Mali Islamists stone unmarried couple to death

Islamists in northern Mali have stoned an unmarried couple to death, the first reported sharia killing since they occupied the area, ratcheting up pressure on an embattled interim government.

The execution came as interim President Dioncounda Traore finalised a unity government which foreign partners have demanded be formed by Tuesday to take decisive action against the jihadists who have cleaved the nation in two.

As politicians grappled for solutions in Bamako and west African capitals, the Al-Qaeda linked Islamists grew bolder, dragging a rural couple to the centre of the town of Aguelhok Sunday for a public stoning.

"I was there. The Islamists took the unmarried couple to the centre of Aguelhok. The couple was placed in two holes and the Islamists stoned them to death," said a local government official on condition of anonymity.

"The woman fainted after the first few blows," he said, adding that the man had shouted out once and then fallen silent.

A second official confirmed the information, saying the couple had two children the youngest of which was six months old.

"They were living in the bush, they were brought to town by the Islamists who stoned them to death. People came out to watch, there were witnesses," he said, also not wishing to be identified.

The small town in the region of Kidal near the Algerian border was one of the first to be captured by Tuareg separatist rebels on January 24.

Some 82 civilians and soldiers were summarily executed during the attack, France said earlier this year, accusing the rebels of using Al-Qaeda style tactics.

The Tuareg rebellion sparked a March coup by angry and overwhelmed soldiers, but the chaos only allowed the desert nomads and Islamists fighting on their flanks to seize the country's north, an area larger than France.

The Islamist groups, which experts say are acting under the aegis of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) have since chased out the Tuareg separatists and are firmly in control.

In Timbuktu, they have also implemented strict Islamic law and destroyed ancient World Heritage sites which they consider idolatrous.

Once one of the region's stable democracies, Mali has crumbled into despair in half a year and the interim government which took over from the junta has been powerless in the face of the jihadist occupation.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) wants to send a 3,000-strong military force to Mali but is waiting for United Nations approval and a formal request from a more inclusive government.

Traore on Sunday announced the creation of new bodies tasked with ending the crisis.

In a televised address to the nation, he announced he would be in charge of a High Council of State, lead talks for a unity government himself and create a committee to negotiate with the Islamists.

"Mali will not collapse," Traore said several times during his speech.

ECOWAS had ordered the authorities to form a unity government by July 31 or face sanctions but it reacted positively to Traore's latest measures Monday and said the deadline would be extended.

The 70-year-old was appointed in April as a junta led by Captain Amadou Sanogo which ousted the regime of Amadou Toumani Toure on March 22 handed power to a civilian transition government.

However on May 21 a mob of protesters stormed his office and beat him savagely. He returned Friday from France where he has been recovering since.

The High Council of State is designed to "complete the country's institutional architecture" and "adapt it to socio-political realities."

It will be made up of the interim president and two vice-presidents, one of whom will be in charge of defence and security and handling the crisis in the north. The other will represent the various non-political forces in Mali.

Traore also announced that "neither the president, nor the prime minister, nor the ministers, can run in the next presidential election."

Meanwhile the president of the Malian Islamic High Council, Mahmoud Dicko, was in the northern city of Gao on Monday to negotiate with the Islamists, a member of his entourage told AFP.

"We will meet with our Malian brothers, if they are Muslim like us, there is no reason for us not to find a solution," the source said on condition of anonymity.

Dicko would notably meet the leader of one of the Islamist groups Ansar Dine (Defenders of Faith) Iyad Ag Ghaly.

New Boston College Website of Digitized Rare Books Explores Jesuit Missionaries in China

From a Boston College Announcement:

An exquisite collection of rare books that chronicles the scholarly work of Jesuit missionaries in China from the 16th through the 18th centuries has been digitized for the web through the year-long effort of a Jesuit historian and scholar working with the Boston College Jesuitana Collection in Burns Library.

Jeremy Clarke, S.J., an Australian Jesuit and assistant professor of history at BC, has launched Beyond Ricci, www.bc.edu/beyondricci, a searchable website that provides scholars and researchers access to books containing historical narratives, maps, correspondence and musical compositions in five languages that depict life in China in early modern history and the East-West exchanges initiated by the early Jesuit missionaries.

