AUTOS: EXCLUSIVE ? Hendrick Buys C7 Corvette

Rick Hendrick bought the first production 2014 Corvette C7 for $1.05 million?

UPDATE: Rick Hendrick did, in fact, purchase the first 2014 Chevrolet Corvette for $1.05 million plus 10 percent buyer?s premium at Barrett-Jackson Saturday night, where he also bought a 1969 L-88 Corvette for $1 million.

The Saturday morning buzz at the 42nd Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event centered around the arrival of a very special car and the man likely to buy it.

At 10 a.m. local time, a 2014 Chevrolet C7 Corvette show car rolled off the back of a trailer at Barrett-Jackson, and NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick ? who also happens to be the largest Chevy dealer in America ? was there to see it. And he talked about it in an exclusive interview with SPEED.com.

Tonight, Barrett-Jackson will auction off VIN #001 of the 2014 Corvette, with the winning bidder able to choose the color and options on the first car, as well as pick it up when it rolls off the assembly line at Bowling Green, Ky. Hendrick certainly is the favorite to be the winning bidder.

Hendrick liked what he saw with the new C7.

?It?s an opportunity to see some really advanced engineering,? Hendrick told SPEED.com ?Unbelievable design and unbelievable car. Anytime we see a fresh, new-generation born, it?s exciting. But I?d say this one is probably more exciting than any one I?ve been a part of. Everybody?s been thinking about what the C7 would look like, and I was blown away when I saw it. There?s a lot of excitement.?

Hendrick said he wants to buy the first 2014 Corvette tonight.

Hendrick said when asked by SPEED.com if he intended to buy VIN #001. ?It depends on how crazy it gets. There are people who sometimes ? I guess I?m as crazy as some of the others ? there?s a certain amount, a limit I can go to.?

Still, he plans to go for it.

?Because I?m a Chevy dealer, and because new and used we sell more than anybody else in the country, it would be a nice piece for the museum (the Hendrick Heritage Collection), it would a nice piece to take around to the stores, and to have the first one of this generation would be great.?
