Tsunami hits Hawaii after Canada earthquake; first waves smaller than initially feared

HONOLULU (Reuters) - At least 100,000 people in Hawaii were ordered to move from the shoreline to higher ground late on Saturday after a tsunami warning, but the first waves were less forceful than had been feared and no damage was initially reported.

The tsunami, triggered by a powerful earthquake off Canada's Pacific coast, began shortly after 10:30 p.m. Hawaii time, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, as motorists clogged roadways in a mass exodus from low-lying areas.

"The tsunami arrived about when we expected it should," Senior Geophysicist Gerard Fryer told reporters at a news conference, saying: "I was expecting it to be a little bigger."

The height of the first surge initially was put at 3 feet, but the warning center subsequently reported that early tsunami wave activity peaked at just 2.5 feet at the island of Maui.

There were no immediate reports of serious flooding or damage, but officials warned that additional waves were still possible and that wave heights of up to 6 feet could be reached in some places.

Following the initial surge, Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle said it was unclear if the worst had yet passed.

"All of these events are capricious, and you can't really tell which wave is going to be packing the most punch, and sometimes it's the second, third or even the very last one," he told CNN, adding that it might be several hours before officials could give the all-clear and cancel the evacuation.

Tsunami warning sirens in the islands were activated on short notice due to initial confusion among scientists about the quake's undersea epicenter and the extent of the tsunami threat posted by the temblor.

Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle announced that all police and emergency personnel were being pulled out from potential flood zones shortly before the first wave, leaving anyone defying evacuation orders to fend for themselves. He urged motorists who remained caught in harm's way due to gridlocked roads to abandon their vehicles and proceed on foot.

"If you are stuck in traffic, you might consider getting out of your car and consider walking to higher ground. You will have to assess your own situation, depending on where you are right now. Right now it is critical," he said

Vindell Hsu, a geophysicist at the Tsunami Warning Center said an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 people who live in Hawaii's coastal zones had been urged to move to higher ground until after 10:30 p.m.

Governor Neil Abercrombie issued an emergency proclamation for the state.

The tsunami center cautioned that wave height could not be predicted and that the first wave "may not be the largest".

It said: "All shores are at risk no matter which direction they face".

CANADA QUAKE

The warnings followed a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 that hit Canada's Pacific coastal province of British Columbia late on Saturday [ID:nL1E8LS03H].

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 123 miles south-southwest of Prince Rupert at a depth of 6.2 miles.

The Earthquakes Canada agency said the quake was followed by numerous aftershocks as large as magnitude 4.6 and that a small tsunami has been recorded by a deep-ocean pressure sensor.

On Oahu, Hawaii's most populous island, tsunami warning sirens could be heard blaring out across Honolulu, the state capital, prompting an immediate crush of traffic, with many motorists stopping at service stations to top up with gasoline. At movie theaters, films were halted in mid-screening as announcements were made urging patrons to return to their homes.

The last time Oahu had a tsunami warning was after the devastating Japanese earthquake of March 2011.

On Honolulu's famed Waikiki Beach, residents of high-rise buildings were told to move to the third floor or higher for safety.

Stephany Sofos, a resident of Diamond Head near Waikiki, said most people had either evacuated or relocated to a higher floor.

"I moved my car up the hill, packed up my computer and have my animals all packed and with me," Sofos said, saying that she had not yet seen any obvious receding of the surf, a telltale sign that a tsunami wave is imminent.

"I'm pretty confident because we have a lot of reefs out there and that will prevent any major damage. Maybe it's a false confidence, but I'm not really worried," she said, adding, "It is nerve-wracking."

Tsunami Warning Center Geophysicist Gerard Fryer said the tsunami had caught scientists by surprise.

"We thought that the earthquake was on land and when we learned that it was deeper undersea and we gathered more information, we had no choice but to issue a warning," he said

As residents scrambled to reach higher ground on Oahu, at least four major road accidents were reported by the state Emergency Medical Services. More accidents were also reported on the outer islands.

A tsunami advisory was also posted for coastal areas of northern California and Oregon, where a maximum sea level rise was estimated at 6 inches, the National Weather Service said. The agency said no significant flooding was expected.

Gay Hate Crime Acquittal In Kentucky Throws Fuel On Hate Crime ...

Over the past 10 years, as gay rights advocates have pushed the government to take steps to protect gay people from hate crimes, those arguing for and against such laws have observed that hate crime cases are exceptionally difficult to prosecute. This week, a ruling in the first-ever federal prosecution of a hate crime motivated by anti-gay bias threw still more fuel onto the long-simmering debate.