?This website takes knowledge and information that is rare and beautiful and puts it into the academic domain, providing an interdisciplinary resource for scholars and students of disciplines ranging from history and geography, to Latin and Chinese,? said Fr. Clarke, whose project was funded through a grant from BC?s Academic Teaching Advisory Board and the Office of the Provost. ?It was a labor of love, and an act of homage to my Jesuit brothers and their Chinese counterparts whose remarkable scholarship is preserved in these rare books that will now be available to visitors from Chestnut Hill to Canberra, San Francisco to Shanghai.?

Among the many notable digitized items from the rare book collection are a 1735 translation of a French encyclopedia of China; an extensively detailed 18th century atlas; melody lines from the Chinese Imperial Court that were transcribed by Jesuits in the mid-18th century; and a translation of Confucian texts by the Jesuit missionaries that represented the first introduction of Confucius to the Western world.

?As a rare books library, we are pleased to make our collection available for this project,? said Bridget Burke, associate university librarian for special collections at BC. ?We have the largest Jesuitana collection in the United States, so collaborating on digital humanities projects gives us an opportunity to do what no other library can do.?

Authorities: TSA agents rescued kidnapped woman

TSA agents in Miami, Fla. say they rescued a woman, who they believe was kidnapped and allegedly beaten by two women, before she was forced onto a plane. WTVJ's Willard Shepard reports.

By Willard Shepard, NBCMiami.com

A woman who was beaten, kidnapped and brought to Miami International Airport by her assailants could have been forced to fly with them to New York, but two alert Transportation Security Administration agents noticed that something was wrong, authorities said.

In airport surveillance video obtained exclusively by NBC 6 South Florida, the victim is seen arriving at the terminal on July 5. She wore a scarf around her face to conceal the injuries sustained in an alleged beating, authorities said.

Two Miami Transportation Security Administration officers said they detected something was wrong with her.

Read the original story on NBCMiami.com.

??When she came closer I realized she was black and blue on both sides of her face, her forehead. I noticed her shoulder looked like she had a big rug burn,? said a TSA officer named Ray, who did not want to use his full name nor show his face on television for security reasons. ?Later on I found out from her that they had dragged her across the floor.?

She looked afraid, said another TSA officer, Danielle, who also did not want to be fully identified.

The fear came from a beating the woman took inside a fifth-floor room at the Best Western hotel in North Miami, police said. Detectives said the woman came to South Florida with a group on vacation -- but it turned to a nightmare when one woman accused the victim having an intimate relationship with her boyfriend. She was then beaten and kidnapped, North Miami Police said.

She was forced to go to the bank and withdraw funds, threatened, and taken to the airport for a flight back to New Jersey, police said.

That's when the two TSA officers, who are trained to detect suspicious behavior that could be an indicator of a terrorist attack, used those skills to save the woman as she was about to go through the security checkpoint.

"The way that she was acting, we actually thought it was a case of an abduction because she looked very young,? Danielle said.

Her partner approached her and asked her to come with them, Danielle added.

?She told us basically to help her and to take her away from the people that she was traveling with,? Danielle said.

Other officers then stepped in to detain four individuals, two women and two men.

Melissa Pineiro is charged with kidnapping, robbery, false imprisonment and battery, and Tori Beato is charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, battery and theft. They are pleading not guilty, have both bonded out of jail and will be back in Miami-Dade court Aug. 6, according to court records.

The two men were released.

?I believe we saved her life that day,? Ray said of the victim. ?According to her, she told us they threatened to kill her if she told anybody.?

The head of TSA security at MIA says that its program looking at someone?s behavior -- which when first installed caused some people to be concerned about their privacy -- assisted in bringing this woman to safety.

?In the course of their duty, they did what they were trained to do,? said Mark Hadfield, the agency?s director at MIA. ?They saw stress, they saw fear, and it turned out that this woman was in really dire danger.?

Texas orders new rules to halt zebra mussels

HOUSTON ? Texas wildlife officials want to extend emergency rules designed to prevent a destructive mussel from continuing an invasive march through the state?s waterways.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said Monday the zebra mussel presents ?an immediate danger? to wildlife.

The mussel is a small non-native shellfish that has wreaked havoc in the Great Lakes and several rivers, including the Mississippi and Hudson.

Studies find power companies in the Great Lakes region can spend $130 million annually to remove the mussels from electric plants. Texas officials fear the shellfish will clog water treatment intake pipes.

The TPWD says the mussels were found in mid-July in two waterways. The new rules require boat owners to take special measures and limit the type of bait to be used in some waterways.

Jay Jaffe: Should the Texas Rangers trade Josh Hamilton?

