CHHS visits Northwood, Orange resumes events

Chapel Hill High School?s wrestlers continue a busy schedule this weekend when they travel down 15-501 South for the Northwood Duals in Pittsboro.This weekend?s bouts are likely to give Arthur Colson (26-4) a rematch with Northwood?s Thaddeus Tallman (23-5). Tallman gave Colson just his fourth loss of the season when they met in the championship round of the Rocket Invitational last Saturday in Roxboro.Colson pinned Chris Bunn of South Granville in 1 minute and John Bennett Oxford Webb in 5:00 before being felled by Tallman at the 3:55 mark of their match in the finals.Two Tigers came away from Roxboro last weekend with titles. Chapel Hill?s Joe Carter (145 pounds) and Robert Price (220) both won their weight classes in the Rocket Invitational.Price, 16-11 this season, had one of his best days ever, winning three straight matches with pins. He felled Cameron Blanchard of Carolina-6 Conference rival Oxford Webb in 1:455, Ezra Walker of Halifax in 1:55 and then Bartlett Yancey?s William Pressley with scant seconds remaining in their bout, pinning him at the 5:57 mark.Carter evened up his record at 11-11 after winning four decisions to win the 160 class ? downing Aaron Rettig (Webb) 14-2, Josh Babich (N.C. Science & Math) 6-1, Malique Jones (Franklinton) 2-1 and Gannon Griffin (Halifax) 6-1.Two other Tigers reached the championship round of their weight classes. Zachary Allen (106 pounds) and Tommy Morrison (25-11 at 126 pounds) both earned second places in the invitational.Elsewhere, Carrboro?s impoving team went 3-2 in the Bull City Throwdown at Durham Jordan to improve to 7-4 on the season.Unhappy Panthers win big in their Winter DualsEven though the Panthers dominated their own Orange Winter Duals last Saturday, they?ve not enjoyed a good start in 2013.Still mourning the deaths of two student in a fatal crash over the holiday break, Orange High School cancelled its dual wrestling match last Thursday with 4A Jordan.And while Orange went 4-0 as a team in the Winter Duals, it lost top wrestler Jack Twomey-Kozak for an indefinite amount of time after he was injured in Saturday final bouts with tough Wake Forest-Rolesvlle.After being pinned by Nushid Borrow in their 138-pound match, Twomey-Kozak was taken to a hospital for examination. He left the gym conscious and alert, and he seemed ?fine? after examinations, team officials said, but his status for this Saturday?s Pruitt Rainey Invitational in Knightdale is questionable.Seven different Panthers went undefeated in multiple matches in the Winter Duals, helping Orange top Davie County 35-26, Durham School of the Arts 49-18, Northeast Guilford 58-12 and Wake Forest Rolesville 42-30.Joe Scott went 4-0 at 106 pounds in the duals, including two pins. Anderson Pope (145 pounds) and David Peters-Logue (160) both finished 3-0 ? all their wins by pins. Gonzolo Garcia (113) and Aubrey Browning (182) also went 3-0. Drew Lemaster (170) and Dylan Wilson (285) went 2-0.Elsewhere, Carrboro went 3-2 in the Bull City Throwdown at Durham Jordan to impeove to 7-4 on the season.Orange splits with Cedar Ridge in basketballKacia Vines and Holli Butler each scored 11 points Saturday to lead Cedar Ridge in a 56-23 rout of Hillsborough rival Orange. Cedar Ridge (7-6) took a 20-3 lead after one quarter and never looked back as Orange fell to 2-9.Playing for the first time since the death of Orange High students Chase Underhill and Kacie Chamberlain, the teams observed a moment of silence before the girls basketball game.Orange won the boys game, 40-34, led by just seven points from Eryk Dean and six by Matt Gattis.Orange (5-7) faces a tough test Thursday when it hosts Chapel Hill (10-3) in a Carolina-6 Conference game. The Orange girls play Thursday at Chapel Hill (12-1).
