Attention Business Women, Learning to Play Golf Can Be a Business ...

Throughout history, many cultures have left evidence of stick-and-ball games which are now considered distant ancestors to modern golf and several other sports, but the origin of modern golf is often debated today. Many believe the Scottish can be credited with the one thing that sets golf apart from most other stick-and-ball games ? the hole!

At Saint Andrews in Scotland, the first known golf course was created as early as the 15th century. It featured only 11 holes, golfers would play to the end of the property and then turn around and play their way back for a total of 22 holes. The 18-hole course used today reportedly originated in 1764 after the Saint Andrews course was shortened to 9 holes.

Mary, Queen of Scots may have been the very first woman to take up golf, it was during her reign the Saint Andrews course was built and it is rumored Mary?s habit of calling her assistants ?cadets? inspired the term ?caddy?.

According to Golf Digest, almost 32,000 golf courses were operating in 2005, most prominently in English speaking countries. Scotland, New Zealand and Australia were calculated to have the most courses in relation to their population, however almost half of the courses they recorded were in America.

Talented professional golfers and tournament competitors come from all walks of life; there are no age, race or gender restrictions, contrary to the old acronym ?Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden?. Like Mary ?Queen of Scots? Stuart, women from all over the world have taken up golf as a profession, as a hobby, and even for fitness.

The sport of golf has often been utilized in business as a tool to test a new business associate or prospective employee, an opportunity to get to know them and also to see whether the person can handle stress and relax. It is an opportunity for a person to impress their new associate or future employer, not only by the skill with which they play the game, but also by their manners. Some universities even offer golf classes for students in business related fields.

Playing golf can be a great asset for any woman, for business, for pleasure, or for health. Since 1811, with the creation of the Musselburgh Golf Club in Scotland, many local, national, and international clubs for women golfers have been founded worldwide, drawing women together in friendly competition and camaraderie. The popularity of Women?s Golf can only continue to grow with the advent of many successful female golfers to inspire and encourage a world of women and young ladies alike.

German Pubwebs Take on YouTube, Hulu with VOD Service

COLOGNE, Germany - Germany's public broadcasters are uniting to take on YouTube and Hulu announcing plans to set up their own VOD platform as a bulwark against international competitors.

German pubwebs ARD and ZDF today confirmed their VOD strategy, which will see the channels' commercial arms - ZDF Enterprises and WDR Mediagroup - jointly set up an online streaming site similar to Hulu or YouTube. The networks, which are financed by German taxpayers, already provide catch-up versions of many of their programs for free online but for only seven days after broadcast. The proposed new service would be a financed by a combination of advertising and paid downloads, with the broadcasters splitting revenues with producers and rights holders such as Bavaria, Studio Hamburg, Telepool and Beta Film. If all goes according to plan, according to ZDF director Markus Schachter, the VOD service will go online next year.

The plan is controversial. Many do not think public broadcasters should profit from programs that viewers have already paid for through license fees. ARD and ZDF could also have problems getting their VOD service past Germany's media watchdogs. The German cartel office has already rejected a similar plan by commercial broadcasters RTL Television and ProSiebenSat.1 to set up a common online platform for all German TV programming. RTL and ProSieben have challenged the ruling. Public and private networks have invited their competitors to join their respective platforms but so far none have taken the bait.

Getting Your Dog to Sit on Command? The Easy, Fun Way | Home-Family ...

The easiest way you may ever save your dog?s life is by teaching the ?sit? command. Happily, this is an easy and fun command to teach and, as I mentioned, this command could save your dog?s life if your pet learns it well. I won?t belabor the point, but I recall my shepherd as an adolescent bounding toward the street and almost charging into deadly traffic. My sharply uttered ?sit? brought its butt right to the ground in the nick of time. You get the point.

There are two basic methods to reliably teach your dog to sit. If you have a puppy, start training at around 8 weeks. Be sure to set a training schedule and stick to it as well as you can. Always do your training routines the same, and be prepared to repeat the same routine again and again with patience and firm gentleness until your dog begins to understand. And, of course, give lots of praise followed by an occasional treat to reward proper behavior.

When running your dog through training routines, try to keep everything the same and predictable. This is important to dogs as it makes them feel safe and secure. Again, never lose patience and be willing to repeat as many times as necessary until your dog catches on.