Josh Hamilton has been feeling the heat from his bosses during a summer-long slump. (Landov)

The trading deadline is now four days away, and the Rangers have yet to strike. Indeed, all eyes are on general manager Jon Daniels as he sizes up the market for ways to improve the two-time defending American League champions, who are tied with the Yankees for the league?s best record at 59-39. Particularly with the loss of Colby Lewis to a torn flexor tendon and the uncertainty about Roy Oswalt?s balky lower back, Daniels? primary focus is on a frontline starting pitcher to shore up his rotation, and while his lineup doesn?t have any glaring holes, the team has scored just 3.44 runs per game this month en route to an 8-10 record. At the center of the sluggish offense is Josh Hamilton, who has admitted a lack of focus after being called out by both president/CEO Nolan Ryan and manager Ron Washington.

Here?s a thought from leftfield regarding the star leftfielder (and occasional centerfielder): The Rangers should consider trading Hamilton. On the surface, the idea might seem outrageous, and perhaps even heartless, given the support network the team has worked hard to build in order to aid the slugger in his ongoing battle against substance abuse. But particularly at this time of year, reminders that baseball is a business are everywhere, with underperforming teams stripped for parts as they look to the future rather than wallow in the recent past. Hamilton, a pending free agent, rebuffed the Rangers? efforts to sign him to a contract extension earlier this season, and while he has expressed a desire to return, he presents a whole lot of risk. He?s an elite hitter, at least when he?s healthy and focused, but he is also 31 years old and physically fragile, averaging just 114 games per season from 2009-2011 while serving stints on the disabled list for an oblique strain, a sports hernia, lower back woes, broken ribs, and a broken humerus. Admittedly, some of those injuries are traumatic ones that aren?t particularly likely to recur, but back and muscular problems don?t disappear with age, particularly for players on the wrong side of 30.

Hamilton jumped out to a ridiculously hot start this year, hitting .368/.420/.764 with 21 homers through the end of May, including a record-tying four-homer game on May 8 in Baltimore. Those numbers not only gave him a leg up on winning his second AL MVP award, they pointed towards a rare opportunity for a freshly anointed MVP winner to hit the free agent market. Not since Barry Bonds became a free agent after the 1992 and 2001 seasons has that year?s winner reached free agency, though one could also include Alex Rodriguez after he opted out in 2007, not that any team besides the Yankees could afford him.

Before Hamilton could clear his mantel for another trophy, he fell into a prolonged slump, hitting .223/.318/.436 with four home runs in June, and .154/.230/.308 with three homers ? and just seven other hits ? so far in July. The Rangers didn?t suffer too badly in June; while their scoring dipped to 4.82 runs per game (down from 5.71 in the two months prior), they went 19-9. But now the offense has really hit the skids, and Hamilton has shown no signs of emerging, going 1-for-15 in his last four games, and 6-for-42 since the All-Star break. Ryan says his star is giving at-bats away by swinging at bad pitches and failing to work deep into counts. Indeed, his swinging strike rates in June (21.6 percent) and July (22.6 percent) both lead the majors, as does this month?s out-of-zone swing rate of 50.9 percent. Hamilton, who has played in 90 of his team?s 97 games, has admitted that he?s ?out of sorts mentally,? and that his problems aren?t physical.

While trading a player in the throes of a slump isn?t ideal, Hamilton would instantly become the best bat on the market in terms of his overall 2012 production (.287/.356/.587 for a .315 True Average, 11th in the league), to say nothing of his track record (.306/.365/.548 career) or his upside. Even for a two-month rental, trading him would probably net a couple of top prospects, or a prospect and a usable stopgap outfielder. The Reds, for whom Hamilton played in 2007 (and for whom Hamilton?s ?accountability partner,? Johnny Narron, worked), would be a good fit: they need a centerfielder (Drew Stubbs is struggling mightily). That said, their system was hit hard by the Mat Latos deal, and they?re said to desire a right-handed bat given that their righties have hit just .245/.300/.391 this year. The Rays, who originally drafted Hamilton in 1999, could be another fit. Their offense has wheezed in the absence of Evan Longoria, they certainly have prospects that could be put towards the acquisition of a starting pitcher elsewhere, and could offer their own pending free agent outfielder, B.J. Upton, in return ? or they could work out a blockbuster involving James Shields, whom the Rangers are said to be considering as an alternative to Zack Greinke.

