Palin for President Group Running Ads in Iowa Means She's Back In? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Thought Sarah Palin wasn't in the quest for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012? Technically, you would be correct. However, a pro-Palin online organization called Conservatives4Palin has bought $6,500 worth of airtime in Iowa, according to CNN, home of the first-in-the-nation caucus, literally begging the former Alaska governor to enter the race.

Do the ads mean the former presidential hopeful -- but never a committed or declared hopeful -- is in the process of changing her mind about running? Not necessarily. The Palin camp has issued no comment on the ads, although it is often noted the former governor is unconventional in her methods when conducting political campaigns. She is not known to be affiliated with the organization. And with deadlines on filings for primary and caucus ballot inclusion already past in many states, her candidacy would struggle with mobilizing voters in a write-in campaign, never an easy task.

But Palin announced in early October that she would not seek the Republican nomination, something many believed was a sure thing since in her future after her failed 2008 campaign for the vice presidency. Months of speculation throughout the year, much of it generated by Palin's own coyness with the press with regard to what she was planning, ended with a statement and announcements on conservative talk radio and on Fox News, where she is also employed as a contributor.

So what do Conservatives4Palin hope to accomplish? Given what an uphill battle it would be for the former Alaska governor to actually win the nomination, it isn't known if the ads aren't simply a concerted effort at wishful thinking or if they actually believe that a candidacy might be mounted via social media. Or perhaps they wish to convince Palin to mount a third party campaign...

Still, even if the group, which constitutes a large online population, were to somehow get Palin to countenance a reconsideration, there is still the matter of widespread opposition to her candidacy that was displayed prior to her announcement that she wouldn't run. Many Republicans simply did not want her to run. A Fox News poll released a month before her announcement found that 66 percent of Republicans did not want her to enter the 2012 race.

The ads, which call for President Obama's removal and end with "Run Sarah Run!," begin running on Nov. 30 in Sioux City, Iowa. They will air for a week.