At first glance, the facts of the case may seem straightforward. In the middle of an April night last year, cousins David Jason Jenkins, 37, and Anthony Ray Jenkins, 20, kidnapped and beat a 28-year-old gay man named Kevin Pennington in the remote hills of Kingdom Come State Park in southeastern Kentucky. Anthony Jenkins' wife, Alexis LeeAnn Jenkins, 19, and his sister, Mable Ashley Jenkins, 20, watched the beating. They later testified that the men shouted anti-gay slurs like "Kill that faggot!" as they meted out the abuse. When the men paused to search for a tire iron to finish off Pennington, the victim threw himself over the side of the road to hide, according to the FBI.

Covered in bruises and cuts, Pennington eventually limped back to the road and dialed 911. "They did it because I'm gay," he told the dispatcher, according to court records. "They said they was going to kill me."

(Click here for HuffPost's in-depth investigation into the crime.)

The government alleged that all four Jenkins targeted Pennington because he was gay. This past spring, Alexis and Ashley Jenkins pleaded guilty to the hate crime charges, leading to the first-ever convictions for a gay bias crime under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which was signed by President Barack Obama in 2009.

The men both pleaded not guilty to all charges. Although they didn't deny that a fight had occurred, their lawyers sought to frame the incident as a struggle over a drug deal gone wrong.

Late Wednesday night, after nearly five hours of deliberation, a jury in London, Ky., convicted the Jenkins men of kidnapping and conspiracy charges, but rejected the theory that hatred had motivated their crimes. Andrew Stephens, the court-appointed lawyer for David Jason Jenkins, sounded jubilant on the phone as he recounted the defense's successes, despite the fact that his client still faces the possibility of life in prison.

Stephens credited the failure of the government's hate crime theory to two main factors. First, he said, the evidence dispelled any doubt that a dispute over drugs had played a role in the incident; second, testimony from both women and from Pennington likely convinced the jury that three of the four Jenkinses are themselves bisexual. "There were questions about everybody's sexuality except Anthony's," the lawyer said.

When the trial began, some legal experts thought the government might rack up its first victory in a gay hate crime case. The acquittal has them assessing why the government failed and has added strength to the argument that hate crimes are too difficult to prove.

The story that emerged in the trial was complicated and ambiguous, and that is far from unusual in hate crime prosecutions. "A lot of these cases that look like they are poster cases of hate crime and bias, on close inspection turn out to be much more complicated situations," said James B. Jacobs, a law professor at New York University and one of the leading critics of hate crime laws.

Echoing the closing statement of the defense lawyers, who argued that the government had brought the case for political reasons, Jacobs said he thought it wasn't necessary for the feds to prosecute the case under the hate crime law. "It was a clear case apparently of kidnapping and assault," he said. "That's a very serious crime with a very serious punishment. What's wrong with that?"

Like the other experts interviewed, Jack Levin, a professor of sociology and criminology at Northeastern University and author of The Violence of Hate, questioned why the government had chosen such a complicated case to test the law. In the majority of violent hate crimes, he said, the victim and the attacker are strangers. In this case, all five had known each other for years.

And then there was sexuality of the attackers. "Let's face it," Levin said. "As a practical matter, if you're [the victim and the perpetrator are] in the same group, the jury will be more reluctant to convict someone of a hate crime."

Despite the acquittal on the hate crime charges, he argued, the trial was still a victory for the government.

"The feds get criticized too often for ignoring hate crime investigations," Levin said. "That's why the federal government wins even if the defendant is acquitted. They came up with the charge and took a risk, and now who's at fault for the acquittal??

He answered his own question: "The jury, not the feds."

Suzanne Goldberg, a professor at Columbia Law School, also described the case as a victory for the government, noting that the defense lost its challenge to the constitutionality of the hate crime law before the trial even began. "It is a big deal that the court rejected the challenge to the hate crimes law," she said.

With two guilty pleas from the Jenkins women and two possible life sentences for the Jenkins men, the prosecution can hardly be portrayed as an outright bust. But hate crime laws are intended to improve society -- to carve out a safe space for minorities by outlawing violence motivated by bias -- and by that measure, some felt the case fell short of achieving its goal.

"I'm not sure the federal criminal prosecution leaves this community in any better shape," said Katherine Franke, a professor at Columbia Law School and the director of the school's Center for Gender and Sexuality Law.