Could the Rangers withstand Hamilton?s loss? They hold a five-game lead over the Angels in the AL West, with the A?s just 5 1/2 back as well. Their odds of making the playoffs stand at 99 percent according to Baseball Prospectus. Considering that they won the AL West in each of the past two seasons with Hamilton missing a total of 70 games, it?s hardly an outrageous proposition. They would almost certainly need to add another outfielder to a mix that includes lefty David Murphy (.279/.374 /459, with only 36 plate appearances against southpaws), and righties Craig Gentry (a BABIP-driven .339/.398/.437) and Nelson Cruz (a disappointing .258/.320/.438). Add a player such as the Phillies? switch-hitting Shane Victorino (another pending free agent) or the righty-swinging Upton and the Rangers wouldn?t tilt too heavily to one side, though the latter is actually struggling mightily against southpaws. Such a move would put pressure on Cruz, Mike Napoli (.232/.349/.438) and Michael Young (a dismal .270/.299/.346) to recover some semblance of their prior form, but all have long track records of hitting well, and barring injury are better bets to improve their current numbers than to slump even further.

Trading Hamilton isn?t a necessity for the Rangers to reach the playoffs and make another run at a world championship, and it?s probably something that has less than a 10 percent chance of happening as things currently stand. Admittedly, it would be a shocking move, one that might not be popular with a fan base that has supported Hamilton through thick and thin. The team receiving the slugger would assume no small risk given his admission regarding his current state of mind as well as his track record for finding trouble. But so would the Rangers, who would take on a much different look than the unit that that currently leads the league in scoring at 5.03 runs per game and that has used a good deal of brute offensive force to become an AL powerhouse. Trading Hamilton just might be the move that helps Texas get over the top, and if so, it would be something the fans could forgive. Free agents come and go, but flags fly forever.

What Those Mysterious Cell Phone Fees Fund: $115 Million For Rural Broadband

Photo: TelegraphEver wonder what those mysterious government service fees on your cell phone bill go to fund? Part of it goes toward a newly launched $415 million plan to provide 400,000 rural netizens with some broadband goodness. The Connect America Fund, a Obama-administration supported plan for universal access to broadband, is part of a larger $4.5 billion mission to connect 19 million homes to bit-torrent streaming speeds by 2020. An alien advance party was suddenly nosing around my planet.
?

Worse, they were lawyering up. . . .

In the hilarious tradition of The Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy, Rob Reid takes you on a headlong journey through the outer reaches of the universe?and the inner workings of our absurdly dysfunctional music industry.

Low-level entertainment lawyer Nick Carter thinks it?s a prank, not an alien encounter, when a redheaded mullah and a curvaceous nun show up at his office. But Frampton and Carly are highly advanced (if bumbling) extraterrestrials. And boy, do they have news.

The entire cosmos, they tell him, has been hopelessly hooked on humanity?s music ever since ?Year Zero? (1977 to us), when American pop songs first reached alien ears. This addiction has driven a vast intergalactic society to commit the biggest copyright violation since the Big Bang. The resulting fines and penalties have bankrupted the whole universe. We humans suddenly own everything?and the aliens are not amused.

Nick Carter has just been tapped to clean up this mess before things get ugly, and he?s an unlikely galaxy-hopping hero: He?s scared of heights. He?s also about to be fired. And he happens to have the same name as a Backstreet Boy. But he does know a thing or two about copyright law. And he?s packing a couple of other pencil-pushing superpowers that could come in handy.

Soon he?s on the run from a sinister parrot and a highly combustible vacuum cleaner. With Carly and Frampton as his guides, Nick now has forty-eight hours to save humanity, while hopefully wowing the hot girl who lives down the hall from him.

German coalition member urges "unusual" legal action vs ECB

BERLIN (Reuters) - A member of Chancellor Angela Merkel's junior coalition partner said the German government should consider the "unusual step" of taking legal action against the European Central Bank over bond purchases.

Joerg-Uwe Hahn, a regional leader of the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), is an outsider in his party and often critical of its leaders but his comments highlight growing German unease about the costs of fighting the euro zone debt crisis.

"The European treaties allow member states to sue the ECB," Hahn, a member of the ruling centre-right coalition in the state of Hesse, told Monday's edition of Die Welt newspaper, adding that Berlin should consider opening a lawsuit against the bank via the European Court of Justice.