Method 1

Catch your pet?s attention. Say its name and present a treat. The way to do this is to hold the treat a little in front and just above the animal?s nose. Now, slowly move the treat up and backward over its head. You dog will try to watch the treat, and as it follows the motion over its head, it will naturally lower its rear end into a sitting position. As the dog assumes the correct position, you utter the command ?sit,? and offer a piece of kibble as a reward.

Now, you will need to repeat this. You might set a 10 or 15 minute training period each day. As your puppy begins to understand, you will find that your dog will respond to the hand motion and you can begin rewarding with praise instead of a treat. In all training, you want to wean the dog away from treat rewards. Plan on spending a couple of weeks with this for reliably consistent obedience.

Method 2

The second method is not so different from the first. However, you will begin by placing your dog on your left. I also suggest that you have it on a leash. With this method, you hold the treat in front of your pet, say ?sit,? and then press gently but firmly down on its hind end. The dog will sit, and then you give it lots of praise followed by the treat. If you have put a leash on your dog?highly recommended?then as you say ?sit,? you give a gentle, upward pull on the leash as you press down on its hind quarters.

Does Your Business Plan Include Risk Management?

Did your business plan really look at all your threats? Planning often glosses over the risks and emergencies and assumes they will never happen. Failure to cover some risks couls cause loss of the business and even the owners home

Discover how to identify and manage risk in your business because this always needs to be your first step in business planning. That is why traditional business plans start with a SWOT analysis which is great. Your assess your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

I am always amazed at the way these plans typically gloss over those risks or threats that could cost you $250,000 and upwards, take your family home or even send you to jail but they emphasise the strengths and opportunities because they are written to impress the bank manager or investors rather than to be a basis for both protecting and growing your business

BUT

Getting it right and protecting yourself is so easy.

You need to look at what you actually do ? EVERYTHING YOU DO! You should look at every activity in your business and assess the risk and make sure that you include whether you or you staff can accidentally break the law and land you with big fines.

Take time to consider what the liklihood is that you or your staff could ?stuff up? and be realistic about the consequences. Your family would definately consider that losing their home because of a fine you or your business incurred rates at catastrophic.

No one is immune??

One multimillionaire client thought things were ?bullsh*t? until I pointed out that the consequence to him was probably jail ? he went white and got the proper licences and staff training that day.

A fishing company client of mine had implemented very good systems. They identified that a crew member on one boat could not swim so they bought him a self inflating life jacket. Even though he signed off that he would wear it at all times on deck, he didn?t want to get it dirty and refused to wear it. The skipper of the vessel was charged with manslaughter when the crew member fell overboard and drowned because he had not enforced the wearing of safety equipment. He had a $350,000 fine and is also being sued by the family under civil legislation.

The weeknesses and threats in your business plan should include all the risks that could potentially happen.

Planning to manage all those risks and threats is the secret to protecting your family home and your business. And you actually USE your plan and the feedback process really brings your staff on board to create a real team

Thankfully you can fix this easily when you build a management system with me.

You need to identify ALL your activities, threats and weaknesses you may choose to concentrate mainly on safety or just quality which is mainly that super important customer satisfaction so that you can get certification but I really encourage you to use the same management tools for marketing, financial, human resources and any other risk you have.

You need to carefully identify your problems then identify the resources you need to manage them, you are empowered to develop truly functional business planning.

AND it stays slimline if you only have controls where they are needed instead of the typical mountain of paper that people so often wrongly associate with having a good system in place

May I ask if you ever feel frustrated by the time than you currently spend sorting out things that go wrong or showing someone yet again how to do something the way you want it done?

You get rid of these petty irritations and you control your risk when you build a simple and effective plan and management system.

Setting up a simple and effective management system actually takes less time than most business owners lose with all those frustrating interruptions.

So protect your business and your family with straightforward, no jargon, low paper business planning.

Poor passenger communications by CTA was Tuesday's key issue - not ...

Though I focused on the Forrest Claypool appointment Wednesday, I haven't forgotten about the Brown Line "mishap" (it wasn't a derailment!) during Tuesday morning's rush hour. Though it appears the Tribune has forgotten it.? At least it wasn't mentioned in Wednesday's print edition, not even a tiny sidebar with the page 1 coverage of our mayor-elect's appointment of Claypool as CTA president. I will wait for the NTSB report to explain the details of what really happened. And I won't...