"The law is a very blunt instrument," Franke continued. "It can't tolerate or handle complex questions like the questions of sexual identity and motivation that were present in this case. The law deals much more easily with things like a burning cross, a noose or a swastika -- unambiguous kinds of hateful messages."

If the government really hopes to advance the safety of gay people, Franke continued, its resources would be better spent on social programs like education. Harlan County, the corner of Appalachia where the crime occurred and where the Jenkins live, has been battered over generations by poverty, drugs, environmental degradation and violence of all kinds.

For now, despite the acquittal, the government said it is more dedicated than ever to prosecuting hate crimes of every sort. "I'm very proud of the work of our trial team, and we we will continue to move forward very aggressively and evenhandedly in this area," said Thomas Perez, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.

Since 2009, when Obama signed the new legislation, the government has successfully prosecuted 13 cases against 37 defendants for a range of bias crimes. This is the first of those cases, Perez said, where the defendants have been acquitted of the hate crime charges.

Under the Obama administration, the government has increased the number of hate crime prosecutions by 20 percent, and Perez said that he expects this tally may continue to rise. "I'd like to report that hate crime prosecutions are going down because the problem has abated," he said, "but the facts do not so indicate, regrettably."

Private Jets Help People Beat the Hassles of Air Travel

(NewsUSA) ? Remember when you thought flying was fun?

That was before the days when airplane cabins felt like cattle cars, when baggage wasn?t something to be nickel and dimed over, and when TSA screeners ? yes, them ? thought frisking 89-year-old former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger at LaGuardia Airport recently made perfect sense.

?Surely there?s ? some middle ground between illegal profiling and patting down octogenarians,? the New York Times editorialized.

Little wonder that research by the U.S. Travel Association suggests that about 41 million people avoid air travel yearly because of the so-called ?hassle factor.?

Ah, but you don?t have to put up with the hassles.

These days, it?s easier than you think to travel by private jet ? largely because of wider choices that include buying anywhere from an entire jet to as little as one-sixteenth of a share in one, as well as purchasing jet cards. Flexjet (www.flexjet.com), for example, through its expanded portfolio of solutions, caters to those seeking even more flexibility.

?We wanted to make it easier for people to see why we?re the premium experience in the private jet industry,? said Fred Reid, Flexjet?s president.

Picture it: After deciding as few as 10 hours earlier that you want to weekend in Aspen, say, or need to pack a multiple-city business trip into a single day, you arrive at one of the 5,000 airports accessible by private aircraft nationwide (compared to just 450 for commercial airlines). Whereupon, instead of long lines and pat-downs, you?re whisked aboard by ID-checking flight attendants.

Within minutes, you?re airborne and nibbling a bowl of warm nuts. (You remember nuts, right?)

?No oxygen-mask tutorials, no guy shoving his backpack into your overhead,? said Reid.

Then the real pampering begins.

Haute cuisine served on Pickard china. Ergonomic armchairs from which to comfortably work the phone. A table area that converts into a full-size bed with 600-thread count Egyptian linens.

All that was what convinced Tom Wyatt, the 33-year-old president of a private golf club in South Carolina, to start flying privately late last year. ?It?s just so simple and painless,? he told the Wall Street Journal.

As a division of Bombardier, the world?s largest business aviation manufacturer, Flexjet boasts the youngest fractional aircraft in the industry (averaging about five years) and impeccable customer service, and is about to add the much-anticipated, all-new Learjet 85 to its collection of Learjet and Challenger jets.

About the Learjet 85 aircraft: It can fly really, really fast.

Timberlake gag nuptial video hit with legal action

By Josh Grossberg, E! Online

Michael Nelson / EPA file

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel are all smiles at a Lakers basketball game in May. The couple recently got married in Italy.

Celebrating your nuptials in a resort in Southern Italy is pretty cool. Making fun of the poor and downtrodden...not so much.

A lawyer for Justin Huchel, Justin Timberlake's real-estate pal who made an eight-minute "gag" video featuring homeless people that was shown at the former 'N Syncer's posh wedding to Jessica Biel, is threatening legal action after Gawker posted a 20-second clip online Wednesday, prompting outrage among the newlyweds' fans.

Inside Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel's wedding: handwritten vows, guest snubs and tears

Huchel's attorney, Michael J. Saltz, has sent a cease-and-desist letter to the website threatening it with a lawsuit unless Gawker took down what he said is "a protected copyright work" and destroyed all copies it has in its possession.