"It's time to open the toolbox of the (EU's) Lisbon Treaty and see how one can ensure that the ECB is brought into line to focus on its original task: monetary stability," he said, acknowledging that this would be "an unusual step".

Hahn's comments were in response to a pledge last week by ECB President Mario Draghi that the ECB was ready to fight to save the euro. "Within our mandate, the ECB is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro," Draghi said.

Financial markets have interpreted this as meaning the ECB is ready to resume buying the debt of troubled euro zone countries on the secondary market to help bring down high yields on Spanish and Italian government bonds.

Asked about Hahn's suggestion, a senior member of Merkel's Christian Democrats, Norbert Barthle, responded cautiously, telling Die Welt: "If Mario Draghi says the measures are legally covered by the mandate, then I believe him for now."

Merkel has also vowed to do whatever is necessary to save the euro in statements issued over the past few days following separate telephone conversations with French President Francois Hollande and with Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti.

BoatUS Report ? Captain Ken Kreisler's Boat and Yacht Report

Twice in the last month, SPOT Assist Maritime service with BoatUS Towing Services?has proven invaluable for a couple of offshore anglers with disabled fishing vessels far out in the Gulf of Mexico. SPOT combines satellite messaging communications and GPS technology with the nation?s largest fleet of towboats?for recreational boaters. By enrolling in SPOT Assist Maritime and pressing?the non-emergency ?Help??button on their handheld SPOT Satellite GPS Messengers, each angler was able to summon TowBoatUS assistance and safely return to shore.

Having SPOT Assist Maritime service aboard your boat brings peace of mind. If a motor breaks down or you run out of gas, BoatUS?Towing Services can be summoned by pressing your SPOT unit.

In the first case, which occurred in the early hours of July 4th, Capt. Lee Eckler?of TowBoatUS?Tarpon Springs, FL, received a dispatch from the BoatUS?24-hour call center indicating a mariner was summoning towboat?assistance from a location 25 miles offshore of Anclote?Key ? far beyond cell phone range. With the SPOT and BoatUS?partnership, Capt. Eckler?was immediately provided with precise GPS coordinates as well as name, contact information, type and color of boat, which was identified?as a 17-foot center console. Upon arrival on scene, he found three anglers with a dead engine ?loaded for fishing,? said Eckler.

Alone on the water, there were no Good Samaritans for miles around. Incredulously, Eckler?learned the trio had broken down long before reaching their desired destination ? a fishing spot some 60 miles out in the Gulf. ?It was a textbook SPOT dispatch case. We knew exactly were they were, which greatly speeded response times,? said Eckler.

In the second case, an angler requested towboat?assistance in the early morning hours of July 12th after his 30-foot power catamaran became disabled approximately 52 miles offshore of Tarpon Springs, FL. As with all SPOT cases, especially when contact via cell phone and VHF cannot be made, BoatUS?call center dispatchers also notified the US Coast Guard, which elected to dispatch a helicopter and response boat to verify everyone onboard was safe. Capt. George ?Red? Ingram, also of TowBoatUS Tarpon Springs, responded to the disabled vessel and towed it safely back to the owner?s dock by the early afternoon. A broken lower unit was the source of the angler?s troubles.

?When VHF and cell phones were unavailable, the SPOT satellite-based service was able to summon a towboat?for non-emergency assistance miles offshore,? said BoatUS?Towing Services Vice President Jerry Cardarelli. ?That?s a valuable communications tool to add to any boater?s toolbox.?

BoatUS Towing Services offers towing plans for freshwater lakes and rivers for just $34 annually and just $125 for saltwater, plus BoatUS or BoatUS Angler?membership of $24. SPOT units start at $99.99 plus a $99.99 annual basic SPOT service plan. To add SPOT Assist Maritime to a BoatUS membership, there is a one-time $10 SPOT Link connection fee. SPOT Assist for Maritime is available throughout the continental US as well as coastal British Columbia and select regions of Northern Mexico and the Bahamas.

BoatUS?strongly recommends boaters have a properly registered and GPS enabled DSC-VHF?radio aboard to be?able to hail the closest potential rescuers ? fellow boaters and the US Coast Guard ? in an emergency. For offshore passages, BoatUS?also recommends having an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon). For more information on SPOT Assist Maritime, visit www.findmespot.com/assist

About?BoatUS Towing Services:?Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) is the nation?s leading advocate for recreational boaters providing over half a million members with a wide array of consumer services, including on-the-water towing assistance provided by TowBoatUS and Vessel Assist. Combined, these two towing fleets offer boaters, anglers and sailors the world?s largest network of towing ports with over 300 locations and over 600 towing assistance vessels ? three times larger than the closest competitor.