Sony Enters Tablet Market with S1, S2 for Autumn Release

TOKYO ? Sony announced its long-awaited entry into the tablet computer market on Tuesday, with two models ? currently named S1 and S2 ? to be released worldwide in the autumn.

Both tablets will have Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity and run Google?s Android 3.0 operating system. Google?s Andy Rubin was on stage to demonstrate the new devices.

The S1 has a 9.4-inch screen and is wedge-shaped to give the feeling of holding a magazine, according to Sony?s Kunimasa Suzuki, vice president of the company?s consumer electronics division.

Designed for home use, the S1 will also work as a remote control for Sony home entertainment products, and allow for the streaming of movies to television sets. It will also feature a front and rear camera, and have 512MB of RAM and 32GB of memory.

The S2 has two 5.5-inch screens and the device folds up like Nintendo?s DS portable consoles. It will be compatible with some PlayStation games, and when being used as a console the upper screen will display game-play while the lower one will work as a touch-screen controller.

To drive the point of its handy size home, Suzuki produced the S2 from his jacket pocket when unveiling it at the event.

Suzuki, one of the "Four Musketeers" appointed by Howard Stringer to revitalize Sony, declared at this year?s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that Sony would be number two in the tablet market by next year, despite not yet having a product in the space.

Sony didn?t announce pricing or launch dates at the event.

New York Backs Off Rules On Risky Kids' Games

Hazardous to health?

It's hard to be a kid these days.

There are so many risks ? from creeps on the Internet to calorie overload from junk food. But are wiffleball, kickball and tetherball really so dangerous?

Well, the New York State Department of Health seemed to think so. It put those games and some other summer mainstays on a list of activities that could push many kids' summer recreation programs into classification as camps, which are subject to state regulation. Now, though, after objections, the state is reconsidering.

?

Our pals over at the Two-Way wrote about this yesterday, and today I dug around and found some letters about the change. The PDF was a little flaky, but I could read them with Google Quick View.

I learned something new in the process. The bureaucratic term of art here is "nonpassive recreational activities with a significant risk of injury," or NPRASRI. If a program has at least two organized group activities and one of them is an NPRASRI, then the program would have been treated as a summer day camp.

How the health officials came up with the risk assessments is a real head-scratcher. Bocce, tug of war and sack races were classified as activities with no significant risk. Horseshoes, capture the flag and "tag (all varieties)" are risky.

I don't know about you, but, given the choice, I'd rather have someone drop a horseshoe on my foot than a bocce ball. And don't get me started on the hazards of sack races.

Anyway, the requirements were trotted out to improve oversight of camps in the wake of a 2009 law. But the Health Department is going back to the drawing board.

Spokeswoman Claudia Hutton told New York's Daily News, "We are coming up with a new list and we are going to do it in a more sensible fashion." That task should be done next month.

Photographers' Focus Was On Other Side Of Lens

I think people in war zones sometimes speak more freely to photographers than they do to reporters. Microphones and notepads can make people conscious of what they're saying. But photographers can talk to them as people, not names in their stories. Photographers ask things like, "Do you have children? Do you like Katy Perry?" instead of, "What political faction do you belong to?"

A couple of great photographers died in a rocket attack of government forces on Misrata, Libya, this week.

Chris Hondros of New York had also worked in Kosovo, Angola, Afghanistan, Iraq and Liberia for Getty Images. Mr. Hondros was 41, and told colleagues on a rocky 20-hour boat ride into Misrata that he had recently gotten engaged.

"I don't want to be a really old dad," he said.

Doctors Without Borders had a remembrance on their website that said, "Chris never just took photos, he was always thinking about who was on the other side of his lens and what they were experiencing. He wanted his photographs to make a difference."

Tim Hetherington was 40, from Birkenhead, England. He had also seen conflicts around the world, but as his collaborator, Sebastian Junger, told ABC News, "Tim with his camera wanted to understand life. Life includes war, unfortunately. He would say, 'Look, war is terrible. Terrible things happen in war. But people also love really profoundly in war and they laugh in war.' "

Mr. Junger and Tim Hetherington made the film Restrepo, about a year in the life of a U.S. infantry regiment in a deadly forward base in Afghanistan. It won this year's Sundance award for best documentary.