"Mr. Huchel made a video to be used and exhibited privately at Justin Timberlake's wedding as a private joke without Mr. Timberlake's knowledge," wrote Saltz. "Further, Mr. Huchel informs us that his copyrighted video was recently stolen."

There was no immediate comment from reps for Timberlake or Biel. As of this morning, Gawker had initially refused to comply with the take-down request but later removed after a second letter.

Source: Timberbiel wedding did not cost $6.5 million

The clip opens with a title card that reads, "Greetings from your Hollywood friends who just couldn't make it." It's followed by Huchel interviewing 10 random people on the streets, all apparently homeless, who send best wishes to Timberlake and Biel.

"Justin and Jessica, I haven't seen you for a long time. I hope the wedding goes fine for you. My gift is in the mail," says one toothless man.

"Good luck and watch your man," offers another, who's apparently either a transvestite or transgender.

Huchel then suggests to a man named Robert that he "go skins" and leave his shirt off while offering congratulations. After the man does so, the video concludes with another card saying, "Love Huch and Rachel."

According to Gawker, Huchel intended for the clip to poke fun at the outrageous expense the Hollywood couple went to for their extravagant ceremony. But once it hit the Internet, many Timberlake and Biel devotees took to Twitter to denounce the video as being in poor taste and exploiting the homeless.

"Not funny some of them were probably war vets. I hope they at least paid them," wrote one commenter on YouTube.

Added J.T. follower StephBreezy678: "It's official I am no longer a @timberlake fan!! Unfollowing you right now! Mocking the homeless is wrong! #Pissed."

Wall Street gains, but off highs after data; P&G jumps

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street edged up on Thursday, retreating from session highs as investors were wary of betting aggressively after the S&P 500's worst five-day stretch since May and the data sent more tepid signals on the economy.

Business investment showed signs of stalling in September, while overall U.S. durable goods orders rose more than expected, though orders excluding volatile defense goods and aircraft were unchanged.

Shares of Dow component Procter & Gamble stood out, gaining 3.4 percent to $70.41 after the world's largest household products maker reported a better-than-expected profit. That was enough to inspire some early buying across the market, but the gains had faded by late morning.

The broad S&P 500 fell more than 3 percent over the last five sessions following a weak string of corporate earnings.

"It's a sloppy market," said Gordon Charlop, a managing director at Rosenblatt Securities, in New York. He added that he didn't have "any sense of impending doom."

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> edged up 10.79 points, or 0.08 percent, to 13,088.13. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> gained 3.32 points, or 0.24 percent, to 1,412.07. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> rose 2.94 points, or 0.10 percent, to 2,984.63.

The S&P telecom sector index <.gspt> slipped 0.3 percent, with AT&T shedding 0.6 percent to $34.50.

Among tech stocks, Apple lost 1.1 percent to $609.80 ahead of results expected after the closing bell.

Of the 244 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported results, 62.3 percent have beaten expectations, slightly better than the 62 percent that typically exceed estimates, according to Thomson Reuters data. But revenue remained disappointing, with just 36.3 percent of companies reporting higher-than-expected revenue - compared with a historic beat rate of 62 percent.

The benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> lost 3.6 percent over the previous five sessions - its worst performance since mid-May. The broad index is down 3.7 percent from its closing high of September 14, following weak earnings outlooks and top-line revenue misses by large multinational companies.

Earnings season overall has shown domestic companies beating profit forecasts, while global companies have reported lighter revenue, said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial in Newark, New Jersey.

Given the euro zone's debt problems and China's slower growth, "it shouldn't be a surprise that it was going to hit earnings season," Krosby said.

China's factory output should grow faster in the last three months of 2012 than in the third quarter, the country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said, though the recovery remains clouded by uncertainty in export markets.

Ag business leaders challenged to help students achieve career ...

?

Agriculture business leaders were called to action at the Pathways to Prosperity Breakfast this morning.

Harvard Graduate School of Education?s Pathways to Prosperity Project Director Dr. William Symonds, AgCareers.com President Eric Spell and National FFA Organization CEO Dr. Dwight Armstrong spoke to the group about how they can help students reach career success.

Symonds said the way we think about education and career development in young adults needs to change. Business leaders have an important role in preparing students to be successful in the work place.

In February 2011, the Pathways to Prosperity Project released a report, ?Pathways to Prosperity: Meeting the Challenge of Preparing Young Adults for the 21st Century,? which explained why the U.S. is not producing students ready for the workplace. The report promoted an educational system focused on preparing students for their future through various educational pathways and connections with potential employers.