Insert Coin: Botiful telepresence robot for Android (video)

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

Insert Coin Botiful telepresence robot for Android video

Remote-controlled cameras are nothing new -- heck, some even ride atop robotic vacuums -- but this Android smartphone-powered device delivers quite a bit of versatility in a petite package with a reasonable price tag to boot. Botiful, a "social telepresence robot," serves as a roving platform for your Android smartphone. You can move the handset (and its front-facing camera) up and down as it speeds along any flat surface, responding to commands from someone on the other end of a Skype video chat. Once you connect the device to your Android phone through Bluetooth or USB, you can control its direction from a pop-up window within Skype, letting you position Botiful however you see fit. If your Android phone doesn't have a front-facing camera, you can flip it around to use the rear shooter -- of course, you won't be able to see the display in this configuration, so it won't be ideal for two-way chats. Naturally, this makes the duo a natural choice for surveillance and baby monitoring, but it can also be used to provide a more immersive experience during conference calls or for sending back video from locations that aren't easily accessible, such as the undercarriage of a car.

Designed in a garage in California (no, really), Botiful is already functional, with working software as well. The current configuration requires Skype for control, though an SDK will allow developers to create other control apps for the device -- and who knows, the seemingly capable inventor could release another tool of her own before it's set to hit production later this year. With much of the design already completed, the project sponsor is turning to Kickstarter to raise the funds necessary to launch Botiful to production -- the device could ship as soon as November if it reaches a $90,000 goal before August 22nd. Available in white, blue or red, the remote-controlled rig is currently only compatible with Android, though iOS support may come if funding exceeds a $100k threshold. There's still more than three weeks to go to make your pledge, with a limited number of pre-order slots available for $199 (retail pricing is expected to come in at $299). Hit up the source link below to show your support.

Pop Music All Sounds the Same Nowadays

Your parents are officially correct. Nowadays, pop music all sounds pretty much the same.

Researchers in Spain came to the conclusion after tracking the timbre, pitch and volume of nearly a half-million songs released between 1955 and 2010. They found that in this music dataset ? which spanned rock, pop, hip-hop, metal and electronic genres ? the transitions between chords (a string of notes played at the same time), note combinations, tone and instrument choices all became less and less diverse over time. Meanwhile, the songs grew intrinsically louder. ?

In short, there's been "a progressive homogenization of the musical discourse," Joan Serr? of the Spanish National Research Council and colleagues wrote in a paper published yesterday (July 26) in the journal Scientific Reports. "In particular, we obtain numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations (roughly speaking, chords and melodies) has consistently diminished in the last 50 years."

Whereas in 1960 you might have heard startling chord transitions, unfamiliar instruments and variation in the volume over the course of a song played on the radio, tunes today restrict themselves to the "fashionable" set of chords and note combinations, and maintain a uniformly high volume from beginning to end. [Why Do We Love Music?]

Although no one had previously quantified the trend toward louder music, many in the recording industry colloquially refer to the effect as the "loudness war." More and more these days, when a new album is being digitally mastered, engineers compress and distort the recording until it more frequently peaks at the maximum amplitude, sacrificing sound quality in the process.

Instead of lamenting the deafening dullness of?contemporary pop music, the researchers suggest ways in which their findings can be used to revamp old hits for today's audience.

"An old tune rerecorded using modern techniques that allow for increased loudness and with slightly simpler chord progressions and new instrument sonorities could be perceived as novel and fashionable," Serr? said in a statement.?

US fears Syria preparing for massacre in Aleppo

AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - The United States said it feared a massacre in Aleppo after President Bashar al-Assad's forces launched ground and air bombardments in preparation for a major onslaught against rebels in Syria's commercial capital.

Insurgents targeted army roadblocks and security installations, with both sides avoiding close-quarters warfare in the northern city of 2.5 million people, Syria's biggest urban centre.

The U.S. State Department said credible reports of tank columns moving on Aleppo, along with air strikes by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, represented a serious escalation of Assad's efforts to crush a rebellion that began 16 months ago.

"This is the concern: that we will see a massacre in Aleppo, and that's what the regime appears to be lining up for," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

Troops stationed on the outskirts of the city unleashed barrages of heavy-calibre mortar rounds on the western neighbourhoods of Saladin, al-Sukkari and al-Fardos, while Russian-built MI-25 helicopter gunships struck al-Sakhour in the east with rockets, opposition activists in the city said.