As rockets rained down this week, Tim Hetherington sent a message over Twitter: "In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO."

That last remark poses an uncomfortable question: If NATO has pledged to try to keep Moammar Gadhafi from slaughtering his own people, where is NATO while civilians in Misrata are being massacred in front of the watching world?

The most conscientious Western war reporters and photographers are usually modest in remembering risks. Those of us who've reported wars understand that a bullet or blast may catch up with us. But most of us will live to go home, eat well and sleep safely. A few of us will get recognition and rewards. The people besieged in Misrata today are imperiled and hungry. They may feel abandoned.

Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros tried to take photos to pierce our hearts and move us to care. It would honor them to pay attention not only to their pictures, but also to the brave, grieving and embattled people that they died to show us.

The company says that in terms of emerging devices (this includes non-phone wireless connections), 1.6 million connected devices were added to the network in the quarter.

Included in this category are what AT&T refers to as embedded computing devices, which are tablets, netbooks and laptops. AT&T says that more than 7 million connected devices have been added to the network over the past six quarters. The total number of emerging devices, including postpaid and prepaid embedded computing devices, connected to the AT&T network ? both for consumers and businesses is exceeds 12 million, says the company.

In Q4 2010, AT&T added nearly $2 million devices, but this number could be higher because of the holiday retail season at the end of the year.

Business users and consumers can use AT&T wireless connection plans for more than 100 specialty devices, including eReaders, netbooks, digital photo frames, personal navigation devices, telematics, home security monitoring and smart grid devices.

AT&T will support a number of new connected device this year including a deal with Ford Motor Company to wirelessly connect the Ford Focus Electric, Ford?s first all-electric passenger car. AT&T will also provide the network connection for Acer?s first 4G tablet, the Acer Iconia Tab A501.

One Year After Spill, Widow of Rig Worker Continues to Struggle with Loss

Wednesday marks the first anniversary of the BP well explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. The eruption led to the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Beyond the cost to the environment, there was a tremendous human loss ? 11 workers were killed in the initial explosion. For 15 years, tool pusher, Jason Anderson, worked for the company Transocean ?"- a contractor BP hired to operate the well. Host Michel Martin speaks with his wife, Shelley Anderson, about her family's continued struggle to cope with the loss.

MICHEL MARTIN, host:

I'm Michel Martin, and this is TELL ME MORE, from NPR News.

Coming up, we hear from a daughter of Malcolm X about a controversial new biography of the late black nationalist leader. A conversation with Ilyasah Shabazz is later in the program.

But, first, today marks the first anniversary of the largest oil spill in U.S. history, started by an explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Two-hundred million gallons of oil polluted the waters and shores of the Gulf Coast. And the environmental and financial devastation is still being felt there.

The enormity of the damage, though, often seems to overshadow how it began, with an explosion that cost the lives of 11 workers and injured 17 others. Their families are struggling to recover from the loss. We wanted to check in with a member of one of those families to find out how they are doing. Yesterday we reached Shelly Anderson, who lost her husband Jason aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig.

Shelly joined us from her home in Midfield, Texas. Also on the line with us was Shelly Anderson's attorney Ernest Cannon. He was at his home office in Stephenville, Texas. And I began by telling Mrs. Anderson how very sorry we all are for her loss.

Ms. SHELLY ANDERSON: It's OK. I've learned in the past year that it doesn't matter what somebody says, you can't normally just make it any worse than what it already is. You can't say something wrong to me if you're using your heart and you don't mean to say something mad, it doesn't hurt. Not as much as it already does.

MARTIN: Well, thank you for that. Do you mind if I ask you how you first found out that something was wrong?

Ms. ANDERSON: I saw it on TV the first time. My friend called me and asked me if I had been watching the news, that they were talking about Jason's rig on TV and that she was positive it was Jason's rig. She made me watch it again and that's when they started saying the name of the rig. But it took several hours for Transocean to call and let us know that anything had happened. We called the 800 numbers they told us to call, and all we could get was voice messages, leaving messages, waiting for people to call us back. It took a while.

MARTIN: How long after the actual explosion was it before you finally found out that something very terrible had happened from the company? How long was it before they actually confirmed what you had heard in media reports?