?We?re taking too narrow of an approach,? Symonds said.

Our society places great pressure on students to pursue four-year degrees while that?s not what the market demands, Symonds said.

Only 33 percent of jobs require a 4-year degree, 30 percent require less than four years of higher education and 36 percent require only a high school diploma, he said.

Symonds said students are more aware of careers that require four or more years of education than jobs that don?t require as much education. However, demand for students with skill sets, such as welding, is great.

Symonds said we need to stop labeling students who don?t attend a 4-year college as failures and start valuing other places of higher education, such as community colleges and vocational schools.

?We need to emphasize other pathways to success,? Symonds said.

Students need to get out of the school room and into the work place to gain experiences, Symonds said. Businesses can offer these experiences through job shadowing, apprenticeships and internships.

Students learn more with a real-life approach rather than just academic, Symonds said.

?Somehow, we?ve lost sight of the value of this in our young people,? Symonds said.

When the majority of students lived on farms, they gained a skill set at home while the school systems focused on academics. Symonds said because the majority of students do not live on farms many have lost skill sets and the school systems have remained the same. Our society overemphasizes academics and underemphasizes skill sets.

Eric Spell, president of AgCareers.com, said there is a growing need for students interested in the agriculture industry. There are currently 23 million people employed by agriculture, and five percent, or approximately 1 million people, plan to retire within the next five years, according to Spell.

The future holds many opportunities for agriculture students, and students should start preparing now.

?Many young people have no idea of the opportunities that are out there,? Symonds said.

The ?Agricultural Career Network, AgCN, ?can be used by businesses and students to improve the future of agriculture through working together toward career success.

LG Nexus 4 renders leak [Update: more]

Android Central

Update: Added additional image from @evleaks.

Here it is -- the LG Nexus 4. Some official-looking press renders for the much anticipated fourth-gen Nexus phone has emerged via noted Twitter leaker @evleaks. The images confirm what we've already seen from the extensive Belarusian leak of a few weeks ago, while showing us the final rear chassis design. As expected, "with Google" is gone, and in its place is a big old Nexus logo. In addition, LG's "crystal reflection process" back has dots arranged in a speckled pattern, in a possible nod to the original Nexus One live wallpaper.

The second image released by @evleaks sports a different notification dropdown setup to the first, suggesting that the on-screen image in the earlier shot is likely a placeholder. (Note that promotional shots like this are often assembled from scratch by manufacturers in Photoshop, making on-screen images easy to swap out.)

In any case, it seems this is our clearest look at the Nexus 4 yet. Don't forget we'll be live from New York City next Monday, Oct. 29, to bring you full coverage of Google's new Nexus devices and Android announcements!

Check past the break for the original image.

Texas opens first 85-mph highway in U.S., but trucks may shun it

LOCKHART, Texas (Reuters) - Everything's bigger in Texas including, as of Wednesday, the speed limit.

A new 41-mile (65-kilometer) stretch of toll road between San Antonio and Austin is now open with an 85-mph (137-kph) speed limit, the highest posted speed limit in the United States.

State transportation officials hope that the speed limit will be an incentive for motorists to pay the roughly $12 toll to drive on the 90-mile (145-km) road.

Joe Krier, who is on the board of the private company that built the new road, said there is no reason why motorists should not drive that fast. "This project was designed to support it, and the engineers are confident with it," he said.

Still, the higher speed has some safety advocates concerned.

"We all worry about safety. Such high speeds lead to worse accidents and a greater loss of life," said Sandrea Helin, president of the Southwest Insurance Information Service.

But some 18-wheel trucks, many of which are hauling items manufactured in Mexico to plants in the United States, may not be keen to take to the new road, according to Darrin Roth of the American Trucking Association. Many trucking companies prevent their vehicles from going faster than 70 mph or 75 mph, he said, and fuel consumption goes up exponentially as speeds increase - potentially cutting into company profits.

"For truck drivers to be on a road where other motorists are going 85 or even more, they just don't feel safe," Roth said.

Texas for 17 years has had a posted speed limit of 80 mph along two interstate highways in the remote western part of the state. The 85 mph limit is the result of a 2011 state law that allows that speed on new highways that meeting stringent safety tests.

