO PHONE) (CONT?D) ?No, it was a dollar option?just to keep it all legal, you understand?but this guy can?t sneeze without me owning the snot that comes out of his nose. I?m not gonna make the same mistake I did with Jason Miller. If I?d had the rights to that goddamn play sewn up, Sorvino wouldn?t have beaten me to the punch.

We wanted an event that would test a broad range of skills, one that had things that we rarely do, and some that are just fun. Some are pure strength (seated barbell press) but not often trained. Others are a test of will (max distance prowler) and some are just a big fat surprise (triple jump)