Ms. ANDERSON: All we had heard from the company was that there was an explosion and that the rig had been evacuated. We didn't know if Jason had made it off of the rig. We tried calling cell phones and the rig number was busy. We watched the TV. We saw one man being lifted by the helicopter from the baskets. We were just hoping to catch a glimpse of Jason. We called the hospitals all along the coast. It was a while. It was - I think it - I don't - that time frame is all mushy in my brain. I don't remember the exact time that they called and told me that Jason was one of the 11 missing.

MARTIN: Have you been getting any help from the company since then? For example, did they help with funeral arrangements and have you been receiving any support in the year since this happened?

Ms. ANDERSON: Um...

MARTIN: I'm sorry. Take your time.

Ms. ANDERSON: I think just because somebody brought it up to me, but I don't remember now, I think that Transocean might have offered to pay for Jason's funeral expenses, but I did. I paid for Jason's funeral. I paid for everything about it, other than donations from family and friends. I wrote those checks for all of that.

MARTIN: And what about since then? Is there, forgive me for having to ask, but has there been any insurance? Is there compensation when something like this, you know, happens? A death benefit?

Ms. ANDERSON: Jason had a life insurance policy that he paid for, that we got most of. There was a little bit of it that we weren't able to receive the check for just yet. Some things can get complicated because he did die at sea and there is no death certificate. So some things can get a little complicated in that area. Transocean has continued Jason's paychecks, which allow us to have insurance, but I have no idea when they're going to stop that.

I've heard that they stopped other people's. I've heard that they have - that they were going to stop ours after the anniversary and that last month would've been the last check, but I don't know for sure when it stops.

Mr. ERNEST CANNON (Attorney): Shelly, this is Ernest Cannon, would you tell Michel about our meeting with Transocean's lawyer when we tried to discuss with him how long you might receive Jason's wages or to come to some accommodation or some settlement with you? Would you tell her about Transocean's lawyer's attitude that evening?

Ms. ANDERSON: That evening, when we met with that Transocean lawyer there, he -I was just trying to tell them how much Jason meant to me and what Jason meant to me. And he didn't want to listen. Sorry. He didn't want to listen. He didn't want to listen to anything that I said. And he stood up and he walked out. And all I was trying to do was tell him about Jason.

There are lawyers from BP, Mr. Feinberg, Mr. Rozen, they're willing to listen. And they've reached out and they're ready to listen. But the one lawyer that I talked to from Transocean, I tried to tell him a Jason story and he didn't want to hear any part of it.

MARTIN: Mr. Cannon, were you there for this? Were you present?

Mr. CANNON: Yes, I was.

MARTIN: May I ask you what happened there?

Mr. CANNON: Yes. I had arranged a meeting for two purposes with Transocean's lawyer. One was so that my other client, who was injured, Kayla Palloway(ph) and Shelly could tell Transocean's lawyer how they felt. Jason, Shelly and Kayla were all extremely loyal to Transocean. So we set up the meeting for that purpose and I wanted to talk to them about settling the claims.

When Kayla had been - Shelly started telling the lawyer how they felt, he said he wasn't going to sit and listen to them be critical of Transocean and that he would see that, in so many words, that he would see that they paid for their insulting attitude about telling how they felt about Transocean abandoning them in their time of need when they had been loyal to them.

MARTIN: Well, can I ask you about that, Mr. Cannon? I'll direct this question to you. I'm going to give Shelly a minute. I understand from her that the company has continued his paycheck and has also continued the insurance coverage. What else are you looking for at this point? What else would you like to see happen?

Mr. CANNON: Well, in Ms. Anderson's case, when we had the meeting with Transocean's lawyer, I asked him how long they would continue to pay and as I understand it, am I correct, Shelly, that his response was that he thought through this April? In other words, that the payments of his salary would now end?

Ms. ANDERSON: After the anniversary. That's the way I understood him to say it.

Mr. CANNON: That's the way I understood it also. We would like for Transocean and BP and Halliburton and Cameron and the responsible parties to allow Shelly to have a case for us to take depositions, for us to see what caused the accident, for us to explain what her damages are, and to have an assessment just as we do in every other case in the country like this. And if we need to, go to court and try it to a jury and see what a jury will decide that Shelly's damages are.

Transocean particularly, and the other defendants have filed lawsuits against Shelly and the other people to keep them from having a case and to limit them to a very small amount.