Keep Your Cords and Cables in Zipper Bags for No-Hassle, Tangle-Free Storage

Keep Your Cords and Cables in Zipper Bags for No-Hassle, Tangle-Free StorageWe've featured many ways to manage cables, many of which involve wrapping techniques that are good buy time consuming. Wouldn't it be better if you didn't have to do much of anything? Well, that's an option. Just shove each cable in its own plastic bag. The folks over at life tips blog Life Don't Panic explain:

Most times you will end up putting a bunch of cords in a box or drawer. Then they get all tangled up. An easy way to prevent this is to get zip lock bags and put the cords in the bags. Then you can throw all the bags into a drawer or box as usual.

This solution is effective and allows you to be fairly lazy with your organization. You can even label the bags so you know what each cable is for (if it isn't already obvious). What's not to like?

NASA spacecraft sees huge burp at Saturn after large storm

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? NASA's Cassini spacecraft has tracked the aftermath of a rare massive storm on Saturn. Data reveal record-setting disturbances in the planet's upper atmosphere long after the visible signs of the storm abated, in addition to an indication the storm was more forceful than scientists previously thought.

Data from Cassini's composite infrared spectrometer (CIRS) instrument revealed the storm's powerful discharge sent the temperature in Saturn's stratosphere soaring 150 degrees Fahrenheit (83 kelvins) above normal. At the same time, researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., detected a huge increase in the amount of ethylene gas, the origin of which is a mystery. Ethylene, an odorless, colorless gas, isn't typically observed on Saturn. On Earth, it is created by natural and human-made sources.

Goddard scientists describe the unprecedented belch of energy in a paper to be published in the Nov. 20 issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

"This temperature spike is so extreme it's almost unbelievable, especially in this part of Saturn's atmosphere, which typically is very stable," said Brigette Hesman, the study's lead author and a University of Maryland scientist who works at Goddard. "To get a temperature change of the same scale on Earth, you'd be going from the depths of winter in Fairbanks, Alaska, to the height of summer in the Mojave Desert."

First detected by Cassini in Saturn's northern hemisphere on Dec. 5, 2010, the storm grew so large that an equivalent storm on Earth would blanket most of North America from north to south and wrap around our planet many times. This type of giant disturbance on Saturn typically occurs every 30 Earth years, or once every Saturn year.

Not only was this the first storm of its kind to be studied by a spacecraft in orbit around the planet, but it was the first to be observed at thermal infrared wavelengths. Infrared data from CIRS allowed scientists to take the temperature of Saturn's atmosphere and to track phenomena that are invisible to the naked eye.

Temperature measurements by CIRS, first published in May 2011, revealed two unusual beacons of warmer-than-normal air shining brightly in the stratosphere. These indicated a massive release of energy into the atmosphere. After the visible signs of the storm started to fade, CIRS data revealed the two beacons had merged. The temperature of this combined air mass shot up to more than minus 64 degrees Fahrenheit (above 220 kelvins).

According to Hesman, the huge spike of ethylene generated at the same time peaked with 100 times more ethylene than scientists thought possible for Saturn. Goddard scientists confirmed the release of the gas using the Celeste spectrometer mounted on the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope on Kitt Peak in Arizona.

The team still is exploring the origin of the ethylene, but has ruled out a large reservoir deep in the atmosphere.

"We've really never been able to see ethylene on Saturn before, so this was a complete surprise," said Goddard's Michael Flasar, the CIRS team lead.

A complementary paper led by Cassini team associate Leigh Fletcher of Oxford University, England, describes how the two stratospheric beacons merged to become the largest and hottest stratospheric vortex ever detected in our solar system. Initially, it was larger than Jupiter's Great Red Spot.

Their paper in the journal Icarus, which combines CIRS data with additional infrared images from other Earth-based telescopes, including NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility at Mauna Kea, Hawaii, also reports a powerful collar of clockwise winds -- encompassing a bizarre soup of gases -- around the vortex.

"These studies will give us new insight into some of the photochemical processes at work in the stratospheres of Saturn, other giants in our solar system, and beyond," said Scott Edgington, Cassini deputy project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency. The mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Hesman's work was funded in part by NASA's Planetary Astronomy Program in Washington. The CIRS instrument and Celeste spectrometer were built at Goddard.

The Dryden junior boys volleyball team competed in their time travel tournament of the year Oct. 19 and 20, taking home a solid ninth place. The tournament was hosted by Sturgeon Heights collegiate in Winnipeg. In round robin play, Dryden played close matches against Mennonite Brethren CI, Vincent Massey, Sturgeon Heights and Selkirk. The playoff draw pitted Dryden against St. James high school, a match they won 25-18, 25-20 to take home ninth place.

