Gov. Jerry Brown?s office announced this afternoon that the 74-year-old governor is receiving treatment for prostate cancer.
?Fortunately, this is early stage localized prostate cancer, which is being treated with a short course of conventional radiotherapy,? Dr. Eric Small, Brown?s oncologist at UC San Francisco, said in a statement released by the governor?s office.
?The prognosis is excellent, and there are not expected to be any significant side effects,? Small said.
Brown?s office said the governor will maintain a full work schedule during the treatment, which is scheduled to end the week of Jan. 7. That?s when the Legislature returns from winter recess, kicking off a week when governors typically give a state of the state speech and release a proposed budget for the coming fiscal year.
Prostate cancer is second to skin cancer as the most common cancer among men in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Almost 215,000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008, the most recent data available, and there were 28,471 deaths that year.
Brown had a cancerous growth removed from his nose in 2011.