MARTIN: What is the grounds there? If it's not - what is the basis of their suit? What's the allegation?

Mr. CANNON: Their suit against Shelly - they said, Shelly, the day after the Transocean CEO came to her kitchen and hugged her and said he'd take care of her, the next day, he had his company lawyers file suit against her, under what's called a limitation of liability law. Transocean's taking advantage of a 160-year-old law that technically tie these people up forever.

What their program is is they're trying to make it so difficult - as you can see the shape Shelly's in even a year later - they're trying to make her give up and go away and they won't have to pay them damage.

MARTIN: Now I understand that that's your interpretation of their intention, but I need to know, what is the allegation that they are making?

Ms. ANDERSON: They're trying to say that Jason died offshore is not the same as Jason dying onshore and on land. And that his life is not worth it to them if he's offshore. If he was on land, it would be a totally different situation and the law would not even apply. But because they say he died at sea and offshore, he's not worth as much. He's expendable.

MARTIN: Well, I appreciate your being willing to talk to us on such a difficult day, such a difficult time. But before I let you go, what would make it better? Is there anything that would make it better?

Ms. ANDERSON: Yeah. Get him to come home. That would make it all be better. Beyond that, I don't have an answer for that question. I have no idea. I've never lost a husband before. Never had to raise two kids by myself before. I don't know what would make it better other than just bring him home.

MARTIN: Shelly, I'm so sorry. Shelly Anderson is a mother of two. She's the wife of Jason Anderson who was one of the 11 workers who died after the explosion at the BP operated well in the Gulf of Mexico. She was with us from her home in Midfield, Texas. Ernest Cannon is her attorney. He was with us from his home office in Stephenville, Texas. I thank you both so much for joining us. Shelly, our thoughts are with you and with your family.

Ms. ANDERSON: I appreciate your prayers. That - that's what lifts me up every day.

Mr. CANNON: Michel, thank you.

MARTIN: We wanted to give Transocean an opportunity to respond to the claims made by Shelly Anderson and her attorney. So we reached out to Transocean. A representative for the company, Lou Colasuonno provided this statement.

Mr. LOU COLASUONNO (Representative, Transocean): Nothing is more important to Transocean than its people and their families. I mean, it's a core value of the company and a driving principle behind our efforts to reach amicable financial agreements with those who lost loved ones. And we're doing that while we continue to provide full pay and benefits to those people. And today, in fact, we're going to gather with the families and to privately commemorate the loss of those courageous men one year ago today.

I would like to set the record straight, Transocean is, in no way, no form suing widows and children who were affected by this accident. Any assertion to the contrary is simply untrue.

MARTIN: That was Lou Colasuonno, a spokesman for Transocean. In a moment we get the perspective of a reporter who's been covering this issue. Please stay with us as we continue the conversation on TELL ME MORE from NPR News. I'm Michel Martin.

There's a lot of buzz surrounding Jake Gyllenhaal's new movie role.

PHOTOS: Stars who are going bald

After all, the 30-year-old actor shaved his head for End of Watch, a police drama costarring Michael Pena. Though filming doesn't begin until July, Gyllenhaal and Pena, 35, shot promos for the movie in L.A. last week.

PHOTOS: Bad male manes

This isn't the first time Gyllenhaal has lost his locks for a role; in 2005, he shaved his head to play Marine Anthony Swofford in Jarhead.

ThinkGeek?s iCade Turns iPad into Retro Arcade Cabinet

The iCade cabinet will make you feel like a giant living in the 1970s

Remember the iCade? Sure you do. It was ThinkGeek?s 2010 April Fool gag, a tiny tabletop arcade machine which used the iPad as its screen. Now, just over a year later, the iCade is real, and can be pre-ordered for $100 at ThinkGeek?s store.

Along with the price drop (the joke unit was $150) there have been some changes to the imaginary specs. Now the iCade connects to the iPad by Bluetooth, not through the dock connector. It also has more buttons ? eight instead of just two ? but it keeps a coin slot so you can feed it with quarters.

But best of all is that ThinkGeek has teamed up with Atari. The legendary game company recently released Atari?s Greatest Hits, which brings 100 classic titles to the iPhone and iPad. These games have built-in support for the iCade?s joystick and buttons. ThinkGeek has also released an API so any developer can bake support into their own games. This rather practical addition raises the iCade from mere novelty to actually pretty awesome.