Through the course of the weekend, setter Deven Trist, power hitter Kevin Woolfrey and libero Matt Wood were awarded player of the game distinctions.

It?s always nice to end the travel portion of your season on a high note,? said Coach Steve Laidlaw. ?Manitoba always provides excellent competition for the boys. The season is progressing as planned, the team is growing together and improving every day. Hopefully we will peak come NorWOSSA.?

The junior Eagles have clinched first place in NorWOSSA league play with a 6-0 record. In addition to the two remaining league games, the Eagles will host the DHS Pumpkin smash tournament October 26 and 27, featuring teams from across northwestern Ontario.

If You Ask Me About Home Staging ... And You Did. | DIY Home ...

These are some of the questions I've received lately from readers and others.

If you have a question about staging your own home, make it part of the comments here. I'll give my advice, and other readers can join in the conversation.

You can also ask questions and give advice on my Facebook Group Page.

Q: Our fenced?backyard is a wasteland. We let our dogs have the run of it, so we have basically no landscaping there. The front yard has good curb appeal. What can I do?

A: There really isn't much you can do, is there? Fencing a portion of the yard would cost money, look less than satisfactory, and probably make your dogs unhappy.

Replacing your fencing with invisible fencing would also cost money, and necessitate landscaping the backyard. ?

I'd make sure the landscaped areas around your home that are outside the "dog run" look really pretty.

With luck, you'll find a buyer who wants a backyard that's low maintenance and dog-friendly.

Q:?Are twin beds okay in a guest bedroom, or should I stage it with a queen bed?

A: If you have only two bedrooms, I would stage both with a queen or double bed. But if you have three bedrooms, I'd stage the third with twin beds. If the third room is small, even a single or a sleeper would be fine.

Also, let your budget be your guide. Don't go out and buy beds you don't want or need.

Q: Should I change the bathroom faucets in my home? They are gold. They work well but I know they aren't the latest style.
A: In my eBook, I recommend changing faucets and other hardware like hinges and doorknobs so that ?metals match. Matched hardware makes a home look more like a new home.

The gold faucets will definitely date your home (unless they are actually sold brass and in an historic home). However, if you are on a tight budget, and the faucets are in great condition, and you're not replacing other outdated, fixed features such as 40-year old countertops and pink toilets, I'd let the gold faucets stay.

In other words, it depends on your home, how you've priced it, and the type of buyer you expect to attract. ? ?

Q:?When we stage our home, do we need to convert our home office back into a bedroom?

A: A home office is a definite perk. But homes for sale are listed according to how many bedrooms they have. So, if you reduce the number of bedrooms in your listing, you might as well reduce your price and the desirability of your home!

A room is a bedroom if it has a closet. My advice would be to stage your home office as a bedroom, but keep its office status as well. It's all in how you arrange the furniture. Either squeeze the office space down to just a desk and chair. Or squeeze the sleeping space down to a convertible sofa or sleeper chair.

Q: I plan to paint all three bedrooms in our home. Is it important to paint inside closets, too?

A: Good for you for giving your walls a facelift! Remember to keep those colors light and neutral.

Even though the job may sound daunting, I recommend painting closets. You may have already decluttered your bedroom closets. If not, painting is a great excuse to empty them, then discard or recycle or put into storage what's left.

The good news is that when you paint a closet you don't have to get too fussy about wall imperfections and such. You just want it to look bright and clean. For this reason, I always paint closets white rather than the color of the bedroom. Give the ceiling a fresh coat of white as well, and you'll be surprised what a difference it makes.

Do YOU have a question about staging your home for the real estate market? I'd like to hear it.

Bobcats face long road back to NBA relevance

CHARLOTTE (AP) -- Michael Jordan's Bobcats have nowhere to go but up. That's the glass-half-full approach the Bobcats will take this season after finishing with the worst winning percentage in NBA history last year.

The Bobcats were a woeful 7-59 (.106).

Charlotte lost 20 games by 20 or more points under former head coach Paul Silas and finished the season with 23 straight losses, ironically the same number that once defined greatness and championships for Jordan the player.

No surprise the Bobcats' focus is ahead, not back.

They have a new coach in Mike Dunlap, five new players on the roster and even changed their color scheme and shortened the name on the front of their news jerseys to read: Cats.

The team changed its motto, too -- Tougher. Faster. Stronger.