The heavy fighting around Aleppo follows an audacious bomb attack that killed four of Assad's closest lieutenants in Damascus on July 18 and led some analysts to speculate that the government's grip was slipping.

RISING CASUALTIES

In the first reported casualty on Friday, a man of about 60 wearing a traditional white prayer outfit was killed near a park in Saladin. His body was placed in a mosque pending identification.

Thirty-four people were killed in and around Aleppo on Thursday, according to opposition activists.

"The rebels have so far been nimble, and civilians have mostly been the victims of the bombardment," said activist Abu Mohammad al-Halabi, speaking by phone from the city.

"There is lots of internal displacement, and schools have been turned to makeshift shelters that are packed. One shell hitting a school will result in a catastrophe," he said.

"The regime is massing troops and tanks at the entrances of Aleppo, but it seems it is for now content with bombarding the city, with the rebels constantly on the move."

Majed al-Nour, another activist, said rebels attacked a security outpost in the neighbourhood of Bustan al-Joz, which is close to the Aleppo city centre, on Thursday.

"The rebels are present in the east and west of the city, and have a foothold in areas of the centre. The regime forces control the entrances of Aleppo and the main thoroughfares and commercial streets and are bombarding the residential districts that fell into rebel hands," he said.

Nour said tens of thousands of people had fled Aleppo to nearby northern rural regions close to Turkey from which the Syrian army has withdrawn in recent weeks to focus on urban areas where relatively lightly armed rebels have hunkered down.

With U.N. Security Council resolutions for sanctions against Syria vetoed by Russia and China for a third time last week, the United States has said it is stepping up assistance to Syria's fractured opposition, although it remains limited to non-lethal supplies such as communications gear and medical equipment.

Reuters has learned that the White House has crafted a presidential directive, called a "finding," that would authorize greater covert assistance for the rebels, while still stopping short of arming them.

It is not clear whether President Barack Obama has signed the document, and U.S. officials declined to comment on the finding, which is a highly classified authorization for covert activity.

UNITING THE OPPOSITION

A Syrian parliamentarian representing the northern province of Aleppo said on Friday she had defected to Turkey, becoming the first member of the rubberstamp assembly elected in May and dominated by President Bashar al-Assad's Baath Party to defect.

"I have crossed to Turkey and defected from this tyrannical regime ... because of the repression and savage torture against a nation demanding the minimum of rights," Ikhlas al-Badawi told Sky News Arabia.

One of the most senior figures to defect from Assad's inner circle, Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, has put himself forward as someone who could help unify the opposition inside and outside Syria on a plan for a transfer of power.

Tlas, speaking in a newspaper interview in the Saudi city of Jeddah, also said he was looking for support from Saudi Arabia and other powers. "I am discussing with ... people outside Syria to reach a consensus with those inside," Tlas told Thursday's edition of Asharq al-Awsat.

Tlas went on to Turkey and met Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. Turkey, a former ally of Assad and now one of his fiercest critics, has a heavy strategic stake in shaping any post-Assad leadership in neighbouring Syria.

Tlas appeared briefly with Davutoglu at an official guest house but made no statement.

Turkey closed its border posts with Syria on Wednesday to all traffic except Syrian refugees.

Russia, one of the few remaining allies of the authoritarian Assad, whose family has run Syria for 42 years, said calls for him to quit power were hindering efforts to end the conflict.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said such calls, led by the United States, Turkey and other Western and Arab nations, were fanning violence. He reiterated Moscow's contention that support for Syrian rebel groups was tantamount to backing terrorism.

Germany said Russian and Chinese backing for Syria was a big problem. "For this reason we urge them to recognise that the time of the Assad regime is over," Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told German TV.

Netflix chosen by many, but liked by few, says study

18 hrs.

Despite being used by more than 80 percent of the respondents in a new Consumer Reports survey, Netflix video streaming service?doesn't seem to be very well-liked. Users mainly criticized its poor selection and did not see it as a viable option for replacing cable TV and movie rentals.

Over 15,000 people were surveyed by Consumer Reports for the study, and while it doesn't really bear out any new information, it does indicate that people understand the shortcomings of these services.

