Morley and Krieger continue to piece together the cause for the unprovoked murders occurring in the town. As they dig deeper into their investigation, they simultaneously unravel the mysteries surrounding the town and it?s occupants ? a secret deeply shrouded in grotesque truths that few want to face.

In issue three, Morley?s life before Green Wake is revealed ? an important insight that exposes some of the mysticism behind the town. Ariel, the most likely suspect behind the killings is on a clear path to reach Babylon; a sanctuary and/or relief from the current oppression everyone suffers with in silence.

Morley and Krieger are gaining on Ariel?s tracks, but not before dark elements of the town begin interfering with their investigation that only adds to the complexity of it all. New characters are also revealed which provide a well paced exploration of the town in a wider context.

I shake my head. I shake my head in utter disbelief. I cannot understand how Green Wake can get any more intriguing, and yet it does. Kurtis Wiebe?s carefully crafted story truly grabs you and won?t let go with this third issue ? answering some of the big questions that have been raised since issue one. Anyone who is disappointed that the answers aren?t being spoon fed to the reader need to realize the substantiality of this book. It is perhaps one of the most deserving examples of a graphic novel; an appropriate title and not just a fancy way of saying ?comic book.? The story is arguably as comprehensive and complex as any novel, yet we are treated to the beautiful art by superstar Riley Rossmo. It?s absolutely the best of both worlds if you ask me.

What I love most of all is that this book exemplifies comic book magic when the creative team produces work built on mutual respect and true heart. It?s very clear that the overall vision for this book had been discussed and determined well before a pencil ever hit the page. It?s this succinct creative process between Wiebe and Rossmo, that act as the glue which keeps this very intricate story intact throughout each issue.

Kurtis? script continues to display a high level of confidence and well executed character development, at the same time not spelling everything out for us. It can definitely be tricky to create moody characters that aren?t depressed/mopey and completely unrelatable. It?s a fine line that Wiebe walks with remarkable ease.

Rossmo?s art is certainly evolving particularly with his color palette. He?s clearly using specific color schemes to represent and evoke specific emotions that is really working. He?s tightened his line work which I really like, and his overall style continues to enhance the reading experience. My only quirk is with the lettering. I think the balloons could use some borders to help make them pop. Just nit-picking here.

Perhaps the icing on the cake (for me) is that this story helps fill the void that Twin Peaks left me with when it went off the air almost two decades ago. Not to say this is ?Twin Peaks: The Comic Book,? not at all! But the fantastical elements, dark humor, and continuing mystery, satisfies something only Twin Peaks used to deliver. Green Wake has become the type of story that I find myself re-reading each issue twice, something I can?t explain nor do I care to. I just really love this book.

I highly recommend anyone who hasn?t started reading this series to catch up! This murder mystery progresses like the slow burn of a menthol cigarette casually clenched between the sexy lips of a beautiful woman. A great cup of deep black coffee truly compliments the reading experience. Trust me.