Taxes go up in 2013 for 163 million workers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama isn't talking about it and neither is Mitt Romney. But come January, 163 million workers can expect to feel the pinch of a big tax increase regardless of who wins the election.

A temporary reduction in Social Security payroll taxes is due to expire at the end of the year and hardly anyone in Washington is pushing to extend it. Neither Obama nor Romney has proposed an extension, and it probably wouldn't get through Congress anyway, with lawmakers in both parties down on the idea.

Even Republicans who have sworn off tax increases have little appetite to prevent one that will cost a typical worker about $1,000 a year, and two-earner family with six-figure incomes as much as $4,500.

Why are so many politicians sour on continuing the payroll tax break?

Republicans question whether reducing the tax two years ago has done much to stimulate the sluggish economy. Politicians from both parties say they are concerned that it threatens the independent revenue stream that funds Social Security.

They are backed by powerful advocates for seniors, including AARP, who adamantly oppose any extension.

"The payroll tax holiday was intended to be temporary and there is strong bipartisan support to let that tax provision expire," said Sen. Orrin of Utah, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. "The continued extension of a temporary payroll tax holiday has serious long-term implications for Social Security and, frankly, it's not even clear that it has helped to boost our ailing economy."

The question of renewing the payroll tax cut has been overshadowed by the expiration of a much bigger package of tax cuts first enacted under President George W. Bush. The Bush-era tax cuts also expire at the end of the year, and Congress is expected to try to address them after the election, in a lame-duck session.

The payroll tax cut could become part of the mix in negotiations that could go in many directions. But lawmakers in both political parties say they doubt it.

"I think there's a growing consensus that Congress and the president can't continue to divert such a critical revenue stream from Social Security," said Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, a senior Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. "I think more and more Americans understand that that payroll tax cut, while politically appealing, is endangering Social Security."

Before he was named as Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., disparaged the payroll tax cut, calling it "sugar-high economics" that wouldn't promote long-term growth.

Social Security is funded by a 12.4 percent tax on wages up to $110,100, rising to $113,700 in 2013. Half is paid by employers and the other half is paid by workers. For 2011 and 2012, Congress and Obama cut the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent.

A worker making $50,000 saved $1,000 a year, or a little more than $19 a week. A worker making $100,000 saved $2,000 a year.

The beauty of the tax cut is that is shows up in weekly paychecks, giving workers more money to spend or save. The downside is that some workers may not notice a $19-a-week increase in pay, making them unlikely to credit the politicians who made it happen.

Under the law, Congress is reimbursing Social Security for the lost revenue, estimated at $103 billion in 2011 and $112 billion in 2012. But Congress didn't cut spending or raise other taxes to offset the lost revenue, so the payroll tax cut is being financed with borrowed money, adding to the national debt.

Democrats are more willing to defend the tax cut, saying it helped prop up the economy during a rough stretch while providing what amounted to a 2 percent pay increase to millions of middle-income workers. But they, too, are concerned about maintaining Social Security's source of revenue.

"I think people realize that was a temporary thing," said Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska.

Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, a senior Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, said he thinks there is evidence that the tax cut helped the economy. But, he added, "I'm not sure that it met expectations."

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said she, too, wants to let the tax cut expire.

Larry Summers, Obama's former economic adviser, is a lonely voice in Washington calling to extend the payroll tax cut. He said in a recent speech that the economy is too fragile to reduce workers' incomes.

Obama pushed for the tax cut in late 2010 as a way to increase workers' take-home pay to help boost consumer spending and provide a spark for the economy. Economists were divided on the economic benefits. Many said it probably helped increase consumer spending but there was no consensus on the magnitude.

The initial tax cut was for only a year, and many Republicans in Congress wanted to let it lapse at the end of 2011. But Obama and Democratic lawmakers successfully fought to extend it through 2012.

Obama, however, didn't include the tax cut in his 2013 budget proposal, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told Congress this year that he saw no reason to extend it again.

White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage wouldn't rule out an extension but wouldn't commit to one, either.

"The president fought extremely hard last year in the face of Republican opposition to ensure that the payroll tax cut was extended," Brundage said. "There are a number of tax issues that Congress will have to deal with at the end of the year, this being one of them, and we will continue to evaluate all of the options available to us at that time."

Romney's campaign hammers Obama almost every day for proposing to let Bush-era tax cuts expire for individuals making more than $200,000 and married couples making more than $250,000. But Romney's tax plan would let the payroll tax cut expire, an issue he doesn't mention on the stump.

Romney's campaign declined to discuss the issue.