With Netflix, predictably, it's the selection. Who hasn't tried to find something to watch some night, only to spend it scrolling through endless early-2000s movies and obscure documentaries? One respondent noted that the latest movie he could find with George Clooney in it was 10 years old. Even for $8 a month, that's pretty shabby.

The larger take-away is that there still just?isn't a valid replacement for cable TV and movie rentals. You can go cheap with Netflix or Hulu Plus, but those are far from an all-access pass. You can pay per episode with Vudu or iTunes, but you may end up spending $30 just to watch a single season of a single show.?And independent movie rental places have a great selection and helpful staff, but no one wants to bet they'll be around in a couple years.

For now it seems people are satisfied to pay their money and get their cable, and then switch on the Roku or Apple TV when there's nothing good on. But given the amount of dissatisfaction with any given?part of this arrangement, be it cost, selection or convenience, the next few years may see more people than ever trying to cut the cord. Meanwhile, Netflix will take the abuse and somehow still maintain a stranglehold on its subscribers. Maybe it's Stockholm Syndrome.

New Online CE Course on Epilepsy from HealthForumOnline ...

New Online CE Course on Epilepsy from HealthForumOnline

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) July 24, 2012

HealthForumOnline (HFO), a nationally-approved (APA, ASWB, NBCC, PSNA, CA-BBS) provider of online continuing education (CE) for psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals is pleased to announce a new course to HFO?s extensive online CE resource library entitled The Excitable Brain: What Every Clinician Should Know About Epilepsy.

An estimated 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy. In the United States alone, approximately 3 million people are affected with epilepsy or seizures with an annual cost of approximately million in direct and indirect costs. In fact, it is estimated that 10% of Americans will experience a seizure in their lifetime. Although epilepsy has a major impact on public health, this disorder rarely receives public attention or the amount of research funding necessary to make advances in prevention and treatment (e.g., Reuber & Mayor, 2012; Trevathan, 2011).

Since epilepsy is not a disease but a symptom of multiple and various causes, the chances of having patients with either seizures or epilepsy are great. Frequently, clinicians see patients with brain tumors, stroke, traumatic brain injury, genetic disorders, and dementia, all which may cause seizures or epilepsy. With the growing number of soldiers returning from war with traumatic brain injury and with the aging population in the United States, the number of patients who have epilepsy is expected to increase in the upcoming decades (e.g., Salinsky, et al., 2011).

In the epilepsy context, misdiagnosis is common and places patients at an increased risk for repeated seizures and resultant cognitive and neurobehavioral changes. Moreover, as these patients are often misdiagnosed with psychiatric illness or attentional disorders before a getting a proper epilepsy diagnosis, mental health professionals can play a pivotal role in diagnostic redirection and the behavior management of disease-related symptoms and stress.

Psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and other allied health professionals can chose from HFO?s 19 categories of continuing education (CE) topics related to health psychology and behavioral medicine (i.e., ethics, cancer adaptation, women?s health, cultural diversity, eating disorders, reproduction/sexuality, aging/gerontology, pediatric behavioral medicine, assessment, chemical dependency, chronic/acute illness, clinical intervention, group therapy, infectious disease, long-term care, neuropsychology, pain management, spirituality/mindfulness, LGBT issues) containing over 80 online CE courses that are fast, convenient and cost-effective.

Zynga stock tanks after weak 2Q

NEW YORK (AP) ? Zynga's stock is tanking after the online game maker reported a loss in the second quarter, with adjusted earnings and revenue below Wall Street's already low expectations.

Zynga Inc. said Wednesday that it lost $22.8 million, or 3 cents per share, in the April-June quarter. That's down from earnings of $1.4 million a year ago when it was still privately held. Its per-share results last year were at breakeven.

Adjusted earnings in the latest quarter were a penny per share, below expectations of 5 cents per share.

Zynga's revenue grew 19 percent to $332 million. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had expected $342.8 million.

Zynga had a lot riding on this quarter. Investors had been punishing its stock because of worries about declining user numbers.

But the results provided no relief. Zynga's stock sank $2.09, or 41 percent, to $2.99 in after-hours trading after the results came out. The stock had closed up 16 cents at $5.08 during the regular session.

Facebook's stock also declined after Zynga's announcement. The bad news from Zynga could hurt Facebook, which reports its earnings on Thursday. Most of Zynga's games are played on Facebook's website.

Zynga also said Wednesday that its chairman and CEO, Mark Pincus, became the beneficial owner of more than 50 percent of the company's voting power through stock he owns.