So popular is the iCade that, despite only being available for pre-order, it is already back ordered. Thus, you?ll have to wait for the second batch. International buyers will have an even longer wait, as worldwide shipping will only start once the iCade is in stock. My $100 is ready.

Victory Over Cancer: Leukemia Survivor Campaigning for a Cure

DOWNINGTOWN, PA ? Twelve years ago, at age fifteen, Berry Woodrow McLaughlin fainted, hit her head, and was rushed to the hospital. Little did she know, the fainting spell was much bigger than a bump on the head. That day, she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and was checked in to Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia to begin her three-year stint of chemotherapy.

As a young teenager, Berry faced a daunting diagnosis with incredible courage and came out victorious. Now, as she approaches her 12th year of remission from ALL she is campaigning to become the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s 2011 Woman of the Year.

?For me, this is not simply a charity cause, it is my life as I endeavor to protect the lives of others,? Berry said. ?I have set a goal to raise $100,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.?

Berry brings the same determination, positive attitude, and focus that she used to beat cancer with her to work, where she is the administrative assistant at Victory Brewing Company. Because of her dedication and commitment to her cause, Victory Brewing Company has joined her mission, signing on as the Presenting Sponsor of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s 2011 Man & Woman of the Year.

In an effort to help Berry raise funds for her campaign, Victory has offered up a raffle item to become a Brewer for a Day. Victory fans and beer enthusiasts can enter to win a once-in-a-lifetime experience for $20. The winner and a friend will come to Victory?s brewhouse, don the brewer blue overalls, and pitch in to create a batch of beer. At the conclusion of the day, the winner can invite five friends to enjoy a special beer dinner at the brewpub.

?Berry?s dynamic energy, attitude, and commitment make her a winner on a daily basis,? Bill Covaleski, Victory co-Founder and President, said.? ?We at Victory are supporting Berry and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in hopes of motivating others to join the fight to cure all blood cancers, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.?

Diets For Quick Weight Loss ? A Few Things To Consider :: Loose ...

by Erin Eckhart on April 20, 2011 in Health and Fitness

Diets For Quick Weight Loss will always be popular. People will always be on the lookout for the next great thing to help them slim down. Science has determined that many of these fad diets can be unhealthy or ineffective. Take care to properly research a diet and see if it fits a few simple guidelines.

Any claims that rapid weight loss will occur without much effort is false. You want to make changes that will improve your overall health, and a few key things can make that happen while dieting.

Don?t Shut Down Your Fat Burning Furnace

In order to keep your fat burning abilities alive, you need to feed your body. Your metabolism is what allows you to process food efficiently and eliminate. Restricting the calories you eat will slow this to a halt, and you will actually hold water and fat.

BMR calculators are available online and will help you determine your best caloric intake amount. The more active you are, the more calories you need to consume. You can also determine the right amount to maintain steady 1 or 2 pound per week weight loss. Body builders use this to gain weight when trying to get bigger muscles.

Get Moving!

One pound a week is easy with proper eating, two or three can be done with good exercise.

Many diets for quick weight loss don?t include any form of physical exercise. They encourage you to lose weight rapidly by restricting calories. While that can lead to a quick initial weight loss, the weight will come back when you start to eat normally again, perhaps even more so. Plus, quick weight loss diets don?t provide the same health benefits as a balanced diet and exercise.

Experts agree that the best exercise routines include interval cardio and strength training. If you suffer from excess stress in your life, you should also consider yoga and meditation for stretching and relaxation. Three to five hours of cardio exercise plus one or two hours of strength training per week are enough to make a huge impact on your body shape and fitness level.

Exercise provides many health benefits. It lifts your spirits, improves your sleep, keeps you strong and lean, and improves your balance. It also protects your heart and wards off metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes. These are perks that diets for quick weight loss alone cannot do for you.

No More Starving Yourself

Liquid diets? Uhm, no thanks! These Hollywood tricks seem to be effective, but the overall toll on your health is not worth it! Also, you cannot maintain a diet like that for long, and you will puff right back up once you go back to solids.

Don?t do this kind of thing to yourself and become a grouch with sleeping issues and a temper! You deserve to treat your body the right way, the results will follow.

To maintain a healthy weight, your body needs to be healthy. Feed it right, move it often, and give it the hydration it needs to perform at its peak.

So you are planning a relocation to another part of the state, or perhaps across the country. Well, you will need some help finding the right real estate agent to help you find the perfect home in your new location, especially if you are house hunting before you move.

Here are some suggestions on finding that right real estate agent to help you with your relocation to your new home. Since you are leaving an area you know and moving to an area you probably do not, having an agent you can trust to help you find your new home is critical. You will have lots to worry about and coordinate with your move, and working with an agent who does not understand your issues, nor care, is not going to be helpful.

I strongly recommend working with an agent who is also a Realtor, not someone who is not. A Realtor is a real estate professional who is a member in good standing of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and, thereby, adheres to a Code of Ethics. Not all agents are Realtors, although many people use the terms interchangeably.

If you can, use someone who has been referred to you by someone you know and trust. If you don?t have a referral, I recommend first checking the Council of Residential Specialists (CRS) database for someone in the area you are moving too. Why? Well, agents with the CRS designation (only about 4% of all Realtors have this certification) have to take a series of advanced courses (most are 2-day) on a range of topics relevant to the real estate profession (e.g., seller and buyer strategies, technology, working with referrals, financial issues, marketing, etc.) They must also meet fairly rigorous production requirements during a given period in order to be certified. So not only do you know they have significant education but they have experience in handling a number of transactions. Individuals with the GRI designation are also strong professionals. Do not make your decision, however, based only on the certification or on the name of the brokerage the Realtor works for.

If you do not have a recommendation or referral (probably true in most cases), do some research on the Realtor you are interested in to find out what you can about them ? look at their website, find out what professional certifications they have, what services they can offer you, and make sure they work in the area(s) you are interested in or moving to.

The next step is to conduct a phone interview with the person you are interested in (If you leave a voice mail about why you are calling and it takes a long time for the agent to return the call, i.e., the next day or worse, I?d be very concerned about their responsiveness, which is not a good sign for the future). Ask them to tell you what relocation experience they have, either personally and/or in handling buyers moving to their area. If they haven?t moved some distance themselves, at least they should have had experience with relocating buyers. If not, it may be difficult for them to understand your issues and effectively work with and assist you.

It is important to feel a level of comfort in speaking with the person you are interviewing, and a personal chemistry, but that?s not all. Do you feel that they are truly interested in helping you? How do you know? What are the specific services they provide relocating buyers? How well do they know the community (ies) you are interested in? What can they tell you about the community as well as the state of the market there ? is it a buyer?s or a seller?s market? Do they offer a customized relocation package? Are they willing to screen properties for you, based on your criteria, not just set you up on a website (while it is important that you have access to on-line properties in the area you are moving to, you don?t know the area and your agent should help you screen properties as s/he learns more about what you want and need). You should also find out if this agent can also provide you with resources to do your own research (e.g., schools, crime).

It is important to understand an agent?s responsiveness to you, and the ability and willingness to help you late at night, on the weekend, etc. Since you aren?t local and may be in a different time zone, much of the communication will be by telephone, email and fax. Questions will arise that need quick answers, and problems will occur, so you must be able to get in touch with your agent quickly, and he or she needs to respond fast. Do they get emails forwarded to their cell phone? Can they provide you with all the numbers to reach them quickly if you need to (believe it or not, some agents do not give out their cell phone numbers and expect you to leave voice mail in their office ? how often do they check?). What about email ? just because they have an address does not mean they use it, and I know this from personal experience. You both need to agree on the most effective means to communicate and what works best for you.

In all likelihood you will be making a house hunting trip in advance of your actual move. Find out how your agent will handle that. Will the agent set up an effective and substantial tour of homes and neighborhoods for you to see before you arrive? Will your agent show you properties you want to see, as well as those that they feel, based on their knowledge, are important for you to see as well? Is an itinerary provided in advance? Will you be kept posted on any changes (e.g, the home you fell in love with on-line and planned to see now has an accepted offer)? Is the agent comfortable and willing to make last minute changes based on your schedule, changes in the housing that is available, ruling out areas you find you don?t like, etc. so you don?t waste time?

These are the most important issues you should consider as you are searching for the right real estate agent to assist you with your relocation. Don?t make a hasty decision ? your relocation is too important, and the right agent can really make a difference.
